Today, for the first time, the Yankee rotation features Gerrit Cole and Max Fried. Is the Singularity upon us?

I was starting to think that I would never see...

1. A poem as lovely as a tree.

2. Madonna as an opener for Justin Beiber.

3. Measles back atop the U.S.A. medical charts.

4. Gerrit Cole and Max Fried pitch for the Yankees on the same day.

This we know: God is a nut job.

Never doubt the universe, when it comes to chaos and crapola, the two pillars of American culture. Always be a Beleiber. Yes, you can imagine the Muppets playing "Seven Nation Army" in an open-air stadium, but it's not crazy enough unless you add an orchestra of violins. Odysseus might take 10 years to get home to Ithaca, but you damn well better believe he'll make it in time for the Cortica Jug Game against Cortland State.

Getting back to Cole-Fried, (which sounds suspiciously like a dead bill before Congress):  I never saw this happening. The two pitchers were like moons circling Pluto - you'd never see them on the same day. Together, they represent $50 million in Yankee payroll this season - $134 million through 2028, when the money kicks in on Fried's contract.

When you factor in the notion that 2027 could be a labor lockout, who knows? This could be it! This could be the Yankee Rotation Singularity - Cole and Fried, together at last, blowing up the Yankiverse, as bookends in a doubleheader.

Soon, Carlos Rodon could join them (though his lingering elbow issues are troubling) - and then Clarke Schmidt. The infusion of veteran arms would offset the lack of a breakout Yankee farm hand - no Cam Schlittler down the stretch. What we see is what we got.

For now, all eyes are on the Aug. 3 trade deadline, when King Cashman will try to pry loose a decent RH-hitting catcher from some second-tier tomato can.

After that, here are more impossibilities we will see...

1. The NY Football Giants will tear up that beautiful sod grass in the Meadowlands, laid down for the World Cup, so their team - the sixth most injured NFL roster last year - can play home games on a parking lot covered by a throw-rug. The soccer stars were too valuable to risk on artificial turf. Not the Giants, though. They'll play 15 games on the remodeled asphalt, tied with Tennessee for the most likely to be shredded. Cannon fodder, right?

2. Yankees will promote George Lombard Jr. A piece in today's Times - via The Athletic - all but demands the move. In it, Boone and Bellinger call Lombard everything but the most terrifying juju curse: "The Next Jeter." They say he's already a better glove than Volpe/Caballero. Hard to Beleibe, am I right? If that's true, what are they waiting for?

3. Jazz Chisholm should bat higher in the order. Why are they sticking him below Belli, Goldie and The Martian? The guy is facing an existential crisis: it's his contract year, and what he does over the next three months will dictate the fate of his family. The Yankees seem to be acting like he's an afterthought, that they're already moving on (as they did with Gleyber.)

I don't know Chisholm's future, but it seems to me that they could give him some rope and see what happens. Let him bat leadoff, or 2nd, or 3rd - see what happens. When it comes to Jazz, why not be a Beleiber?

Not sure why Grisham bats lead-off. Yeah, Chisolm would be a better option there.

"Odysseus might take 10 years to get home to Ithaca, but you damn well better believe he'll make it in time for the Cortica Jug Game against Cortland State". ...lol, as the kids used to say

I wonder if I will live to see another championship flag raised at Yankee Stadium. Will we become the 21st century Cubs or Red Sox. Will future generations speak of the Curse of Cashman?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Grisham is batting leadoff because he strikes out a lot and can't run the bases.

AboveAverage said...

No we will not.

Certainly the Curse of Cashman could be mentioned along will
Hal-Atrocious and Seedy McBubbles von Boone aka THE IDIOT.

Rufus has it all figured out !

(You know it has been decades since I’ve seen a firefly….)

Is George Lombard Jr really ready? I've hardly seen him play ... a few at-bats ... maybe one game. Certainly had bat speed. He hit a double, almost a homer.

They coulda played last night. NYC got maybe two tenths of an inch of rain. Although I heard the Bronx River Parkway was flooded during the day. Must've been a storm cell there. Didn't seem to be any rain after early evening.

The Hammer of God said...

Amongst Grisham, Wells, Goldschmidt, who would put up a faster time around the bases? It'd be close.

The Hammer of God said...

Is it just me or does Grisham seem to play the game at half speed? Is he "loafing" or is that really the fastest he can run without blowing a tire? There was an article the other day on yardbarker that Cashman might sign Grisham to another contract. Yeah, I'd say Grisham is definitely a Cashman type of player. Pretty much below mediocre in everything. Hits some home runs. Probably will pay him 130 mil over 7 years, maybe more.

I'm sure Fat Dracula on the Blue Jays would run circles around Grisham. How is that possible? How could a guy carrying a 50 lb spare tire be faster than skinny Grisham? Well, believe ... because we see it every day.

Cole, Fried, Schlittler, and just about anybody makes for an amazing rotation.

Prior to Game 1 of today’s doubleheader, the Yankees appointed OF Spencer Jones as their “27th Man.” He’s in lthe lineup, batting third, and ready to strike out twice.

I just tried to post today's game thread but the system is blocking me from doing so.

Apologies :(

I had the same problem this morning, AA. Thought it was just me.

Might be too many posts? Smth

or Blogger absolutely despises The Thing With Two Heads or American International Pictures or Samuel Z. Arkoff

JM said...

Or that.

JM said...

Wow, Cole covered first.

The Hammer of God said...

Spencer Jones hitting #3 today? Ba-Boone gets his lineup from the Yankee AI dept. Either that or he picks his lineup out of a hat.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

All of the above.

BTR999 said...

AA, the tentacles of the Yankees front office are long indeed…

The Hammer of God said...

Chisholm proving once again that he doesn't have a good eye for the strike zone. Only correct on 4 out of 17 challenges. Wow!

BTR999 said...

It has long been my contention that Boone does not create the lineups.

The Hammer of God said...

Maybe after Boone filled out his lineup card, #3 slot was empty. So he stuck in Spencer Jones.

The Hammer of God said...

@BTR999, Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt about it. He's getting his lineup from an email. Merely fills out the lineup card, like a robot.

BTR999 said...

That was a terrible half inning, with 3 lousy AB’s. But Chisolm’s was the worst. Runner in scoring position, didn’t protect the plate with 2 strikes, then burned a challenge.

I fully support moving him at the TD, but I’m pretty sure the Yankees won’t. In fact, I don’t think they’re going to be pretty active at all.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

of course i turn the game on just as...

BTR999 said...

And just like that…

The Hammer of God said...

There goes the ball game!

JM said...

Cole is a great four-inning pitcher.

The Hammer of God said...

+1

The Hammer of God said...

Cole seems to be the new whipping boy. When he pitches, they don't score runs. It was Ryan Weathers, but they finally scored some runs for him.

The Hammer of God said...

They just can't hit a guy with a 5 ERA.

The Hammer of God said...

The AI lineup decision with Spencer Jones #3 is not working too well, eh? Why the hell would you put a raw rookie into the #3 slot? Doesn't make any sense. That's Yankee management for ya.

The Hammer of God said...

Guess that's the conventional new fangled baseball wisdom of today. The #2 slot should be your best hitter. And you can put anyone in the #3. I can't stop laughing at this stupidity.

The Hammer of God said...

I get the feeling the ceiling is about to collapse....

BTR999 said...

Caballero is another jackass I’d like to see gone.

BTR999 said...

They should pull Cole.

Told ya.
