Yankees to Tyler Wade: Drop Dead

They did it.

Why did we think they wouldn't?

Youth? Back to Scranton.

  1. I guess Cashman's analytics said we didn't have enough power in the infield. So we got Drury and Walker. smh.

  3. Yay. Mets cast-offs!

So, he gave in to the pressure from all the press box idiots. The same guys who, when these mediocrities—Dreary, Lind, Bad-Back, etc.—are exposed for what they are, will be castigating him nonstop for trading off the youth.

And that is what will happen next, particularly if these guys have a hot month or two. Coops will deal them all—Andujar, Wade, even Torres—for the same bundles of great pitchers he got for Mike Lowell.

URG is right. Also Ugh, Rrrrr, and Ooof.

Signing Walker seems like a good move. He has a lifetime .272 average and is a solid fielder. Walker is a professional who, while not a star , would contribute.

It seems clear Torres will need time to find his swing after misssing most of last year. He is going to start the year in the minors for more than one reason. Tyler Wade , while having a good spring is unproven. He may be the answer, he may not be. From my perspective let Wade and Walker fight it out and let the best man play. When Torres gets it together , if he is the best option, move him into the job.

If Walker doesn’t win the position, he will either provided good depth or is tradable. Someone will need a solid second baseman. His salary at the estimated $5m figure won’t preclude trading him for some decent prospect.

  6. I think this stupidity originates with Randy Levine and Hal Steinbrenner and is relayed passively by the equally stupid Cashman.

  7. I suppose you're right, o Yankees Specter. And if it was to be as you describe, it might be worthwhile.

But I just don't think Coops' brain works that way.

If Wade needs to fight it out with anybody, let him fight it out with the next promising Yankees infielders in line, maybe Kyle Holder, who looks great all of a sudden, or Thairo "Faster than a Speeding Bullet" Estrada?

And why bring Walker in anyway, AFTER Wade has shown he can do the job (unless, of course, the Yankees have been lying to us, and Tyler's wrist is a mess—hardly beyond the realm of possibility, when you think about it)?

I fear we will get a reversion to the Yankees' usual mode of operating, which is play the veterans and the guys you're paying the most, and trade the kids.

Moves like this are all about Coops covering his ass with those mighty intellects who cover sports for the local fish sheets. When they next stick their heads up from a whiskey bottle, they will be sure to applaud him for his prudence in bringing in the vets.

And so another mile to Cooperstown is paved.

  8. Cashman's idiot math: if you keep piling up enough aging mediocrities, you transcend mediocrity. Cashman himself is a mediocrity, so this modality of stupidity comes naturally to him.

  9. What's confusing me is, if we only had around $12MM remaining under the cap before this trade, aren't we now at around $7MM?

Paying $12MM and giving up, say, Drury in a trade might have gotten us a reasonable arm at the trade deadline. $7MM won't even buy us a big bag of Cheetos.

  10. I am confused as to why he didn't deal instead for a European soccer player. Hey Horace, what gives?

  11. They cost big money, Joe of Brooklyn Past.

Coops is like the guy who can't resist going to every yard sale he sees and picking up "a bargain," even if the bargain in question is something broken that has no discernible purpose.

Or maybe Coops should have been a World War I general. He has enough guys now that he could throw them all into a first wave, before having his best troops come up after them.

If we played doubleheaders every day, Brian Cashman would be a great GM.
