Open Letter to Brian Cashman: We are having a Bubba Crosby moment

Dear Madam or Sir,

Left field. See it under the snow? Yogi finished there. Roy White. Jim Leyritz scrubbed a fly out there, costing Andy Hawkins a victory in his no-hitter. Left field. It's out there, behind the fog. It hasn't gone away.

Right now, our leftfielder is Brett Gardner, our best centerfielder, or Jamie Hoffmann, who three weeks ago ranked 41 on the Dodgers' roster.

How about Bubba Crosby? He's only been out of baseball two years. Nobody's sure why he quit. He might be in shape. Maybe that collision with Sheffield knocked sense into him. Good grief, if he was still in baseball, he might have ranked 41 on the Dodgers roster. We'll never know.

Why mention Bezelbubba? Well, the last time you claimed to be content with an unsettled outfield was a time disturbingly close to the one we're now enduring. And it was Bubba out there, getting your Cashmanian vote of confidence. That year, we ended up doing a very smart thing. We signed Johnny Damon.

Sir, those who cannot remember history... are Mets fans.

Sign Johnny Damon.

Do it now. That way, you won't be on the hook in June, when the trade deadline causes half the teams in baseball to throw over excess baggage. Salary dumps. That's all we'll see. Raul Mondesis and Bobby Abreus. They'll cost arms and legs. More arms, by the way, then legs.

Want to be strong for the 2011 free agent class? Don't be in third at the trade deadline.

This duel has gone on long enough. Sign Johnny. It's Bubba time.

  1. After seeing Granderson butcher centerfield in September, I hope that if they don't sign Damon they play Gardner in center and the Grand one in left.
