Sincerity

We all know that professional athletes....particularly baseball players.....are encouraged to repeat only generalities on the air, or to any interview circumstance.

" I just wanna help the team win.."

" My teammates are the reason we are successful...

" I was lucky to get a good swing on the ball..."

You know.  Nonsense that makes us wretch.  I would ...in my perfect world....ban all interviews with players or managers or owners.  Never waste air time.   Each moment, each word, reminds me of how stupid the TV and sports people think the fan base is.

They are the masters of the banal and predictable.  All their questions and all their responses are empty of content.

So today, it was refreshing to hear this sincere and highly personable commitment of the latest $330 million superstar:

" I will do everything in my power to bring a championship to D.C. "

I kid you not.

  1. In the interests of keeping it cheap and not giving Hal any more money than we need to, I am going to propose again that we all get together with the Pinstripe Pass. Here's the deal - it gets you into the Stadium and you get one drink free, either beer or soda. You can then walk around the whole joint, graze on food, sit at tables and watch on TV or stand in a great location and watch live. I think it would be fun to get a bunch of people from this blog together to do this. What would be better, a weekend day game or a night game? I was looking at some of the games in mid-July as a good compromise. Please give feedback and get the ball rolling:

  2. I would love to do this, but I am currently living in LA.

    Great thinking.

  3. I am currently living in Manhattan, and I'm not sure I want to spend any money at all to this crap organization. But, it's not out of the question.

I've done that "cheap entry and roam around" thing before, and the roaming around does tend to overshadow the game. But hey, by July, that's just what we may feel like doing.

    Sure, 13.

  4. I and a few other IIH readers I know would definitely sign up for such an outing. As a way to further bring down costs, we could meet beforehand in a Yankees outdoor parking lot and share a few beers purchased at a nearby bodega.

We have done this kind of car-less tailgating in the past. You simply:

    1) Find an outdoor lot (I know of a pretty good one).

    2) Walk in to the lot and find a vehicle where the occupants have left, i.e., they aren't tailgating.

    3) Stand to the rear of that vehicle and "tailgate".

    4) It also helps to buy a bag or two of ice at the bodega, ask them for an empty box from a case of beer that their going to recycle anyway, line the box with a plastic garbage bag that perhaps you remembered to bring, and -- presto -- you've got a disposable beer cooler. Having a few al fresco bodega beers cuts down on the number of $15 cups of Hal-BraĆ¼ that need to be purchased at the game.

Or maybe this is all obvious.

Anyway, 13bit, please bring this idea to the forefront of our discussion now and again. It'll happen.

  5. We will revisit this in late April, if not sooner.

  6. Must be great to have an owner like this...

‘After Middleton stated in November that the Phillies were expecting to spend “stupid” money in the offseason, it came as no surprise that they emerged with Harper on a record-setting contract. And Middleton referenced his famous November declaration on Saturday, asking, “Does this look like stupid money?”

The answer is no for the Phillies, who have already sold upward of 220,000 tickets since reeling in Harper, their former division rival who spent the first seven years of his career with the Nationals. However, Middleton stressed this signing isn’t about profit for the franchise. Rather, it’s about returning the Phillies to superpower status after seven years among the dregs of the league.’

“I’ve made enough money in my life,” Middleton told Boras during negotiations. “I don’t need to make more. My franchise value has risen dramatically over the last 25 years. I don’t need it to rise more. I’m here to win. I think your guy can help me win, and that’s all I want to talk about.’”
