Congrats duque! Love your style, man. HOWEVER (there's always a however..), you neglected to plug this blog at the end of your piece. You missed out on an opportunity to attract additional urbane, snooty, redsockian commenters to torment your minions. We love those guys! Next time don't forget!!
Congrats, Duque. Please complain to NYT editors for excessive use of commas in the sentence with Homer and Sappho and Homer and Jethro. You need to save some of those commas for the later innings. Looking forward to your next book on the poetry of Bob Dylan.
Congrats Duque. I read the article earlier and couldn't find a mention. I couldn't understand what you and everyone were talking about. Then I realized you wrote it. Once again, nice job.
Heartiest congrats, Duque! Struck just the right tone - - a little bit of flip, a touch of snark (both fitting for the subject), some pop culture (my God, a Homer & Jethro reference even:
Ah-we don't smoke and we con't chew We are the boys from the Boy Scout Troop - - Wooooo!
plus just the right of derence & reverence due a Laureate...great job!
More twilight of the gods time, though, and it certainly diminished my joy at escaping the one-game Selig WC last night - - more than a bit: Thomas Earl Petty, FGS!! Five years younger than I am. That man, along with his sidekicks Mike Campbell & Benny Tench, fronted what I considered the best damn cover band after the Mop-Tops from Liverpool. For more than forty years Tom and his gang just kept churning out hit after hit, most from Tom's and/or Mike's pen. I loved the man and his music, and, of course, there is a tie-in with the above-mentioned Laureate - - another of my top faves - - since Petty & the Heartbreakers were Dylan's band for the 1985 True Confessions Tour - - still some of the best music to come from the genre of good ol' rock & roll (imho). The Night Has Come Fallin' From the Sky, for me. I will miss the man greatly. To console myself, I have every bit of his music ever put to vinyl of which I am aware (include the live stuff), and all the CDs, as well. RIP, Tom! and Long Live the Laureate - - and the Laureate of our humble Site, as well! LB (No J)
Maybe it is time to start a petition, a website a movement to have famous Yankees nominated for an elitist award. Obviously I do not know all the possibilities in the US (loads of prizes I probably never heard of), but in the spirit of laureate Dylan, why not: ~ a Grammy for the various melodious homerun calls by the Master - an Emmy for various performances by Joe Girardi before getting thrown - a diversity award for any Yankee player not being caucasian - a ballet award for Jeter (life time achievement?) - et cetera
And of course: best website 2017 by Time: IIHIIFIIc
Even though Scottish, Irvine Welsh is a legitimate author and novelist and playwrite. Not only did he write "Trainspotting", the book, not the movie script mind you, he also did screenplays. Nobel material (like in the days before Dylan?), probably not. But more worthy than Tambourine Man.

ReplyDeleteNice score, El Duque. I especially enjoyed reading about Homer & Jethro and learning they were "known as the 'Thinking Man's Hillbillies'."
I am now ready for tomorrow night's game.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations my friend, a great read!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell done, funny, informative, I'm going to have to buy one of this Dylan guy's albums and see what the fuss is about.

Sorry about the sloppy typos above - - I have had a long, rough day, moving much furniture, and many, many art-books. LB (No J)
ReplyDeleteIt was ok. ;)

Nice work, Seely!
ReplyDeleteThat was damn good.
ReplyDeleteOne question: how can anybody who wrote "Trainspotting" comment derisively about anything to do with literature?

You are our leader for a reason. Congratulations, from the Gray Lady to the Gray Man.
