John's Takeaway points from last night's hideous defeat

1. You can't cry over spilled milk, but it's hard to understand why Brett Gardner didn't run on that play at third, but he didn't. It could have changed everything, but he didn't run. It was a big play, but he didn't make it. Well, you can't go thinking about what didn't happen, but that sure didn't happen. He didn't run. Fastest player on the team, and he stayed right there. If it had been Posada, you could figure it. But it was Gardner, and he didn't run. Isn't that amazing?

2. By scoring those runs in the ninth, the Redsocks allowed themselves a chance to rest their bullpen. So they'll have everybody ready tonight. You know, those add on runs can have an enormous impact on a team and a season. They took the Yankees right out of that game.

3. You can look at this in a lot of ways, but if the Yankees win tonight, they'll still be tied with Boston for first place in the AL East. It almost seems impossible, but that's the way it is. Still, a team cannot continually lose to another team and expect to win the season. You just can't.
4. Seven out of eight times. Isn't that unbelievable? The odd thing is, if the Yankees win tomorrow, they'll jump back into first.

  2. They took the crowd out of the game. Both nights, by scoring three in the first. Fifty thousand people, Suzyn, and they took the crowd right out of the game.

  3. The Swisher HR call from Sunday will never be topped. To paraphrase, It's a long fly ball to right...but it's going to be a foul ball. It's foul...it's a home run!

    You just can't figure baseball.

    Or even see one.
