So, there they are: Three middling pitchers in various stages of career stress. They could easily play the Ghosts of Christmas in a Dickens show.
One is a still a kid - Luis Gil, 23 - with, as old Charles would say, great expectations.
One should be hitting his prime - Albert Abreu, 26 - assuming he'll have one.
And then there is the ghost of Yankees Past, Manny Banuelos - now 31, and a decade down the road from being untouchable in trades. Yeah, Dickens would have had a field day. But look at those zeros.
Of course, there is also the chance for a wipeout... in which case we'll see Cashman's face on the door-knocker - for the last time.
EDIT: Well, so much for this post. The Yankees just traded Abreu to Texas for a 29-year-old catcher named Jose Trevino. What does it mean? Well, it means Ben Rortvedt is going to be out longer than originally advertised. (I'm shocked... SHOCKED!) And, probably, both Gil and Manny are going to make the opening day roster. So... we're back to that 2 out of 3 (ain't bad?) scenario.
Off topic note: Via Alphonso, I've gotten into watching UCONN women's basketball, because...
a) The women's game is more exciting than the men's. It's basketball with set shots, layups and passes under the basket - it's the game before 7-footers arrived.
b) UCONN has a rich tradition around Syracuse, home town of Breanna Stewart.
c) It's great to root for a team that rises to the occasion. (The Yankees and Giants have failed us.)
d) UCONN has a great - but seemingly improbable - star in sophomore Paige Bueckers, (shades of Bill Bradley at Princeton, long long ago.)
Tonight, Connecticut plays South Carolina for the national championship. It certainly will be more watchable than the Grammys.

Well Abreau got traded for a back up catcher so that’s one down
1) Paige Bueckers is a lot of fun to watch. There are some really good YouTube compilations of her assists. She has more than a little Pete Maravich to her game.
2) Abreau will be lug nutting it for Texas having been traded for a backup catcher who has been compared favorably to the Aaron Brothers. Unfortunately, I'm referring to framing skills not HR hitting,
That said, he's light hitting at .245 which is,I don't know, 40 points higher than our former catcher. So I guess I'll take it.
I’ll take a trash can on it’s side behind the plate versus the Dirty Sanchez.
As for me, I’m praying for a Titanic-sized disaster. One in which The Intern, dressed as a woman, tries to sneak into a life raft. And winds up dying of hypothermia. It only seems fair: he’s left the Yankees out in the cold for over a decade.
After his remarks about the Astros cheating him out of his legacy, he’s already wearing the panties -you know - the kind of panties that aren’t made to house a pair of balls - a nice pair of lululemon joggers and a sports bra will complete the outfit.
Then the world will see what we already know: that The Intern has been hiding a mangina all these years and destroying what was handed to him on a silver platter.
Fuck all of them, especially Harold the Gutless Wonder who continues to employ him. Any owner with a shred of decency would have fired his sorry ass after that whining little bitch opened his mouth about losing in 2017.
FUCK. THEM. ALL.
And in the This Shit Isn't Going Away Department, Carlos Beltran had this to say in today's Daily Murdoch:

Stop the presses.
I've got to stop reading the sports pages:
"Joey Gallo entered the game with 11 strikeouts in 27 plate appearances, but hit two balls hard on Saturday...“I feel like he’s real close,’’ Boone said."
DickAllen - What might really annoy you even more is if the 2022 team does really well this season, with Cushman and Chal being YESSED-UP as the true heros of the campaign
I think this trade was a mistake, maybe a fairly big one. But that's all I expect from Cashman, who, like Boone, is an idiot.
Agreed, Duque. I know it's the old curmudgeon in me, but frankly I find all of basketball today to be like watching a playground, pick-up game.
UNC-Duke last night was certainly entertaining. But I couldn't help thinking that the great UNC team of 40 years ago—which BARELY won the title over Georgetown—would have shredded these guys.
And since when has that been the case in basketball? Did anyone think, in 1982, 'Huh, some 1942 team would have taken these guys apart'?
No, they did not.
Go, Huskies.
And hey, I for one am happy to see the Yanks pick up veteran ex-Met Alex Trevino, who has been a useful back-up for many years.
Wait, what? It's Jose Trevino? Never mind.
I agree with JM. This was a dumb trade. It was also an unnecessary trade, one made because our GM brought in a .169-hittin catcher who we could tell just from his pictures was going to be injury-ridden.
Sure, Abreu hasn't shown much so far, but he has been highly rated in the past, and impressive this spring. It's much more likely that he will string together a few valuable, middle-relief seasons than Jose Trevino will do anything much for us behind the plate.
But hey, not to worry. Cashman drafted catchers Jamie Lynn Seigler and Josh Breaux with his first two picks in 2018, and they should be just about ready to break out in the majors.
Right?
Trevino hits .230 last year, he could be the best hitting catcher they've had since Posada. Plus he's an excellent pitch framer, not as good as Chris Stewart, but a good one.
Well, let's hope. But hey, Early Sanchez was the best-hitting catcher the Yanks had since Posada. Mid-to-lately Sanchez...not so much.
My guess is they will trade Gil for a back-up catcher and a pitcher recovering TJ surgery after this game
A good friend of mine thought we might be able to trade with the A’s for another pitcher.
“Padres bolster rotation depth by acquiring Manaea from A's”
I guess The Intern doesn’t work on Sundays unless he gets offered a huge contract to take on. That seems to be the only thing that gets him out of bed after a rough week combing the thrift stores.
And Bully Beane is loading up for 2025.
And we trade with the Mets for an f-ing COMMIE.
Castro a Yankee?
What is the world coming too.
?
Next thing you know somebody will suggest watching girl's basketball when you don't have a blood relative in the game.
[I know, I know we had a Castro back when the Yankee brand meant something.]
Yes to all, especially Dick Allen.
And let me say one thing - if you really really really buy into any hope for this season, you're going to be crushed. Have you all not learned yet that the Yankee organization cares less about hope than a crackhead does about mental health?
Go huff some glue if you want hope for these Yankees. They are doomed and, by extension, so are we.
13 BIT - exactly - :)
Fuck, Horace at least be grateful it wasn’t LEE Trevino.
Yes, the Yankees are doomed like a kid getting broken toys at Christmas.
But this place, meaning all of you, will sustain me in my grief. We will sit shiva together all year and drink ourselves into a happy state of imbecility.
I am eagerly looking forward to it. Let the games begin.
I'm with you. The pirate ship has set sail and Duque is at the tiller.
Indeed, Dick Allen! The games alone will be a relief. And, of course, another excuse for venting our rage, scorn, and ceaseless contempt.
Banuelos not on the forty man roster. Always a problem for Genius Cashman. Abreu traded for the framer Trevino.
