Another bad contract by Cashman. Tommy is a wonderful teammate and fun, but he has missed almost the last 3 seasons due to injury.
This setback is not good and will likely foreshadow 2 seasons of injury and rehab. All money wasted.
Again, had Cashman not made bad trades in the past 2 seasons, we would not have had to waste money on Kahlne and would have several 20- something pitchers available instead, who now toil elsewhere on minimum salaries.
You know, perhaps 1 or 2 more Ron Marinaccios, pitching for us.

I think all of Cash-hole's moves have to analyzed from two points of view, which are definitely not intersecting most of the time with this Yankee club. (1) the baseball GM point of view and (2) the financial (HAL) point of view.

As is usual with Cashman, the baseball decision to bring back Kahnle was dumb, dumb, dumb. Hopelessly dumb. Astonishingly dumb. Mind-numbingly dumb.

From the financial side of it, why the hell not? HAL unleashed a little bit of cash. They obviously don't spend any money on scouts. Why not bring back the devil they know as opposed to the devil they don't know? Good PR, too. Tommy "tightpants" Kahnle back to complete unfinished business here. And if he gets hurt again and flushes the whole season? Why, that's no big deal, the club has spent money as per the orders of HAL's accounting crew, and plus I'm sure they even took out insurance on his contract. (They wanted to blow some more money for business expenses, to use as a writeoff on tax returns, so they take out insurance on these contracts. Risk Management, ABC.) If he's healthy, they know what they're getting: a 100mph fireballer who is erratic and unpredictable, so it practically guarantees that he'll never get it done when the big moments come. (This assumes that they don't want to win, which is a fair assumption given that they seem to sabotage every season in every way possible that you can think of.) From the financial side, it was a WIN WIN signing!

When Cashman signs or trades for a player, does he insist that team doctors give them physicals and look at past medical records? WTF??? This is hardly an isolated incident as we all know. Don't they have specialists on call or do they cut corners there as well? Their lead doctor must be Dr. Bombay from Bewitched. This Bloated Front Office is the most incompetent in all of baseball.

Which brings me back to the Bader acquisition.

From the baseball viewpoint, the Montgomery for Bader deal was extra-ordinarily stupid, as we all agreed here.

From the finance (HAL) view, it was a classic in penny pinching, nickel & dime bullshit, Yankee style.

Think about it: Because they brought in Bader, they likely saved 40 to 50 Million when signing Judge. How's that? Because if they had not brought in Bader, Judge's agent likely argues that Judge is the CF on this team, and should get paid even more. It would've been a negotiating leverage that Judge would've used to his advantage during contract talks. Instead, Cheapskate HAL was able to poo-poo that with the argument that "we have Bader, the best defensive CF in the game, and our starting CF in 2023". Whether Judge's agent buys it or not, it still eats into their bargaining position.

That's likely one of the reasons that HAL rewarded Cashman with the extension on Cashman's contract. He saved the club money, or potentially saved the club money. (At that time, the Judge deal wasn't done, but the Bader deal put the team in better bargaining position.)

They really don't give a flying rat's ass whether Bader is healthy enough to play CF or not. His acquisition was merely a bargaining chip to save the club money on Judge's deal. They way it went down, the Bader deal has ALREADY been a financial WIN WIN WIN!

Weitz, I think it's likely that, when they decide they want a player, since it's almost always a financial decision, and NOT a baseball decision, they really couldn't care less whether that player is healthy or not. On paper, yes, I've heard they do physicals. But it's very easy to find a doctor who'll say "A-1 condition", even if a guy's arm is about to fall off.

And I do think that it is very likely that they pinch pennies on doctors and specialists. They are apparently pinching pennies on scouts, coaches, everything else, so why not also on doctors?

But these doctors they hire are clearly working on HAL's orders to rubber stamp any contracts they want. Since finance is dictating their player acquisitions, these doctors know what to put in their reports. Even when a guy (Montas) clearly needs shoulder surgery, they're going to write "A-1" condition.

There was simply no rationale whatsoever for signing Kahnle. 2 Years at nearly 6M per? For someone who threw all of 13 innings over the last 3 years? There were plenty of cheaper/healthier/better relievers available this winter. This is all on Cashman. I’ve asked it 1000 times, but how in the actual fuck does this incompetent, arrogant ignoramus still have a job?

@ Above Average....the excitement was that Branford's State Rep , Robin Comey, smashed into a parked car on Capitol Avenue in Hartford right after a legislative session because she was enjoying some martinis with Alphonso.
Her car flipped over on to it's roof. Several months previously, she fell down in the state house which she blamed on stress, anxiety and having wine at dinner.

@ Hammer... Yes, It's like in 2008 when the banks passed off their toxic mortgages to innocent investors as financial derivatives that were rated AAA by the well-known companies whose expertise these investors relied on. And then we find out that these rating agencies were wholly owned by the very banks that were pushing these worthless mortgages.

@Carl J. Weitz, And I betcha HAL uses those doctor's reports to get those contracts insured. When a guy goes down, they put in a claim with Dr. Boombatz's opinion that the player was A-1 when they traded for him. And now he's hurt, so the insurance will cover it.

It's all starting to make sense now. I used to think that it was all stupidity, clueless Cashman making dumbass moves. And I'm sure that he is stupid as far as real GM decision making, but he is a devious Machiavellian clown doing HAL's dirty work when it comes to the financial stuff. I don't think these guys are stupid, as far as the finances are concerned. That Bader move at last year's trade deadline was downright Machiavellian.
