Okay, enough of running down Shohei Ohtani to show why he should not be the AL MVP in 2022. And believe me, I don't want to knock the guy. He's an amazing athlete, and what he does is a lot of fun.
He's just not the greatest of all-time, and just not someone doing what has never been done before...none of which, by itself, makes Aaron Judge the MVP this year.
So, time for a positive argument for The Judge. Which can revolve around one statistic.
I'm talking about something called "Adjust OPS+." Sounds pretty wonky, I know. It is supposed to consist of a player's on-base percentage and slugging average—your basic OPS—plus adjustments to league averages and ballparks figured in.
Mr. Selbe, to his credit, notes that Judge this year, at 211—on't ask how these figures are figured because...you'll fall asleep before I'm finished explaining—is the highest total by any player since Barry Bonds ran up a 263 OPS+ in 2004.
But of course...
Mr. Bonds was cheating. Which is how he ran up the three highest, OPS+ season marks in major-league history.
Where does Judge's 211 rank on that all-time list? An impressive—if not spectacular—24th.
Baseballreference has begun to rank Negro League players in their all-time rankings—as well as 19th-century ballplayers—and with their inclusion, Judge's 2022 OPS+ season drops to 54th all-time.
Sorry, but it is simply impossible to compare the pre-1900 game to the one played afterwards. Nor, sorry to say, is it possible to effectively compare the haphazard, truncated seasons of the Negro Leagues to those of the majors.
Don't get me wrong.
I think it's a nice tribute by baseballreference, and I think the exclusion of Black (and most Hispanic) players under Jim Crow baseball was atrocious. No doubt, all of the Black and Hispanic players in these all-time lists would have been major-league stars, and some of them—Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Satchel Paige, Martin Dihigo (Another guy who did what "only" Shohei Ohtani supposedly did, which was hit and pitch at a very high level. Only he also played almost every other position on the field, as well. But I digress!)—might have been the greatest of all time.
But to be completely fair, let's also throw out all the white guys listed here who played during Jim Crow baseball days. Indeed, let's eliminate, for the sake of argument, all the best, OPS+ seasons from:
—PED cheaters
—19th-century ballplayers
—Negro League players
—White players before 1947
Where does that leave Judge's 2022, single-season, OPS+ mark of 211?
Fifth, all-time—or maybe fourth, or even third best.
The only players to run up a better mark under the criteria stated were:
Ted Williams, 233, 1957
Mickey Mantle, 221, 1957
Juan Soto, 217, 2020
Frank Thomas, 212, 1994
But hold on a moment.
Soto's mark, admirable as it was, was set during the 60-game, 2020 Covid season. The Big Hurt's big year was another truncated season, the 1994 lockout year.
Throw them out as well, and Judge moves up to all third, all-time. And if you consider that the 1957 American League was still barely integrated...
Well, I'm not prepared to put even The Judge ahead of The Splendid Splinter or The Commerce Comet.
But still. Intangible—or Nick Selbe's "vague definitions"—nothing. What Aaron Judge did this past season may—in a very real, very statistical way—be unprecedented.
I'd say that makes the case for him.

Thankyou for saying that, Horace. His pitching stats this year are excellent. His offense has been good. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., had a much better year than Ohtani in 2021. As you know we have many Geek writers and too many Geek ruining the game of Baseball. I can brush my teeth and tap my shoe at the same time. Maybe you will elect me the best responder on the blog. How about you. Can you speak and tighten your belt at the same time?
Can you give all of your "CHUMS" here a sneak peak at what PT III will include ;)
Boone names Cole Game 1 starter. Every goddam person here knows who should be starting Game 1. As I’ve said many times, no matter what transpires on the field, Boone will find a way to lose for us. Then again, I’m not convinced that callow cuck is the one making the decisions. Either way, we have the WORST. FUCKING MGR. in the Bigs.
Yet there is good news!
Chapman has gone AWOL and will not be on the roster.
Addition via subtraction
Agreed, DickAllen!
And AA, if you'll notice the change in the last post...
I'm finished with Mr. Selbe—for now!
On to our inevitably flat and disappointing postseason stint. But hey, it's been a good year.
What?
Aroldis Chapstick. I'm telling you, big money there.
Nice edit, Hoss….. :)
As a professional dreamer I am still hopeful that the Yankees get to the WS.
And as long as Boone sticks to his seeds and stays away from masticating his Bazooka, we stand a chance to advance.
Whoooo hoooooooo! Unexcused absence from a practice my ass. Best news in a while.
I remember how, back in 1996 when Arlen Specter ran for the Republican presidential nomination, somebody—I think it was Al Franken—wrote that he could see a path for Specter to the nomination. It involved 15 plane crashes—or whatever the number of other Republicans running was.
I can see a way to a ring for the Yankees. It involves 7 plane crashes.
Hey, I kid, I kid! And who knows? If Seattle knocks off Houston—AND Philly knocks off Atlanta—AND the Mets knock off the Dodgers—AND Philly knocks off the Mets...
Well, in that case, I'd say we might have a chance. Otherwise, we're back to the 7 plane-crash scenario.
Rolaids...ha ha...how convenient to have that happen...so he can save face...instead of being left off roster for huge sucking reasons...
Rumor has it that Matt Carpenter will be on the ALDS roster...
HC - never forget about those pesky Sink Holes.
They can strike anywhere at anytime.
And now, lets see if we can count how many times Brian Conman says the word HEALTHY in the following article:

Mrs. Met is kinda hot.
Um, yeah, she, uh, IS, JM. I was hoping nobody else would mention that...
What mealy-mouthed nonsense from Cashman. He should be a military spokesman for the Kremlin.
They don't know if they can sign Judge? Uh-huh.
What do you think? Was Judge responsible for an extra 500,000 fans at Yankee Stadium this season? I mean, all things considered: the Yanks winning the division, the home-run chase, playoff gamesetc.
500,000 times probably at least $100/fan, we're talking $50 mill right there. Not to even mention TV ratings, etc.
And if he were to go, even a greater amount would be subtracted. Yeah, they'd better give him whatever he wants.
I still love Buck Showalter.
Showalter>>>>>Boone
Still hate the mutts.
Mets lose first place then the first round. Big fail.
At least we had the sense to stay in first and skip the first round.
“It’s over!”
So much for Timmy Trumpet…
Yeah, poor Buck! The Metsies really came apart, which surprised me.
Our turn!
When they ran the Crashman interview/presser on ESPN it seemed like the poor boy was feeling a little bit under the weather. He was a bit bloated and sniffly.
Maybe we can all chip in and send him some DayQuil and NightQuil.
He’s going to be at his best over the next few days to lead the deathstar to the promised land.
Yeah, I feel awful for him.
Love how none of the TV guys will criticize even the basic strategies of the game. The game-clincher, Soto's opposite field, broken-bat hit against Diaz, would have been an easy out with a third baseman not shifting.
But even that could not be questioned. instead, they acted as if Soto had zipped a line drive double into the corner. Absurd.
Glad to see the Mets implode, but tough for Buck! I wasn't paying much attention to the Metsies this season, but it certainly seemed like his starters kicked off this death spiral against Atlanta last weekend.
On the SNY post mortem show, they showed Buck staring into space before his interview. Was he wondering if he would get a call from YES to do our playoff postgame shows again?
Did I hear the midges are back in Cleveland?

I have this to say to "Puckered" Selbe, "Puckered, you are an imbecile and therefore your argument is completely wrong. In addition, I'd hazard a guess that you're also ugly and your mother dresses you funny."
