Game Thread: Yankees vs. Reds

Montas returns with a 4.51 ERA

I wonder who will catch him?

Actually his ERA isn't 4.51 it's 4.23 but that's pretty close.

Here's the thing, we traded a bunch of guys to the A's for Frankie Montas. Some of whom would come in handy right about now.

To say it did not work out is an understatement.

Not only was he hurt pretty much for the entire time but the Yankees paid him an extra 7.5 Million dollars to keep him for another year even though he was hurt, and they let him rehab on their dime.

Then he goes and signs with the Reds.

I know we were OK with him leaving but he's their starting pitcher tonight and he'd better really suck.

He's not pitching until Thursday. Sorry about that. :)

Check out a Yankees NY Post story on their website. It’s compares the 51 hottest games from Ruth’s ‘27 season and Judge’s last 51 games

I used to say, why is Santana still on this team? Now I say, why is Ferguson still on this team?

It's truly disgraceful that HAL and The Brain have put this little around him. They should be catching shit for this constantly in the press.

Instead, they won't even commit to signing Soto.

I'm not convinced Soto is worth anywhere near what Boars will ask. He's good, yes, but he's not Judge-level good, and not worth anything close to what Judge makes. Walks a lot, fine. 30-40 home runs, good. Maybe hits close to .300, very nice. But 40 or 50 million a year? Not in my opinion. Defense not close to Judge, either.

So sue me. I just don't think so at this point in time.

JM, I generally agree with your analysis. But I just don't think that pro sports salaries work that way.

When Reggie Jackson came over to the Yankees, a lot of his new teammates were outraged by the money he was getting, and they cited all kinds of stats about many of them hit for a higher average, struck out less, etc.

In part, they were mismeasuring the game—as everyone did then.

But also, he just benefited from being in the right place at the right time. He was a free agent, just when he was the key piece needed to take the Yankees over the top...

...It's not the same situation with Soto, but it's similar.

If the GM of the Yankees were some canny mastermind who was all set up to take the money that would go to Soto and use it to build a dynasty—or at least bring in 3-4 first-rate players—I'd be all for it.

But that won't happen. All the money saved will simply go into the vaults of Hal "Unsustainable" Steinbrenner.

Given that choice, I would much rather see Soto stay, for his entertainment value and to at least retain the wild hope that perhaps he and Judge can one day wrangle us a ring.

That's never going to happen with whatever sadly mangled graduate of our farm system, or dumpster-diving prize Brian Cashman puts in his place.

Also: Fahrenheit 451, the movie?

Also: Soto's extreme young age gives him a huge advantage. One almost never sees a free agent this young and this good. He's worth the speculation that he could get even better.

What Horace said. In 7 years Judge will be 39 and in the last year of his contract. They could go 14 years for Soto and he would be the same age as Judge would be in the last of his. 14 at 40 per year would be a nod to Judge as well as the highest real time value contract ever. Don't know if Boras or Soto would go for it, but I would probably offer it today if I were in Cashman's office. Maybe start at 12/480 with some kind of option for years 13, 14, and/or 15.

For Soto's money The Brain should be able to put together three really good infielders and possibly a couple of bullpen lugnets. I can't recall a top heavy team ever winning a World Series. Anybody? Of course putting The Brain next to "should" is a big fucking "if". The Brain has made his money, put together a lot of good teams, but clearly he's lacking "something". Maybe he gets quiet "bonus money" by coming under a certain number when figuring in all of a MLB team's expenses.
