We traded young, live arms, which somehow the Yankees have convinced us - or maybe themselves - happen to grow on trees. Last week, we fantasized about the the "W's" - Waldichuk and Wesneski. Now, they're gone, but the dealing isn't done - in the words of Jordan Peele - Nope - not by a longshot.
This is the part of the movie where Hercule Poirot gathers the dinner guests and signals the killer. We should be hiding in our cellars, awaiting what's next, as the gunfire in the distance keeps closing in. (Three movie metaphors, mixed in a blender: Now THAT's blogging, eh?)
The latest blast? Apparently, the Redsocks plan to punt on 2022. They traded Christian Vazquez - to fucking Houston, of course - who has killed us in past autumns. (They received an intriguing haul - a 23-year-old 3B who is hitting .321 with 21 HRs at Triple A, and an OF - also 23 - with 15 HRs and .249 at Double A. But why a 3B? Would they move the future billionaire Devers?) Who in the name of Mookie Betts could go next: Xander Bogaerts? JD Martinez? Nathan Eovaldi? If Boston cleans house - and GM Chaim Bloom was the horse auctioneer in Tampa - today's events could shake the ground beneath us.
(Then again, Boston later traded for Tommy Pham, 34, so - WTF, Bloom?)
Also, there are weird signs that Tampa intends to go all in on the wild card race - maybe even with Joey Gallo. Damn. For starters, Brian Cashman would never trade Gallo to a divisional rival, right? Thus, Tampa's interest should be good news, right? Considering how bad he's been, we should be happy that anybody wants him, right?
Or was it us? Was it New York? Was our crude IIHIIFIIc mockery a factor in bringing Gallo down? Were we mean to him? Did we hurt his feelings? Is it our fault?
What about Miggy? Why hasn't Miguel Andujar been mentioned in trades? Someday, some GM is going to look really smart for giving him a shot. What if Tampa suddenly starts sniffing around for ex-Yanks with scores to settle?
What is the plan for Estevan Florial, whom the Yankees hyped for years and who is now hitting .292 with 14 HRs and 30 RBIs at Scranton? Thus far, the strategy is to pretend he doesn't exist. Do we do this until he's 30?
Why keep all three SS prospects? Could it be that Anthony Volpe is NOT as sure a bet as advertised? Is Cashman keeping all three in the hope that ONE becomes the long term solution? Because IKF is not.
With Josh Donaldson floundering, are other moves in sight?

I know everyone is concerned about all the pitchers we've traded away...well..we drafted a bunch of college pitchers so I wouldn't get all caught up in what we let go...
Donaldson is sooooooo expendable. He's a drag, man. But you think Cashman will get rid of him? What, does he have a Gallo-Donaldson package available for a few cases of Dubble Bubble?

It doesn't matter that DJ should be our regular at third--a guy who plays great defense and also hits. CASHMAN IS NEVER WRONG. At least until he's beaten some poor guy like Gallo to the point of mental instability, and gives up. But Gallo, as of this morning, is still with us. Somewhere. So the odds of Duckinson moving are likely zero.
I do wish we could land Robertson for the bullpen. It's a Hollywood ending for his career, coming back to his post-Mo haunt during a personally magical season.
But gee, if we got Robertson, where would we put Trivino and his 6.75 ERA? I mean, we just got him, and he's yet another chance for Cashman to prove his genii-ness.

A Lot To Unpack
Maybe I have Astros on the brain, but they did what I was advocating the Yankees should try to do, which was, fill the holes in their lineup. By acquiring Vazquez from the Red Sox and Trey Mancini from the O’s, the Astros made their batting order pretty much bullet proof.
That the two guys they got play well against the Yankees makes it that much harder to take.
As to our acquisitions…
Sure, Benintendi is a big upgrade over Gallo but who wouldn’t be? I think Barney was right, we may never hear the home run call. But right now his AYGHAB is 7.2 which is not bad at all.
Montas, if not hurt, he is the number two we needed even if it cost us Waldichuk, who BTW was on the verge of becoming my favorite pitcher. Don’t ask me why but it’s true. Also, Sears! All he does is get guys out. But you have to give to get.
The Cubs guy – He’s a rookie and succeeding so that one sounds like a win in exchange for minor leaguers.
Did these moves make it easier to beat Houston? Meh.
We’re still running Donaldson, Hicks, and Higgy out there. How can you win close games when a third of your lineup is pretty much worthless. Then again, it used to be four. Don’t worry. Gallo doesn’t make it to game time.

Forget the guys we gave up…they’re prospects. When they’re our prospects they stink, like Florial, and only after they’ve been traded do they become bona fide perennial MLB all stars. That’s the way we as fans roll. So forget them.
They got E-Floss - he’s good! If Boonehead actually uses him against a string of right handed hitters instead of bringing in Peralta we might have something there. He also has a ton of team control left so he’s not just a rental. It’s a good trade.
They got Montas - he’s good! Maybe not Verlander good but good. Five minutes after the trade they moved Severino from the 15 day to the 60 day. They stashed him there, he’ll do his workouts, throw a few rehabs in Hudson Valley, and be back fresh as a daisy next month. Limits his innings and keeps the roster spot open, and come playoff time they’ll have Cole, Cortes, Montas, Montgomery, Severino, Taillion, and the German. Some will be starters, others will come out of the bullpen, just like Houston does. If Severino looks good they can extend him and next year’s rotation is set.
Besides this they kept the shortstops. That’s good because we’ll probably need one of those. Also keeps the best chips for a Soto trade, which isn’t happening, I know that, but if it does it’ll take a lot of the stink off the Gallo and Donaldson trades (not the Hicks contract though; that smell will never go away).
See what happens today but so far Cashstrapped has done pretty well. Shored up the pitching, kept Severino in the mix for the post season, and Soto is still in play with the Yankees’ best trade chips available. Pains me to say it but I’m semi-optimistic.

And to those who say that prospects are nothing, well, the guys who we got might be nothing as well. Montas, coming off a shoulder injury, who knows if he doesn't blow out in short order? And the relievers that we got, who knows if they'll pitch well or if they'll turn into the Joey Gallo version of pitching? These are not just speculations. We've all seen Brain Cashman's pitching acquisitions many times before. How did those turn out?
And after all that, we didn't even land a real game changer. Is Montas really going to be better than than Sears or the two W's? After the Sonny Gray debacle, I'm kind of afraid of getting Oakland pitchers. And it looks like Soto is gone to California. And we got ... Benintendi.... Sigh.....

Trivino is just plain bad. And nobody has explained, yet, the weird home-and-away disparities in the numbers for Montas and Effross.
Montas sounds like someone who is a mediocrity, at best, away from Oakland, with arm troubles and PED problems looming in his background. Effross' weird, much-better ERA at Wrigley raises alarms, too, though I'm not sure just why.
He's a sidearmer, and those kinds can be awfully effective—until they're not. Byung Kim comes to mind.
Bottom line: I think we would have been just as well off sticking Schmidt into the rotation and Sears and Waldichuk into the pen, and giving them a shot. And maybe pick up Robertson and Willson Contreras as well, if we could.
What Cashman did will, yet again, do nothing to enhance our chances in October.

Beeter showcased stuff arguably as good as any college starter in the 2020 Draft, but the Dodgers were able to grab him in the supplemental second round because his medical record was more extensive than his track record. He had Tommy John surgery in December 2017 before his first season at Texas Tech and a follow-up arthroscopic elbow procedure seven months later before leading the Red Raiders' 2019 College World Series semifinalists with eight saves and dominating in four starts as a redshirt sophomore. Los Angeles signed him for an over-slot $1,196,500 and handled him with great care in his 2021 pro debut, limiting him to 52 1/3 innings in 28 games (27 starts).
Beeter has a pair of pitches that grade as well above-average when at their best. He sits at 93-96 mph and touches 98 mph with a fastball that has good carry, and a high-spin low-80s curveball that plays off his heater well by dropping through the bottom of the zone. He can flash a solid low-80s changeup with some sink and fade but doesn't use it very often.
Using an overhand slot that creates deception and downhill plane, Beeter tunnels all of his pitches well. With the exception of the shortened 2020 college season, he has exhibited fringy control, and his delivery may not be conducive to throwing more strikes. The Dodgers will try to stretch him out as a starter in 2022, with the fallback of making him a high-leverage reliever if that doesn't work.

He must've told them that Judge and his agent would have been laughing so hard that they would never have been able to work out a new deal with the Yankees. They never would've stopped laughing. They would've been laughing so hard that they would've been crying and holding their guts, trying to keep their sides from splitting.
In case Beeter ever makes the team, his nickname should be "Wife" Beeter. Instead of a bobblehead give away, they should hand out sleeveless, ribbed whited tee shirts.

@Barney, I have to agree with you on that point. Looks like Yankee management doesn't want to make the everyday lineup too black. So they traded a healthy white guy for another (injured) white guy. And they refuse to bring up the obvious centerfield/left field replacements Florial and Andujar. Even though Andujar is obviously a much better hitter than Bader. It's deplorable, disgusting. If we give them the benefit of the doubt, it's possible it might not even be a conscious decision. They automatically assume that a white player is more valuable than a black player.
