"We play today, we win today, dass-nah-it!"

I abandoned the game after three batters yesterday. Apparently I was not alone. The rest of the Yankees abandoned the game as well.

Here's the thing, winning teams believe they are going to win and losing teams know that eventually even with, say... a twenty three point lead (Cough. Knicks. Last night sucked all around.), they are going to blow it.

Currently, the Yankees take the field as a losing team. They know that, even if their pitchers get out the first nine men in order, a bad call or an error will cause their starter to lose it and lose the game.

By the way, the same pitchers who go mental when they don't get a call never seem to mind when they benefit from a bad call for the batter.

But I digress...

The pressure to score when your down five in a downpour and it's only the first inning.. When they see a no doubter knocked down by the wind a rain and hit the literal top of the wall and stay on the field... when they can never get a guy in with second and third and less than two outs... their lights go out. Every opposing pitcher becomes a candidate for a Cy Young.

You know a team is bad when a potential knee injury to its number three starter is considered a blessing.

With the exception of when Fried pitches the Yankee batters are battered before they step up to the plate.

To make it worse,  even if they get a lead, a nice lead, they know the pen will cough it up. That eventually they will blow it.

  1. Well said Doug, well said…today may be Warren’s last chance to hold on to his spot in the rotation. Tomorrow is Rodent…so cheer down!

Funny (funny sad, not funny ha-ha) that the team’s starting rotation, considered among the best and deepest at the start of S/T, is now arguably the weakest and the worst.

    You can’t predict - ah, fuck it…

  2. Glad we're supposed to be waiting for Stanton's return. Right. I'm also waiting for King Kong Keller and Britt Burns to get off the DL. Any day now, Jacoby Ellsbury will heal, and be ready to go, better than ever. Gil Patterson, too.

  3. I understand there are cargo cults out in the Pacific who heard about our waiting on Stanton, and laughed themselves silly. "Dude, that guys is NEVER coming back! And if he does, he'll just get hurt again. Wait, is that a plane???"

  4. Hey Hoss - - - Do you still have that Time Machine stored below 23rd and Lex?

Can I book it for a week in late July?

    1. Can you get 1923 on that thing?

I'd try 1976 but still wouldn't get into Studio 54. No great loss. CBGB, on the other hand...

  5. Wasn't King Kong Keller married to Fay Wray? Think so.

  6. If Warren stinks he stays in the rotation because who else is there? Rodent stays because he's paid a lot of money to be a lousy starter and who else is there? Carrasco .... aw, screw it.

  7. Actually, he hated that nickname. Helluva right fielder, though. I'm up for that time machine, to go back to almost any other era of Yankeedom; even the bad times would be cheaper and more entertaining.

Pre-game today, YES said the big thing today will be to get 5 innings out of Warren. Yeah, that's one high bar.

    1. I had dinner last night with a friend of the family since the 1960s, and he was at the stadium with my dad and me when there were so few people in the stands you could hear the on-field chatter. I started laughing because I told the same story when we met at Jane St. Tavern.

  8. And they're dancing a jig in the owner's box. Stroman is on the 15-day DL. No 140 innings for you!

  9. And of course, more fan torture today. Cold, rainy...but don't ever, ever play a doubleheader! NOOO! That's giving money away, and of course Hal earned every cent...

  10. Got a break, thanks to the SF left fielder. Bellinger seems to have caught the "stand at home and admire your blast" disease."

  11. Yankees fans should be sad and not attend the game. Injuries aside, another far from masterpiece by Genius Cashman.

  12. So will Schmidt be back to take Stroman's slot? And hopefully keep it.

  13. YGY ( via Phillies nation) mentioned Spencer Turnbull as the best available SP still on the market: https://www.philliesnation.com/2025/04/philadelphia-phillies-mlb-free-agent-scott-boras-spencer-turnbull-starting-pitcher/

He is injury prone though, and a Boras client. Seems doubtful Steinscammer would even want to add a relatively moderate deal, but he is available…

  18. I'm beginning to see why Milwaukee got rid of him.

Encouraged a bit by Warren though

  19. Warren did look sharp today. God knows we needed that.
