Heading deep into May, the Yankees are a team in transition

Unless something barks - a corpuscle, a carbunkle, a clickittyclack, whatever - DJ LeMahieu will return tonight in Seattle, facing a big RH with an ERA north of 5.00 by the white bread bigwig, constitutional scholar name of Emerson Hancock.

DJ will be back for a 1) tryout, 2)  peek, 3 looksee, 4, gender reveal, 5) all of the above. Let's hope whatever deal he brokered with Mephistopheles, it lasts four to eight weeks, coinciding with Satan's contract for Jazz Chisholm's ribcage.

The Yankees - tied with Cleveland with the 2nd best record in the AL - are a team in FOR BETTER OR WORSE FLUX.

Consider...

1. For better or worse, LeMahieu is back. Don't drop the balloons. Don't roll the credits. The Conclave is not over, no white smoke wafting from Boone's porno office. Next month, DJ turns 37, the age of liver spots and skin tags. Last year, he tanked: .204 with 2 HRs. Still, his career BA stands at .289, and he rightfully deserves a decent drink of water, especially when Jorbit Vivas has an option remaining and Pablo Reyes remains on the roster.

The less we expect, the better DJ looks. Thanks to Chisholm's snarling oblique, we have an easy insertion point: 2B. It's DJ's best position, we need a RH bat, Jazz is gone, and nobody stepped forward to claim the opening. (Oswald Peraza's HR might have bought him another month of Yankihood.) Just close your eyes and remember 2020: (He hit ..364.) Let LeMahieu play, until he proves he cannot. When Jazz returns, we can ponder DJ at 3B. For now, let him bat 9th. Let him draw walks, move runners and force pitch counts.

Mr. LeMahieu, sir: We owe you a shot. Here it is.

2. For better or worse, Stanton is coming. He's 35 and - love him or hate him - he's still fresh from last October, when he was the best hitter anywhere not named Freddie Freeman. One problem, though: He couldn't run.

It hasn't yet been settled that his horrible mobility has improved. His elbows might be okay, but what about the stems?

If Stanton cannot run, he becomes the biggest base path liability in all of baseball. He will be constantly thrown out. Still, the Yankees have no option, aside from putting him in and seeing what happens.

We love Ben Rice - his grand slam yesterday adds to his mom's scrapbook - but there is no platoon for him, unless Kent Tekulve comes out of retirement and joins an opposing rotation. When Stanton arrives, Rice will sorta disappear.

3. For better or worse, the Yankees will stick with Devin Williams. Let's not sugarcoat this. The bullpen is in DEFCON 4. Whenever the Yankees lose, it's always the same: a winnable game, blown in the late innings by an exploded bullpen. The Yankees have tried Williams in several roles. None has worked. He does not seem to be improving.

But at least for now, the Yankees have no option beyond Williams. Over the last two years, he was one of baseball's best relievers. This year, cannon fodder. (But keep in mind, Caleb Durbin - whom we traded - is hitting .203 with 1 HR. And Nestor Cortes remains on the injured list, 1-1 with an ERA of 9.00.) At some point, maybe July or August, some young fireballer will emerge from the farm system. (It's like Hollywood IT Girls: There's always one on the horizon.)  Until then, it's Williams. Deal with it.

In a few weeks, Jonathan Loaisiga might return. (There is no guarantee here, and Loaisiga's history is full of injuries and setbacks.) He could be a huge boost. Or not. Maybe we're just stuck in flux.

Speaking of setbacks, how about that Sevvy? What a character. Sevvy, AnDUjar, Sears, Gio...can we send them Volpe?

So Stroman has become our new Setback Player of the Month. No 2026 option boom boom for this baby. He'll never make the number of innings. (Will Cashman sign him for another year, anyway? Even the Brain isn't that stupid.)

And Will Warren. Or is it Wil? Worth keeping and maybe he develops? Sometimes he looks pretty good. Sometimes. Yarbrough (bro!)...yeah, I don't think so.

Stanton should just chill out until September, then get in some games to knock the rust off, and go into the playoffs where he shines. If we get that far. After all, Cashman is still the GM and Boone is still the Anti-manager. And an idiot.

DJ shoulda retired by now, but OK, one more shot. If Boone can't knock us out of first, DJ won't, either.

Hey, did you notice that the Mets and the Tigers are tied for the best record in MLB? Clay and Soto on one, Gleyber on the other. Not that that means anything. Just a coincidence. Really.

Everything matters - until it doesn't...

Or maybe not.

But time will tell...

Or maybe not.

Well, at least we're 100% about time curing all wounds...

Or . . . maybe not that either....

I SMELL COFFEE... !

I think the Stanton/Rice conundrum will fix itself. Analytics proscribes, if not demands, copious rest days for most players over 30. Stanton will not be a full time player upon his return. When not DH-ing, Rice will get increased time at 1B, as Goldy will need more rest. I’m wondering if Rice will also see time at C, as the former Uber driver, Escarra , can drive himself back to Scranton. It’s not hard to see Rice playing 4 or 5 games a week under this scenario. Finally, injuries will clear this murky situation up. Stanton will miss several more weeks, catchers are always susceptible to injury. I’m not saying any of this ideal, but with the AL lacking a dominant team, it could definitely be enough.

I think you're right, 999. Can't picture Cantrun lasting more than a couple weeks before the next injury. I suspect that he is actually very near to the end of his career.

As for the bullpen, yeah, it's gonna get ugly. The rule should be simply: close game, use your best relievers (bad as they are), even if it means using them two or even (gasp) three games in a row. Period. Blowout? Throw in the trash. This isn't rocket science.

DJ and Stanton are not the faces of victory. They are logs stuck in the flume, turds clogging the toilet, styrofoam in the driveway and you have no broom. Forget any numbers - they are not Yankee winners. They are placeholders and they are going to be anvils around our scrotums until they leave the team.

That anvil is made of styrofoam right?

We also need to make room in the “Setback Lounge” for Marcus Stroman, who is not yet ready for prime time.

I noticed that the Rockies lost 21-0 (looks a lot like a Giants game, doesn't it?). After the game, Bud Black was given a vote of confidence, then fired the next day.

Some things will never change. Even losing 21-0 wouldn’t get Boooooone fired. Not even a little bit.

And happy 100th birthday to Yogi Berra

JM, how drunk were you when you typed that? I'm guessing most of the way through a ketel one handle.

The best catcher ever. Fuck you to anyone who says bench is.

Glassman and Goldsm..... are both righys. Rice *should* get reps, but the again, no Martian tonight. Boone is a idiot.
