  1. August 2-6, 2018, a weekend that will live in ignominy.

  2. Hey, it’s only early August...

  3. One question remaining: Can they use the remaining time (lots of it) to blow an appearance in the wild card mess?

    Time will tell, of course.

Another question: How could all of us have fooled ourselves (me included) into thinking the team was going for the divisional championship, when everything management did was about (a) staying within the salary cap, which was made difficult with the addition of GStanton; (b) accumulating "international money," and (c) acquiring non-entities?

The only real success this season seems to be having found other things for Ellsbury to do. Of course, he's still getting a mammoth paycheck!

Take another look at what was done in July by Cashmoney, it's NOT about winning now. Not even close.

So: This year may turn out to be about 2019. Or 2020. In hindsight, that might be wonderful.

Right now, it does feel a lo† like someone has me lying face-down, prone, at the termination of a fast-moving conveyor belt -- with a big heap of pineapples on the way . . . in.

  4. Hey, on the bright side, Eovaldi looked good!

  5. Yankees pitcher Eovaldi gets hurt, has surgery. Yanks assess his chances, send him packing. Eovaldi heals, regains form and develops unhittable cutter. Yanks' golden millennial in the basement advises against reacquiring. Redsocks, not being dullards, sign Eovaldi just in time to administer an extra-spikey pineapple to our collective rectum.

I suppose Happ, the rental, was cheaper than Eovaldi? Amiright?

The best thing going forward for this club might just be to fall out of the wild card chase.

  6. I think JFB has a really good take on this season. That makes a lot of sense, to me, anyway.

  7. I agree with you JFB. can you hear me? I'm the guy lying four spaces back on the conveyer belt, getting ready for...uh...re-entry...

  8. I respectfully disagree, though it sure looks like that.

As usual, Svengali Cashman was moving in all directions at once, playing three-dimensional chess, over four-dimensional checkers and eight-dimensional Parcheesi.

This Yankees team was going for the World Series, all right. But yes, it was also going to save money, rebuild the farm system, acquire key deadline veterans, AND pile up international money.

I'm sure, somewhere in there, was a hope to also win the World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the Stanley Cup.

That great big splat we heard in Boston this weekend was the all-too-predictable result of such scattered and wishful thinking.

  9. John Sterling is wrong. You CAN predict baseball.

When the first guy got on in the 10th last night I said, "Wild pitch. Base hit." I knew it was over.

I knew it was over earlier when it was clear that Chapman had nothing.

I knew it was over earlier when they failed to tack on runs.

I knew it was over earlier when they announced the game would be on ESPN.

Right now this is a very bad team, Aaron Boone is worthless and how Rothschild kept his job is beyond me. Bad team.

  10. On a happier note: Yesterday my son and I played nine innings of baseball under 1864 rules. We wore the old style hats and uniforms and played with no gloves. My hands hurt (I played first). Just different enough. For example if you catch the ball on one bounce it is an out.

I haven't played any kind of ball since playing soft ball in LA in the early 80's.

My favorite moment was driving Zak in from third with a clean base hit to right. We had never played together before. He's 19 and I'm 62.

I woke up this morning totally stiff and wishing that laudanum was legal but overall it was great!

  11. Doug, did you play with a modern hard ball? hard to believe that the first baseman had no hand protection. Crazy!

  12. It's softer ball. I'm going to move this post to to the newer thread because I meant to put it there originally.

  13. Do you think Gary Sanchez is fast or slow for a catcher in 1864?
