  1. Let's also mention the Ex-Yankee broadcast team:

    1. Joe Angel, Baltimore Orioles: first-rate, witty, engaging radio announcer--of course, Sterling couldn't work with him, so he went back to Baltimore after one season (1991) in the Bronx.
    2. Charley Steiner, Los Angeles Dodgers: Another top-notch radio voice, formerly of ESPN-TV and radio--yes, you guessed it: Sterling couldn't work with him either. He is now the radio-broadcast partner of Vin Scully, who seems to have no problems with him.
    3. Tommy Hutton: The TV color analyst for Miami Marlins. He teamed with Hank Greenwald on Yankee radiocasts in 1987-88, BS (Before Sterling).
    4. DeWayne Staats: TV play-by-play for the Tampa Bay Rays since 1998. He anchored the Yankees' MSG telecasts from 1990 through 1994. Apparently too tasteful and professional for the Steinbrenners.
    5. George Grande: Has been the Reds' TV play-by-play man for the Reds for the past 17 years; spent 1989-90 in that capacity for the Yankees--again, with excessive smoothness and professionalism, so he shown the door.
    6. Tim McCarver: Legendary analyst for big-time network baseball telecasts for the past quarter century; he was featured on the Yankees' Fox 5 telecasts from 1999-2001. Evidently deemed insufficiently supine toward The Boss.

The common thread here: any and all of the foregoing are vastly superior to the Three Stooges--Sterling, Waldman, and Kay--who now torture Yankee fans with their unique blend of ineptitude, affectation, buffoonery, and ass-kissing of the Steinbrenners--the latter being the key to their depressing longevity with the team.

  2. I forgot Jim Kaat: another superb network analyst (now with the MLB network), notable during his Yankee years for his refusal to kiss George's ass on the air. Yankee tenure: 1986 (WPIX), 1995-2001 (MSG), 2002-2006 (YES).

I may be overlooking some others--additions and corrections welcome.

  3. Don't forget, Swisher can pitch if we need him.

  4. Here in VA visiting and "watched" Andy pitch on Gameday. what a way to end a career. My bromance has only deepened. Way to go, Andy!

  5. Wow. Someone doesn't feel they get enough of Tim McCarver. Now I've seen everything. Just kill me.

  6. No one--least of all me--said that he doesn't get enough of Tim McCarver. But if you think that he's not vastly superior to the clueless, witless bombast of Sterling, Kay, and Waldman, then you deserve to have your wish granted.

My point is that every announcer on that list is better than those three; they're gone and the Three Stooges remain because of the latter's assiduous ass-kissing of their bosses--another example of the Mafioso-style ethos of the Yankee mismanagement/ownership team.

  8. Wow--it looks as though some snide jerk really thinks Sterling and Kay are better game broadcasters than Tim McCarver. McCarver has his drawbacks--but he is in a different class than the three stooges. Sterling, Kay, and Waldman are, collectively, a sick joke inflicted on Yankee fans. If Swinging Kei means to assert that he prefers the ignorance, bombast, and incompetence to whatever McCarver has been doing, let him/her/it state this outright so we can gauge the true extent of his brain damage and offer him suggestions for medical remediation. Next perhaps Swinging Kei will be explaining why Ben
Affleck the director is in the same class as Fritz Lang just because the latter made some crappy movies while he was in Hollywood.

It looks like a deaf chimpanzee--a masochistic one--is posting as Swinging Kei.
