The article on Peterborough's top five athletes of all time was terrific.

However, anyone over the age of 60 knows you missed the greatest of them all.

At 5-feet 11-inches in height and 160 pounds, this player was considered too small to play pro hockey. Growing up, he did not have the advantage of artificial ice to play on. For him, it was only outdoor rinks and the canal.

Yet through sheer determination and hard work he not only made it to the NHL but attained the lofty position of captain of the New York Rangers.

During his tenure (1957-61) as captain of the Rangers, he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Joe Dimaggio, who was still hanging around New York after his career ended in 1951, and Mickey Mantle, who was at the peak of his career with the Yankees. That's not even mentioning other legends like Jack Dempsey, who had the hottest restaurant in town.

In short, George (Red) Sullivan was the greatest athlete Peterborough ever produced.
