The Mysteries of Pittsburgh: A team of Yankee back-stories

If we're looking for a second team -- and you can forgive the city for Bill Mazeroski -- the Pirates could be our best bet.

They are us.

Check out all these Yankee back-stories...

Brendon Donnelly -- Old Goggle-face kicked our asses with the Angels during the post-seasons of the early 2000s. But when Boston signed him, hah! he wasted their money.

Octavio Dotel -- He was going to be Cashman's big steal of 2006. Yeah, right. Ten innings.

Javier Lopez -- Theo wouldn't trade him in 2006, was convinced he'd be a stopper someday. Last year, Redsock fans begged to deal him. His ERA was over 9.00.

Daniel McCutchen -- Part of the deal for Nady and Marte. If he turns out to be good, that trade could go down as one of the worst for us in recent times.

Ross Ohlendorf -- Sports Illustrated recently published a feature on this guy, describing him as a future ace. We gave him away for Nady and Marte.

Lastings Milledge -- Remember when he was going to take NY back for the Mets?

Jose Tabata -- Aging in dog's years as we speak. He might be 20. He might be 24. His babynapping wife is practically in the AARP. Right now, he's the one piece of the Nady deal that doesn't sting, (Jeff Karstins notwithstanding.) Remember the hype this "kid" generated? He was on every bloggers Top 10 prospect list. At some molecular level, the Yankees must have suspected something. Were they pulling our chains all along, looking to dump him? Are they doing it now with Jesus Montero?

  1. They are absolutely pulling our chains on Jesus.

He is a make belief, imaginary ballplayer.

He fucks around just like everyone else.

There is no record, anywhere in history, of anyone ( let alone legions of folks) following him around, listening to his every word.

If he gets run over by a truck, I guarantee he does not come out of a cave ready to "play two" three days later.

I would trade him right now for a 3rd round pick.

  2. Do I sense a Michael Chabon fan in the room?
