The ghost of Sonny Gray and the future of Joey Gallo hover over a looming Yankee trade apocalypse

Still churning the buttery weekend deals that brought Benintendi, Effross, Montas and Trivino and left untouched the Yankee larder - the top 5 prospects, according to the blogs, Gammonites and drunkards.

We kept our SSs - Volpe, Peraza and Sweeney. We kept our catchers - Wells, Breaux and Rortvedt. We kept our Martian - now 19 - currently 8 for 36 (.222) with a HR in High Single A Hudson Valley.

We kept them all - unless they become part of something today.

We traded young, live arms, which somehow the Yankees have convinced us - or maybe themselves - happen to grow on trees. Last week, we fantasized about the the "W's" - Waldichuk and Wesneski. Now, they're gone, but the dealing isn't done - in the words of Jordan Peele - Nope - not by a longshot.

This is the part of the movie where Hercule Poirot gathers the dinner guests and signals the killer. We should be hiding in our cellars, awaiting what's next, as the gunfire in the distance keeps closing in. (Three movie metaphors, mixed in a blender: Now THAT's blogging, eh?)

The latest blast? Apparently, the Redsocks plan to punt on 2022. They traded Christian Vazquez - to fucking Houston, of course - who has killed us in past autumns. (They received an intriguing haul - a 23-year-old 3B who is hitting .321 with 21 HRs at Triple A, and an OF - also 23 - with 15 HRs and .249 at Double A. But why a 3B? Would they move the future billionaire Devers?)  Who in the name of Mookie Betts could go next: Xander Bogaerts? JD Martinez? Nathan Eovaldi? If Boston cleans house - and GM Chaim Bloom was the horse auctioneer in Tampa - today's events could shake the ground beneath us.

(Then again, Boston later traded for Tommy Pham, 34, so - WTF, Bloom?)

Also, there are weird signs that Tampa intends to go all in on the wild card race - maybe even with Joey Gallo. Damn. For starters, Brian Cashman would never trade Gallo to a divisional rival, right? Thus, Tampa's interest should be good news, right? Considering how bad he's been, we should be happy that anybody wants him, right?

Or was it us? Was it New York? Was our crude IIHIIFIIc mockery a factor in bringing Gallo down? Were we mean to him? Did we hurt his feelings? Is it our fault?

What about Miggy? Why hasn't Miguel Andujar been mentioned in trades? Someday, some GM is going to look really smart for giving him a shot. What if Tampa suddenly starts sniffing around for ex-Yanks with scores to settle?

What is the plan for Estevan Florial, whom the Yankees hyped for years and who is now hitting .292 with 14 HRs and 30 RBIs at Scranton? Thus far, the strategy is to pretend he doesn't exist. Do we do this until he's 30?

Why keep all three SS prospects? Could it be that Anthony Volpe is NOT as sure a bet as advertised? Is Cashman keeping all three in the hope that ONE becomes the long term solution? Because IKF is not.

With Josh Donaldson floundering, are other moves in sight?

Everything comes to a head at 5 p.m. What a crazy day to give up drinking?

  1. I know everyone is concerned about all the pitchers we've traded away...well..we drafted a bunch of college pitchers so I wouldn't get all caught up in what we let go...

  2. Donaldson is sooooooo expendable. He's a drag, man. But you think Cashman will get rid of him? What, does he have a Gallo-Donaldson package available for a few cases of Dubble Bubble?

I don't think so. Old (and I mean OLD) Josh is a winner! and a bona fide third baseman! and what defense! (cough)

It doesn't matter that DJ should be our regular at third--a guy who plays great defense and also hits. CASHMAN IS NEVER WRONG. At least until he's beaten some poor guy like Gallo to the point of mental instability, and gives up. But Gallo, as of this morning, is still with us. Somewhere. So the odds of Duckinson moving are likely zero.

I do wish we could land Robertson for the bullpen. It's a Hollywood ending for his career, coming back to his post-Mo haunt during a personally magical season.

But gee, if we got Robertson, where would we put Trivino and his 6.75 ERA? I mean, we just got him, and he's yet another chance for Cashman to prove his genii-ness.

  3. Off topic for a minute...

Aaron Judge is the first Yankee batter ever to hit 12 HR in a 14-game span. What a season.

Four Yankees hit 11 HR in a 14-game span.
    Babe Ruth (1926)
    Mickey Mantle (1966)
    Alex Rodriguez (2007)
    Aaron Judge (2017)

    Goodbye Gallo my old friend

I'm really thankful its the end

    Because you're always striking out

And your twitching ends with a pout

And that hyper tension living in my veins

    You're still - a clown - of strikeouts

  7. Very true, AA.

RAB points out this guy is, incredibly, worse than Gallo:

  8. A Lot To Unpack

Maybe I have Astros on the brain, but they did what I was advocating the Yankees should try to do, which was, fill the holes in their lineup. By acquiring Vazquez from the Red Sox and Trey Mancini from the O’s, the Astros made their batting order pretty much bullet proof.

That the two guys they got play well against the Yankees makes it that much harder to take.

    As to our acquisitions…

Sure, Benintendi is a big upgrade over Gallo but who wouldn’t be? I think Barney was right, we may never hear the home run call. But right now his AYGHAB is 7.2 which is not bad at all.

Montas, if not hurt, he is the number two we needed even if it cost us Waldichuk, who BTW was on the verge of becoming my favorite pitcher. Don’t ask me why but it’s true. Also, Sears! All he does is get guys out. But you have to give to get.

The Cubs guy – He’s a rookie and succeeding so that one sounds like a win in exchange for minor leaguers.

Did these moves make it easier to beat Houston? Meh.

We’re still running Donaldson, Hicks, and Higgy out there. How can you win close games when a third of your lineup is pretty much worthless. Then again, it used to be four. Don’t worry. Gallo doesn’t make it to game time.

Joel Sherman says the Yankees aren’t done trading. I hope he’s right. There still be holes to fill.

    Last,

    AA - Good one.

  11. I don't hate Gallo. What the fans are doing to him is despicable. He's trying very hard, maybe too hard, and failing, and that's got to be bad enough.

That said, I do want to see him leave. Mostly for our sakes, but also for his.

    ReplyDelete

  12. And in the naked light I saw

    ten thousand strikeouts maybe more

    ReplyDelete

  13. Not a fan of Combover Cashman, but…

Forget the guys we gave up…they’re prospects. When they’re our prospects they stink, like Florial, and only after they’ve been traded do they become bona fide perennial MLB all stars. That’s the way we as fans roll. So forget them.

They got E-Floss - he’s good! If Boonehead actually uses him against a string of right handed hitters instead of bringing in Peralta we might have something there. He also has a ton of team control left so he’s not just a rental. It’s a good trade.

They got Montas - he’s good! Maybe not Verlander good but good. Five minutes after the trade they moved Severino from the 15 day to the 60 day. They stashed him there, he’ll do his workouts, throw a few rehabs in Hudson Valley, and be back fresh as a daisy next month. Limits his innings and keeps the roster spot open, and come playoff time they’ll have Cole, Cortes, Montas, Montgomery, Severino, Taillion, and the German. Some will be starters, others will come out of the bullpen, just like Houston does. If Severino looks good they can extend him and next year’s rotation is set.

Besides this they kept the shortstops. That’s good because we’ll probably need one of those. Also keeps the best chips for a Soto trade, which isn’t happening, I know that, but if it does it’ll take a lot of the stink off the Gallo and Donaldson trades (not the Hicks contract though; that smell will never go away).

See what happens today but so far Cashstrapped has done pretty well. Shored up the pitching, kept Severino in the mix for the post season, and Soto is still in play with the Yankees’ best trade chips available. Pains me to say it but I’m semi-optimistic.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nice analysis, Mildred. What bothers me, as always, is that "semi" in "semi-optimistic." I know that feeling very well.

    ReplyDelete
  15. So unfortunately true-believers, my Castro ploy did not work.

The news is rumbling that Soto is heading to San Diego.

    Oh well . . .

    ReplyDelete
  16. Austin Romine is being DFAed. Not that we need him...though he might be better than Higgy, and I say that with a heavy heart.

    ReplyDelete

  17. JM, your love affair with Romine is legendary

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sources: #Padres and #Nationals have agreed in principle on a Juan Soto trade, with Josh Bell also going to San Diego.

    ReplyDelete
  19. one can not enjoy a tasty salad unless it is loaded with Romine

    ReplyDelete
  20. Soto AND Bell. SD just got very scary.

    ReplyDelete
  21. And LUKE!

    Never forget the Voitster

    ReplyDelete
  22. JM

Well good for them. As long as we never have to face them in the World Series. And you know we won't. They're far, far away!

And not on a team we have to face in the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, thank God for that.

Dick, I did have a soft spot for the Last Austin. Now, I don't really care that much, but an upgrade over Higgy (sob!) is warranted. And Romine is cheap as they get.

If only we could get David Robertson, too.... :-D

    ReplyDelete
  24. Aren't the Padres a religious team? You know, like the old House of David?

    ReplyDelete

  26. Yes they are. And with their latest acquisitions, they are going to perform an exorcism on the Dodgers.

    Amen.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Are the guys that we got really any better than the guys we gave up? Maybe incrementally, for the moment.

I'm sorry that we gave up Sears. Seems to me that Sears could've pitched a lot of innings out of the pen. He did nothing wrong while he was here. And the two W's, never even got a sniff here.

We could have done this whole thing a lot differently. The two W's could have been brought up a lot earlier and developed.

And to those who say that prospects are nothing, well, the guys who we got might be nothing as well. Montas, coming off a shoulder injury, who knows if he doesn't blow out in short order? And the relievers that we got, who knows if they'll pitch well or if they'll turn into the Joey Gallo version of pitching? These are not just speculations. We've all seen Brain Cashman's pitching acquisitions many times before. How did those turn out?

And after all that, we didn't even land a real game changer. Is Montas really going to be better than than Sears or the two W's? After the Sonny Gray debacle, I'm kind of afraid of getting Oakland pitchers. And it looks like Soto is gone to California. And we got ... Benintendi.... Sigh.....

    ReplyDelete

  28. And San Diego didn't just land Soto. The Nats threw in Josh Bell as well.

    Stacked lineup.

San Diego didn't give up the entire store either. I'd say the Nats got hosed on this deal.

Somewhere in this world there are teams and GMs who know a good deal when they see one.

    ReplyDelete

  29. San Diego has hit several home runs this week:

They acquired Josh Hader, the best closer in the game, in a trade with the Brewers.

The Padres made Joe Musgrove’s five-year contract extension official.

Wil Myers was activated after two months on the injured list.

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit against live pitching for the first time since his March wrist surgery

The next two months in SoCal are going to be very interesting.

What did our illustrious Intern do? Mediocrity at best. But then again, that's his claim to fame.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm miffed that we didn't get Soto. I would've offered the Nats their pick, ANY SIX of our prospects for Soto. And if they want Gleyber Torres, we could throw him in as well. After all, Cashman never develops prospects anyway, so what difference does it make? His salary is practically a steal for a potential WS championship.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I can't believe they couldn't better that SD offer. Instead they go out and get Frankie Valli, who will last 3 2/3 innings in his one and only playoff start. Un-ffing-believable

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Dick...ya know who else didn't get Soto? The Mets. With all of Stevie Cohen's money, they couldn't get him either...ya think that fanbase is happy with this turn of events?

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Celerino Sanchez, yeah, it looks like the stupid Brain Cashman refused to make an offer like my suggestion. He must've held out on the Martian, Volpe and others. That was stupid, real stupid. So instead of Soto, we get mediocrity like Benintendi and a pitcher who might blow up at any time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Respectfully disagree, Mildred.

Trivino is just plain bad. And nobody has explained, yet, the weird home-and-away disparities in the numbers for Montas and Effross.

Montas sounds like someone who is a mediocrity, at best, away from Oakland, with arm troubles and PED problems looming in his background. Effross' weird, much-better ERA at Wrigley raises alarms, too, though I'm not sure just why.

He's a sidearmer, and those kinds can be awfully effective—until they're not. Byung Kim comes to mind.

Bottom line: I think we would have been just as well off sticking Schmidt into the rotation and Sears and Waldichuk into the pen, and giving them a shot. And maybe pick up Robertson and Willson Contreras as well, if we could.

What Cashman did will, yet again, do nothing to enhance our chances in October.

    ReplyDelete
  37. By the by, I couldn't imagine why Coops and HAL would get rid of Joey just to sign the even worse Brett Phillips, as JM mentioned.

Then I looked at their salaries.

    Joey: $10.275 million.

    Phillips: $1.4 million.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  38. In my view, we didn't give up a "prospect" in Sears. He'd already performed well at the major league level. So many prospects come up here and they suck and get sent back down. So those guys who sucked their first few times up are still "prospects" and they have yet to prove that they belong in the majors. We gave up an already proven commodity in Sears. At least, he was more than half way there. And a lefty. No wonder the A's wanted him. I would've asked for him too if I was the other team's GM.

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Hoss, we still have Schmidt at least, right? I haven't heard that he's been given away, yet.

    ReplyDelete
  40. We must've given away Sears because he's not 6'8" like just about every pitcher these days.

    ReplyDelete

  41. With three hours to go, The Intern better have a deal up his sleeve, because with this bunch the possibility of the Yankees being an also-ran have increased.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @DickAllen, probably that does it for the big moves. If Montas works out, then it appears to me that the stupid Brain has incrementally improved the team. But Gallo ain't going anywhere. Taking Gallo out and inserting either Florial or Andujar makes the team much, much better.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @Hammer - that's fine but when Stanton comes back Florial or AnJUjar ends up back in SWB...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Personally Hammer, I’d take Gallo out and shoot him.

    A waste of space.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Once again, the Yankees have only taken half measures. With Soto and Bell we could have easily gone to the WS and won.

To get beat out by San Diego is insulting.

Since when did the intern become a prospect hugger?

I would have given the Nats a list of twenty of our best prospects and said “Take your pick.”

    Pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The more I think about our recent moves, the more underwhelmed I am. Not nearly ready to pass judgement on Benni, but we’re waiting…Montas is good, but not enough to really move the needle in October, Trivino has been awful all year.I don’t really know enough about Effross. And…that’s it, right? Did I miss anyone? Nope.

Meanwhile, Donaldson, Hicks, Gallo, Higashioka are still here (as of this writing) stinking up the joint. Andujar sits in his Scranton motel room plotting his vengeance. Florial watches his career evaporate before his very eyes. Cashman chortles, Boone gaslights, and Scrooge McDuck sits behind his desk counting silver and weeping about every Judge home run.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @DickAllen, I think once again that management is purposefully trying to torpedo the season. This continuing quest for mediocrity is only explainable by my theory that they don't really want to win.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yes, Hammer, Schmidt is still with us at least, so good for that. It's just that I would have tried him in the no. 5 slot if only Montas was still available.

And I agree, DickAllen. It IS insulting—and more proof that, for all their rhetoric, these guys at the top have no idea what the Yankees are really about.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  60. Clayton Beeter must have one arm or one leg, is on the terrorist watch list or he just SUCKS!

    ReplyDelete
  61. The skinny on Beeter which rhymes with Jeter...

Beeter showcased stuff arguably as good as any college starter in the 2020 Draft, but the Dodgers were able to grab him in the supplemental second round because his medical record was more extensive than his track record. He had Tommy John surgery in December 2017 before his first season at Texas Tech and a follow-up arthroscopic elbow procedure seven months later before leading the Red Raiders' 2019 College World Series semifinalists with eight saves and dominating in four starts as a redshirt sophomore. Los Angeles signed him for an over-slot $1,196,500 and handled him with great care in his 2021 pro debut, limiting him to 52 1/3 innings in 28 games (27 starts).

Beeter has a pair of pitches that grade as well above-average when at their best. He sits at 93-96 mph and touches 98 mph with a fastball that has good carry, and a high-spin low-80s curveball that plays off his heater well by dropping through the bottom of the zone. He can flash a solid low-80s changeup with some sink and fade but doesn't use it very often.

Using an overhand slot that creates deception and downhill plane, Beeter tunnels all of his pitches well. With the exception of the shortened 2020 college season, he has exhibited fringy control, and his delivery may not be conducive to throwing more strikes. The Dodgers will try to stretch him out as a starter in 2022, with the fallback of making him a high-leverage reliever if that doesn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Good riddance Joey Twitch!
Thank God he's gone. Maybe they'll finally bring up Florial.

I'd be very surprised if the Red Sox don't unload JD to a contender. Maybe the Braves ?

    ReplyDelete
  63. There is a God! Thank the Good Lord that Gallo is gonzo.

My take on this is that the chief contract negotiator for Cashman, whoever that is, must have told Cashman and HAL that hanging Gallows over Judge's head at the negotiating table and threatening to extend Gallows long term over re-signing Judge was crazy and that Yankee management would get laughed right out of the negotiating room. He must've told them that Judge and his agent would have been laughing so hard that they would never have been able to work out a new deal with the Yankees. They never would've stopped laughing. They would've been laughing so hard that they would've been crying and holding their guts, trying to keep their sides from splitting.

    ReplyDelete

  70. I am weeping with joy over the loss of Gallo

    Life is good

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm still stunned that we got a live body for Gallo. And in this report from Yahoo! Sports is a passage that contains everything that's wrong with how we think about baseball today:

While always boasting an extreme game that relied on walks and homers, Gallo was a very productive player from 2017 until the trade last year. Over that span, he racked up 138 homers while slashing .214/.340/.507, which was 20 percent better than the league average hitter by the park-adjusted wRC+ metric.

Ah, so that's why we got him! He was 20 percent better than the park-adjusted wRC+ metric.

    ReplyDelete
  72. @ranger_lp "@Carl...Denis Potvin already had that nickname..."

Now that is a low blow, a very low blow.

    ReplyDelete
  73. By the by, Clayton Beeter's lifetime minor league record: 0-9, 4.59. That's right, he's never won a game in the pros.

  92. So Cashman isn't the only GM with the occasional or chronic cognitive deficit. Why would ANY team give up anything for Gallo? Just baffling.

  93. It’s a double meaning AA!

Say, we’re not getting political here are we? I’m already banned from Twitter, and getting rejected by Yahoo.
If you guys dump me, it’s over. Game over man, game over!

  94. Padres are suddenly mythic.

  95. 999, always be reasonable and nonvivcious and humorous. Nobody bans you.

    ReplyDelete
  96. JM, i know…I’d just rather this be a politics-free space…

  97. I say ban borntorun999--if he's been banned by Yahoo and Twitter, the guy's nothing but trouble. In fact, ban JM too for wanting people to be reasonable--sounds very boring.

  98. Who are we getting now? Javy Lopez?

  99. I throw myself on the mercy of the mercy of the court

  100. harrison bader for jordan montgomery

    ReplyDelete
  101. Monty for an INJURED fourth outfielder? Cashman needs emergency medical attention.

    ReplyDelete
  102. MLB network is claiming this happened. Not in press yet, so maybe. Or not.

    Bader is on the DL.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Who is going to pitch for this team? Devi Garcia?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Bader has a mean folly floater, I hear.

    ReplyDelete
  105. He's not good when he's healthy. Wtf?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I honestly think part of this preference for white nonentities like Bader over players like Florial and Andujar is organizational racism. I've long believed that the Yankees have a tacit quota on black players. I can't prove it, but I suspect it as part of the right-wing martial All-American ethos inherited from George.

  107. Barney, I tend to believe it. Something is decidedly fishy.

And wtf is Monty for Bader? That looks like a terrible trade.

    ReplyDelete
  108. It’s official Montgomery for Bader . He’s on the IL with plantar fasciitis which can linger. Possible he could be out until Sept, or even the remainder of the year. Not sure what the point of this trade is, someone will have to explain. Looks like Johnny Broto is our top AAA pitching option. Hope you like Domingo German, ‘cause we got him.. German for Bader would go down a lot smoother, but the Cards aren’t that dumb.

  109. Barney/JM, that would be an outrage that would shake my fandom.

    ReplyDelete
  110. @Barney, I have to agree with you on that point. Looks like Yankee management doesn't want to make the everyday lineup too black. So they traded a healthy white guy for another (injured) white guy. And they refuse to bring up the obvious centerfield/left field replacements Florial and Andujar. Even though Andujar is obviously a much better hitter than Bader. It's deplorable, disgusting. If we give them the benefit of the doubt, it's possible it might not even be a conscious decision. They automatically assume that a white player is more valuable than a black player. But I think it's a conscious decision. Terrible, either way.

  111. Bader is a center fielder. Currently injured. But the future for Hicks? Is Cashman finally hedging that lousy contract?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Hammer, Barney, it's suspicious as hell. Bothers me big time.

    ReplyDelete
  113. And we still have Duckinson, as expected. A year from now, Cashman may give up and trade the lame-o.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Curry and baldy are hitting Josh hard. When the YES guys start that, it's a sign. Though not traded, he's on notice.

    ReplyDelete
  115. With Hicks slumping again, Bader becomes an option for the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I'm thinking they didn't want Taillon so they gave up Monty.
