The Crossroad

So if John Sterling announces his retirement on Friday, what do we do?

He is the reason we are here.  We began because he miscalled plays on the radio ( e.g. ..." it is high, it is far, it is.....caught....) etc).

We grew old together.  Yankee fans and Yankee voice.

Now, it seems, we may outlive him.  Not literally, we hope, but in context.  And, in this case, context is all that matters.

Do we simply change the title of this blog to " It Was High, It Was Far, It Was Caught?"

Does el Duque still arise at 4:30 am every day to write the Lede?

This becomes a philosophical discussion of existence?

Are we lost?

  1. So it was announced today...

I find the timing a bit suspicious as WFAN announced a new Program Director today. Probably the first thing he did was to force John out...

Michael Kay said John was tired but he didn't have a health concern presently other than that.

I'm starting the conspiracy theory here...

  2. ranger, your theory is well worth looking into. Alternatively, maybe John decided he couldn't work for the new guy, who probably thinks Beyonce is better than Ethel Merman.

  3. "Are we lost?" I don't think so, Alphonso.

I'm on the email list to Arnold Schwarzenegger's message club. A little while back, he sent an email about getting old but still carrying on. Arnold said some old geyser gave him the best advice that he ever got. When everyone asked the old geyser how he keeps going on with his work, he said "what choice do I have?"

So it is with the blog, so it is with all of us. What choice do we have? We'll keep carrying the flag as long as we can, because we can.

This IIH IIF II ... C blog can be a tribute to The Master. Flamboyant? Pompous? Bombastic? Fuck, yeah! But what a great baritone voice! There'll never be another one like him!

  4. I'll close with one of The Master's Sterling-isms. We've got to ... keep on keepin' on.

  6. Here's a thought. No doubt that John has heard about this site by now. Perhaps he reads it on occasion. My idea is that El Duque, Alphonso, or Stang might contact John and see if he'd like to comment whenever he feels the need. He has the time. Horace could ask for his input on another book while mentioning his current one and sending him a copy. I'll pay for that copy. He might be amenable.
