Rusty Tipple Redux

A good friend who is an amazing researcher managed to turn up Rusty Tipple's draft registration card from World War II.

He wasn't eligible for the draft, of course, being 51 at the time we entered the war.  But we learn from this that he did have a wife named Pearl.

From his printing it seems unlikely that he did all that much writing and apparently the Great Depression was hard on him, but Rusty was hanging in there. He lists his employer as the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration), and relates that he is learning to be a machinist in a local training program—a skill that probably paid off all right during the war.

  2. They were registering *anyone* under 65!

This looks like a registration card for ages 45 to 65. Different times.

  4. Rain delay ... may work in our favor. Agreed CC did not have it tonight.

  5. As I just stood on West Street and Houston, I saw lightning up north, over the Bronx, and said to myself "Have we made the Juju gods angry?"

  8. Actually, I think the rain was the JuJu gods trying to bail us out. Which they almost did.

Today was an unfortunate reversion to form, with Stanton back to Scranton, and Dellin back to Toonces.

    Still...it was close!

  9. One thing I don't understand: how it is that we have eight relief pitchers, but we're still throwing guys for two innings all the time?

  10. Kay made a reference to the two innings thing last night. Boonie is trying to stretch the relievers so they can pitch two innings. I get all of that, but Toonces...not so sure about him. Also, I think we're all in agreement that Chapman wasn't going to pitch last night so that was another reason.

  11. I think Betances did just fine. One bad pitch, which just barely made it out. Lousy timing, sure, but not a bad two innings.

Even Holder is starting to look good with his new slider/slurve/change or whatever it is. The Sox couldn't even get close to hitting it.

CC is a tough competitor and has had an amazing run this year, but four or five runs is what I expect from him most games. It's not easy to win those games when you're up against a decent or better team.

I just hope Sonny Gray doesn't revert tonight against Oakland. That would suck.

  12. To be fair, yes, Betances did do pretty well. That was an amazing piece of hitting by Martinez.

But almost no relief pitcher—not even The Great One—is as good in a second inning.

I'm hoping things will be better once we have Warren and Kahnle back. And while I'm not a huge Montgomery
fan, his return will also help us eat innings, whether he gets his starting spot back or works as a long reliever.
