Goodbye Cruel World, It's Opening Day

The gods place bets with loaded dice,
And all our earthly dreams betray,
But listen to one clown's advice,
Goodbye, cruel world; it’s opening day.

The politicians scrounge for power,
With consequences we shall pay.
But somewhere, it's our finest hour,
Goodbye, cruel world; it's opening day.

Our weary age is full of war,
The daily news brings dark dismay,
So surf the dreams worth living for,
Goodbye, cruel world; it’s opening day.

Ah... NOW it's Opening Day.

Today's starting line-up:

DJ LeMahieu, 2B
Aaron Judge, CF
Anthony Rizzo, 1B
Giancarlo Stanton, RF
Josh Donaldson, 3B
Gleyber Torres, DH
Oswaldo Cabrera, LF
Jose Trevino, C
Anthony Volpe, SS

Hicks on the bench!

Cabrera better not be wearing #95. Time to grow up, get serious. He's a big league ballplayer, not a defensive tackle.

BTR999 said...

Let’s have patience with Volpe and all the young players this year

- Derek Jeter had an 89 wRC+ in his first 383 PAs
- Jorge Posada had a 96 wRC+ in his first 239 PAs
- Robinson Cano had a 90 wRC+ in his first 170 PAs
- Aaron Judge had a 94 wRC+ in his first 153 PAs

I am one sorry-ass old man.

It's opening day as I approach my 69th birthday, and in reading an ESPN puff piece on Anthony Volpe, the fanboy in me comes alive. But for some unknown reason (probably due to all the Jeter references), this morning I've got tears in my eyes - it's pathetic.

Opening day always manages to reach down into my gut and return me to the emotional state of a ten-year-old, even after so many years of disappointment and rage.

Dare I hope? And for what?

BTR999 said...

There’s always room for hope, Dick.

When a bitter old cynic like me says it’s true, it’s true.

BernBabyBern said...

I'm not sure why, but I always miss Bob Sheppard a little bit more on Opening Day.

BernBabyBern said...

Get ready, everyone ...

The Franchy Cordero in Yankees history is about to begin.

BTR999 said...

Per Hoch, Goodman on Twitter:

“…The #Yankees have a “potential deal” that’s in the works where they would be adding a pitcher, Aaron Boone says.

That’s why they’re running with seven guys in their bullpen to start the year with the off day tomorrow.”

A rare burst of truth from Boone, or more gaslighting?

BernBabyBern said...

Uh, that's the "Franchy Cordero Era"

Game hasn't even started yet, and I've already made my first error.

BTR999 said...

May I just say this, from the bottom of my heart and in upmost sincerity:

LETS FUCKING GO!!!

BernBabyBern said...

Well, if you were looking for a good omen to start the season, that four-pitch walk wasn't it.

BernBabyBern said...

I'd like to revise my Aaron Judge HR prediction.

I now predict 162.

BTR999 said...

Judge

Doug K. said...

:)

BTR999 said...

Good to see Stanton and Donaldson already in mid-season form.

JM said...

You can feel the breeze down in the East Village, BTR.

ranger_lp said...

Cole is on today…until he isn’t…

BernBabyBern said...

Aaron Boone already rehearsing his "You know, he had some good swings, that was encouraging" post-game Donaldson quotes.

JM said...

Trevino takes three strikes right over the plate without swinging.

Doug K. said...

Question: Do any of you have Opening Day traditions?

I watch the game with a photo of my Dad and a small Joe DiMaggio action figure (His favorite ballplayer.)

BTR999 said...

My main tradition is hiding the game on my computer from my boss.

BernBabyBern said...

Any traditions? Not really, except I won't miss the first pitch. It's the one game I won't join in late. Even if I'm working, I find a way to get near a TV for the first pitch.

JM said...

I'm traditionless.

Gleyber!!!

Joe of AZ said...

I see Webb being helped by some bullshit strike calls

JM said...

Gleyber day!

JM said...

I noticed that, too, Joe.

Joe of AZ said...

GLEYBER DAY INDEED JM

BernBabyBern said...

Cole got his hands on some of that Spider-Tack stuff again, it appears.

BernBabyBern said...

Six shutout innings for Cole.

Now turn it over to Nelson, Stanton and Rivera and we're good.

Oops, wrong era. Sorry.

JM said...

If only.

JM said...

I still say this ump sucks. My first try at saying that was erased.

Doug K. said...

I got a bad feeling about the pen.

JM said...

Me too

BernBabyBern said...

JM, I think a couple of umps must have stock in the company that makes those roboumps, and are intentionally making horrible calls to speed up their implementation.

This guy falls into that category. Pretty bad.

TheWinWarblist said...

Opening day!!! Months of heartbreak!!!

BTR999 said...

Yeah, the ump had a wide SZ, for both teams
Yankees have struck out 12 times! Trevino and DJL both look half asleep

HoraceClarke66 said...

Ahhh! So good to be back in it—and there is no finer company.

My 57th Opening Day. First one, Mel Stottlemyre shut out the Washington Senators, 8-0. The team finished 9th that year.

To echo 999: LET'S FUCKING GO!

ranger_lp said...

From an article:

With three starting pitchers beginning the season on the IL, Aaron Boone told reporters on Thursday before Opening Day that the team is in talks with a free agent pitcher, and could be added before Friday’s game.

Given the injuries to the rotation, the pitcher could be a starter to help eat up innings before Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino are cleared to return. As Jay Jaffe of FanGraphs notes, Chris Archer, Mike Minor, Dallas Keuchel, and Michael Pineda are a few notable unsigned starting pitchers.

JM said...

Ooh, Pineda. How lucky could we be? 🤢

Any worries about announcers not having enough time to talk about anything have been put to rest today. Kay, the mayor... worthless blather survives completely intact. Especially with Kay. ZZZZ.

Carl J. Weitz said...

@ Doug and BTR: My Opening Day ritual since they started the season in late March over the last 20 years or so has morphed into frequently drinking myself into oblivion by imbibing hard alcohol and very nice red wine and eating birthday cake followed by Pepto Bismol.

BernBabyBern said...

Michael Pineda?

What, is Ed Whitson busy?

HoraceClarke66 said...

Would've been nice if Volpe had picked up that ribbie in the 7th. But probably more important that DJ did.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Love getting breaks like that broken bat. Good to see the juju gods love us. Before they kill us.

JM said...

This game has slowed down quite a bit. Still, should be under three hours easy.

JM said...

Kay is unbearable.

Speaking of the Yankees' illustrious history, who was it here who said it's only illustrious from 1920-65? We only have a handful of rings in the past 57 years. That's about half of all the history there is. The whole 27 championships is kinda bullshit as usually presented. It's like 20 the first 60 years and 7 the last 60. Nothing special.

ranger_lp said...

Second coming of Ted Abernathy pitching…

Doug K. said...

That pitch to Cabera was six inches off the plate!!

Joe of AZ said...

The "I wanna go home" strike call

ranger_lp said...

Yankees Win!!!

JM said...

Perfect record

BernBabyBern said...

Thuuuuuuuuuuuuh Yankees win!

JM said...

Marinara looked good.

BernBabyBern said...

162-0, baby!

ZacharyA said...

That was fun.

A little surprised they let Marinaccio air it out for 39 pitches on Opening Day. Guess he's a multi-inning reliever now.

BTR999 said...

#1 in the books, and it was surprisingly easy!

Hinkey Haines said...

The first win warble of the year is always the sweetest.

BernBabyBern said...

So wait, JM, we have a Lasagna-Marinara bullpen connection now?

HoraceClarke66 said...

Thairo the Pharaoh with the last out. Didn't walk like an Egyptian. Good game, though. And I still have 10,000 of those pharaonic headdresses in a Bronx warehouse...

HoraceClarke66 said...

Steve Gelbs saying on the Mets' pre-game that, "You see all the time in sports, that teams need to experience failure before they can win."

Which means the Mets must be primed to win. I mean, really, really, really primed to win.

Hinkey Haines said...

The Yankees website shows them with a "z" next to their name, meaning they've clinched the best record in the league. Maybe they know something we don't, and it's time to double the bet...

Hinkey Haines said...

You know what was really good to see? Cole only gave up one flyball, if the box score is correct. That's a great way to cut down on giving up dingers.

The Archangel said...

No free agent pitcher will do the Yanks any good unless it was someone who was cut after ST.
We can't touch anyone who sat all winter unless CASSman want him for the 2nd half. You know, Montas 2.0

Celerino Sanchez said...

Rocky Marciano for the knockout!

This was a big Yankee win.

Every win is a big Yankee win.

We're on vacation in St. Thomas. Missed the game, but I was getting updates by text from NY and MLB gamecast.

TheWinWarblist said...

32 strikeouts, 16 per team. But only one for Stanton.
