MLB to Cardinals: Skate, little bird, skate!

Can you imagine the outrage that would have been directed at the Yankees if it turned out that Brian Cashman had been hacking emails of the Toronto Blue Jays for nearly three years?

That's what the Cardinals did with Houston, and today, they're being fined a measly $2 million - (clam dip money) - plus two low-level draft picks. They won't even lose a first-rounder, because they had already forfeited it to sign free agent Dexter Fowler. (Which, come to think of it, made signing him much easier; they figured to lose the pick anyway.) Sweet.

Close your eyes and imagine the reaction if it were the Yankees.

Pitchforks and torches.

  1. You may have (as I once did) an account with a stockbroker. I did this back when I was very young, certainly even more stupid than I am today. I was focused on socking away ANY money I could (small amounts, really). And investing it, to see it grow.

I didn't make much. But I lived in a one-room apartment in Manhattan (it was 8 feet, 8 inches wide at its widest point!) . . . and that wasn't all that expensive in the 1970s.

At some point, were you like me -- you may have looked at your statement and realized: "This broker is using my account as a source of funds" (for himself). It was (and perhaps still is) called "Churning."

If you are now feeling sorry for me, first off -- I was lucky enough to have the chance to work hard enough to save some money. Kids today don't seem to have the chance. Second, at least I wised up at some point. Third -- I have friends with a lot more money (now) to whom this has happened, unfortunately, in the past 15-20 years. Big dollars were made to disappear out of their accounts.

What you did then, even were you as stupid as I was (and maybe still am), is -- find an alternative. Back when I did this, in the early 1980s, something called "Discount Brokerage" firms had emerged. Thank Heaven! I might have dived into 17 stupid investments in a row, but at least my account was not the "community chest" for a stockbroker!

Applying this story to what concerns us here:

The Yankees have been treated, for decades now, as a Source of Funds for major league baseball.

    AND: Still are.

If you want to figure out why Joe Buck (and many others) feel free to treat the Yankees with disdain, look at it this way: How much respect would you accord to someone (a person, place, or thing) whose wallet you were able to access -- full-time -- any time you liked, for any purpose you wished.......?

[of course, the way the Yankees have thrown money around to numerous people who cannot play the game of baseball -- wasting it -- also invites contempt. And probably encourages MLB to work hard to figure out how to get more $$$ out of that big wallet]

Now ....... if this sounds somewhat like politics in the USA, well ....... you've got a good ear!

  2. Glad to hear we're on the same page El Duque. Same thoughts that I had as I read about the penalties handed down to the Cardinals. The Red Sux also got away easy with their cheating in Latin America. Maybe in the Yankees' case, they would have banned the owners?! No such luck!

  4. Oh yeah . . . those dildos at MLB hqtrs would have used this opportunity to shove it up the Yankees behinds (with a smirk on their collective fat faces). Certainly forfeit a first round pick, maybe a move of another years' pick to end of the first round, maybe loss of other privileges such as unable to sign any Latin American FAs, who knows.
