We’re an okay team. If we keep rebuilding, we’ll be great one day. If we try to reload and go for broke this year, we’ll all be shivering around 55 gallon drums all winter.
Reportedly, Chou En-Lai was once asked what the impact of the French Revolution had been. His answer: "Too soon to tell."
Same thing on Judge. He's played 273 games of MLB so far. Mickey Mantle hit only 57 HRs in his first 365 games (you can look this up). Struck out 255 times in thos games.
And -- yeah -- it's also much too soon to stop rebuilding.
PROBLEM: Any team that keeps sending Neil Walker out there does not think it's rebuilding.
But as for Mantle, by 1952—his first full year in the majors, at the age of 20—he was already the best player in the AL, and maybe the majors. He led the league with a .924 OPS, despite playing after an operation for a torn ACL that was never really repaired. He finished third in the MVP voting that season.
His terrible leg injuries slowed him down (a little) for the next couple years, but by 1955, at 23, he was the best player in baseball again, a title he would hold for most of the next ten years.
Now, is it fair to compare anyone to Mickey Mantle? Absolutely not!
And Judge is a fine player and seems like a terrific person. But I don't think he will ever be the main pillar of this team.

What possible reason could Boone have had for sending Domingo back out there to start the 5th!?
ReplyDeleteGerman is trash. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills that this isn't a unanimous consensus
ReplyDeleteGerman is not trash. He's just a rookie, with a rookie's limitations.
ReplyDeleteTonight was another tribute to out "superstar" whose night ran as follows:
—Ground out.
—Strike out.
—Fly out, with a man on second.
—Hit by pitch, then thrown out stealing to end the inning.
Hooray, another great night! He carried the Yankees, just as he did, um, yeah, I can distinctly remember it now...

ReplyDeleteYou got it, 13bit. "Stop competing, keep rebuilding."
ReplyDeleteI keep saying that. But I don't think anyone on the team believes that.
And they think Judge is a superstar. Which he is not.

Very true, Joe FOB.
