The New YorkerHere’s what we saw around home plate, starting in late September: Curtis Granderson spins to the right, drops his head, and becomes suddenly smaller as he turns toward the dugout. Nick Swisher makes a little backward lean as an inside fastball goes by, throws up his head as the ump punches him out, then smiles knowingly as he heads back to the bench. Robbie Cano, grounding out to second once again, maintains unconcern or maybe disconcern as he slants off toward foul ground after the out: he’s an evening dog-walker out there, in no hurry to get home. A-Rod, popping up, takes a backward step, bumps the upper part of his bat with his fist—bad bat—turns left and lifts his chin on departure, as if he were counting the house. We Yankee fans know all this by heart; watching the Yankees make outs is what we’re really good at now.

It's not new, the Yankees' failure to hit
From 2012, Roger Angell...
for a moment there in the bottom of the 7th, I felt the smell of pineapple getting stronger. hope not. I've had much too much.
ReplyDeleteas the Yankee world turns....OUR CONSUMING HATRED FOR GIRARDI AND HIS IDIOTIC MANAGEMENT GROWS TO A FEVERISH PITCH!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst, when did Roger Angell become a Yankees fan? The guy never made any bones about it; he was for the Mets and the Red Sox.
ReplyDeleteSecond...ALL-CAPS, I gotta give Girardi a little credit today. He DID pull Garcia before what was going to obviously be the two-run, Longoria bomb that tied the game. In came Chad Green, game saved.
But the question grows...why on earth did we get Garcia? The Master kept saying today how it was just as well, for a "hit his spots pitcher like Garcia, to pull him before they get to see him the third time around."
Great! We got a "starter" who can't go 5 innings!
The Master kept saying today, too, that Garcia was "a veteran, who knows what to do." Oh. I guess that's why he kept falling behind every single hitter.
This was the scrub-filled lineup of a poor-hitting team today. Against any real contender, Garcia would be toast. Why the hell was he picked up?
Also today, Clint Frazier joined the ranks of the Unsullied by Clutchness, leaving an incredible 8 men on board—ably filling in for Judge's usual lack of clutches. Sanchez also managed to make out in the biggest situation he faced all day.
ReplyDeleteHey, I kid, I kid. I know, they're rookies, they're gonna have plenty of bad moments, you have to give them time.
But this underscores the fact that this team is nowhere near being a contender—and how moronic Cashman's "win now" moves were. These guys are at least 2-3 years from reaching their full potential—if they ever do.
The Master had a surprising remark, when he and Suzyn briefly mentioned the kids still on the farm:
"The Yankees have a lot of talent down there—not that they've got much out of it yet."
I'm hoping this will be taken the same way that the slightest, cryptic remark by the Emperor Hirohito used to be taken by the Japanese General Staff, as a devastating criticism and order for a completely new strategy.
Maybe Cashman will fall on his sword.
Speaking of Japan, The Master had a great koan today, talking about how well certain guys hit certain pitchers:
ReplyDelete"Maybe it's not the hitter, or the pitcher, but where the ball is."
Makes you think.
WASN'T ME IN THE EARLIER TEXT HOSS.....
ReplyDeleteANOTHER COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT CASE COMING....
I WAS HAPPY TODAY GIRARDI TOOK OUT GARCIA, AS I TEXTED MY BUDDY , "IF GARCIA STAYS IN THIS GAME, LONGORIA WILL TIE IT, NO DOUBT."
HOWEVER!
WHY THE HELL DID HE TAKE OUT DELLIN?
WASN'T THERE 2 OUTS?
VERY RISKY....
NO BIRD AGAIN TODAY....(AGAINST A RIGHTY NO LESS).
SO DISAPPOINTING
AT LEAST WE WON.
Realized too late it wasn't you!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Bird is a disappointment. Sterling was saying today he counted on him to hit 35-40 home runs.
But...we do have 2 other first basemen in the minors. Why aren't they up??
OK, I'll give Joe credit for yanking Garcia, even if there was only 1 out left in the 5th, sure - - but: 1) He's gonna' blow out the Chad-Monster (a la Scotty Proctor); and WHY did he take out Dellin, right after he found his breaking-ball, and struck out one of their best sluggers? Then, he goes completely AGAINST his lefty-right matchy-thingy, and puts in El Chapo, He Who Sweats More than Richard Simmons - - to pitch against a righty - - and thus, the REAL fun began...So, Dell pitched to three people - - and handful of pitches - - then the Garage-Venter ended up sweating two gallons, at least - - and throwing about 40+ pitches.
ReplyDeleteThis was a WIN which caused me pine-apples - - thanks, Joey!! Whatta'ya' going to do tomorrow to torture us??
and, Cash-Puss: Why the HELL is Gary Cooper not up here, playing first?? I mean, all he has done since I learned of him, is RAKE - - and play a decent, natural 1B.
Can't have that, can we - - I know, you prefer #12, hitting into a DP, often as not.
LB (No J)
