Letter to the Editor: Having fun in South Carolina

The Herald (Rock Hill, S.C.)
December 30, 2009 Wednesday

Dear Editor,

My name is Sam Miller. I recently moved to Rock Hill in September. I worked for a local radio station and loved every minute of it. I wrote stories for our sports guy and had my own sports show on Saturday mornings. I went to school at Shelbyville High School and took classes for writing but never applied for any scholarships, which I could have gotten to go to journalism school. I miss my job and writing stories for our sports manager for the radio station. Moving to South Carolina was a tough decision, but it's one I'm proud of.

I know that these letters to the editor are for opinions, so I'm going to get to that. Since my number one interest is in sports, I want to voice my opinion on how being a fan of a team from one state changes when you move to another state.

You've got to love your home team right? Well, I am here to tell you, if you plan on being a home-team hugger, do not move from Indiana, being an Indianapolis Colts fan, to South Carolina, being a Carolina Panthers fan.

Now, I'm not one to “hate on” any football team, or say something bad about any team, but if you really think about it, that's a tough move. You have got the Indianapolis Colts, with the best quarterback to play the game since Johnny Unitas, and then you have the Carolina Panthers, with quarterback Jake Delhomme, who is not only falling to the bottom of the quarterback stats sheet but is also climbing to the top of the worst quarterbacks in Panthers history.

I am one of those guys who have to root for the home team, so I say, “Go, Panthers,” but I have to say, “Go, Colts” at the same time.

I could rant on and on about this forever, but I think I got my point across. If you are a home-town fan, and always will be, no matter where you move, don't move from Indiana to Carolina. That's almost like saying you are a fan of the Yankees and move to Boston. It just can't happen.

Also, I think these letters to the editor should have some fun and some entertainment in them, so I submit this letter.

  1. I'm up the road in Charlotte and have to say that as a Yankee, Jet, Knick fan I have found little of what you're speaking of. As a matter of fact there are so many transplants here that everyone understands that you have a home town team you've cheered for all your life and respect that. Sure I have adopted the Panthers, Hurricanes and Bobcats as my new home town teams but nothing can replace my first loves.

  2. It's nice to see that literacy is no longer a prerequisite for submitting letters to newspapers.
