And now for something completely different...

A little, belated Mickmas offering, to help us through this gloomy winter.

And all done, of course, with the usual, career-long miseries, such as the unrepaired, torn ACL.

"O brave world
That has such people in't."

  1. That's the guy we need. Not Stanton and Judge and Ice Cream Sandwich and Hicks and Parrot Guy.

Yeah, fat chance we'll even see his like again in a Yankees uniform.

  2. Those numbers are crazy. Unfortunately, Mike Trout is an Angel.

  3. Mickey's mold is broken. Trout is no Mantle.Trout has benefitted from diluted pitching. There are twice as many teams and therefore twice as many pitchers now and half of them wouldn't be pitching in MLB because they are marginal at best and simply not good enough to be on the rosters 50 years ago. I bet even scrubs like Hector Lopez would be considered above average players in today's version of MLB. Maybe even a star.

  4. Carl,

I agree with you about the diluted pitching but it's a different world.

For example, Mickey had virtually no scrutiny of his private life. If he played today the microscope might have done him in. He might have ended up like Josh Hamilton.

And while the pitching is undeniably diluted Mickey would have had to face great pitchers from around the world in addition to "American" pitchers.

Then there's all the guys who avg. 95+ and a new pitcher every inning. Mickey got to feast on "3rd time through the batting order"

None of this takes away from how great he was. It's just hard to compare eras.

  5. I agree, Carl.

The one comparison we can make: The Mick was able to get on a ballfield despite many injuries, some severe.

I'm not saying this was necessarily a good idea. Sometimes it probably was not. But a guy who can't go in the ALCS because of a strain—even after he hit a massive home run while playing with said strain—is simply not pushing himself.

And if I am totally misjudging him and he really was badly hurt—something that seems nearly impossible, considering that he is already working out again—then he should have removed himself from the roster.
