Tomorrow, Yankee fans worldwide will gather around their television portals to watch groups of young, plucky, talented unknowns pour out their hearts on the national stage in the slender dream of being someday offered a contract as American Yankee Idol.
The competition, which began last spring, culminates in a one-game playoff, in which rising stars from two local teams have a shot at impressing the Yankiverse enough to warrant being signed, ensuring their escape from Bible-camp Texas or the ill-conceived, domed sweat-lodge of Tampa.
Immediately following the game, fans will text-message their choices to the Yankees, who in December will bestow upon one lucky star the "JAVIER VAZQUEZ MEMORIAL SALARY CUSHION," named after the former Bomber who was acquired for the brevity of his contract.
