Let us now pause to wish The Say Hey Kid a happy 90th birthday.

And while we wring our hands at the sad state of New York Yankees baseball, it is good to note that the Angels (who are clearly not) have unceremoniously released - I mean DUMPED - the great Albert Pujols - the greatest hitter of his generation. Absolutely disgusting treatment.

And then, in an aptly named Flushing, the Mutts decPitated their hitting coaches - neither of whom had a single at-bat this year.

Things could be worse in the Bronx.

L'Grande Rouge!!!

I think I would like it best if both Clint and Miguel went on tears to become true elite major league hitters. Both of the. I'm a greedy fat ass. And I still want it. Both.

If I remember correctly, McBroom is a jinx and every time he's mentioned they lose.

I am with Winnie. Let's have a few hitters (to go with our pitchers). It would probably allow the pitchers, including the relievers, to do something awesome -- breathe!

Apologies to Rusty Staun?

I could kick Chad Green.

Could we be lucky enough to put Hicks on the IL?

DickAllen said...

Get him out of there, put Clint in CF, Miggy in LF...

Nah. We couldn’t be that lucky

TheWinWarblist said...

It wasn't China Beauregard. It was bats. Not baseball bats. Bats, as in the flying echo locating rats of the night sky. Asian bats. From China.

No loss this year has better exemplified the shortcomings of Cashman's system or the team he has built.

Start with the 3-man bench, including the back-up catcher. If the Oft-Injured Hicks HAD been hurt today, the Yanks had nobody to put in. Well, I guess they could have had Stanton try to play the field. But Suzie and The Master really thought they would try putting Sanchez or Higgy in the field first.

I know, I know: Ragnar was hurt. But the fact that your .164-hitting back-up is injured shouldn't be an excuse for anything. Somebody else—Florial? Holder?—should have been in the Yankees' dugout today.

Having so small a bench SHOULD mean a great bullpen, at least. Instead, BOTH Yankees relievers today walked Kyle Tucker, a .183 hitter coming into the game. He scored both times.

That's simply unacceptable. Sure, maybe he gets a hit. Blind pigs, you know? But you have to have to have to have to challenge him in that situation...

HoraceClarke66 said...

Then there is the problem with Robomanager.

Yanks cut the Astros' lead to 5-4, bottom of the 8th, thanks to the Suddenly Hustling Torres. Because the Oft-Injured Hicks had cramps—he was TOLD not to eat anything within an hour of the game!—he's on first base, with one out.

The slow of foot Higgy is up. You're Aaron Boone, and your old remaining sub is Sancho.

So, do you have Higgy try a bunt to at least move up O.I. Hicks and hope maybe Gardy can single to tie the game?

Of course not! You have Higgy in there swinging away, hoping for the miracle, two-run homer against Houston's closer. Higgy grounds into a double-play. Gardner DOES single, leading off the 9th.

Would he have done so in the 8th? No telling. But if he had...

HoraceClarke66 said...

...Saddest of all, though, was the performance of Mike Ford.

In that same 8th inning, with Torres on first and the whole left side of the Astros' infield open—according to The Master—and his career hanging by a thread, our Princeton grad could not bring himself to try to push a swinging bunt or SOMETHING down toward third.

Instead, Ford, who has come up through the Yankees' system and thoroughly internalized the "Three True Outcomes" idea of baseball, took a called strike two. He took a called strike three—and walked away from the plate, shaking his head.

He had been having a hard time with the umpiring all series long, The Master told us, not liking the strike calls he was getting.

Aww. Gee, Princeton, you'd think you might have figured out that guys batting .091 don't usually get the break on balls and strikes. Enjoy Scranton!
