The fact that I keep hearing "achilles" mentioned, makes me think his season is over. Always a bad sign...
Stanton won't be back until Labor Day, if he comes back at all
It's really almost better if Stanton never comes back, like Ellsbury. At least Ellsbury had the good sense not to come back right before the playoffs and torpedo a roster spot. Stanton comes back right before, plays one game, and then sits on the bench for the rest of that series. Utterly useless dead wood.
Benintendi, if healthy, would be an improvement over Gallo. But there were rumors of leg problems with him too. I wouldn't have done it. All we need is another guy with bad wheels.
It ain't perfect by a long shot. I'd still like to see Miggy, especially, up from Scranton purgatory. But it's something.
Benintendi has a career .259/.308/.352 (.660 OPS) batting line vs. current Astros pitchers.
And unfortunately most of his success comes against Jake Odorizzi, who I doubt we'll get to face in October.
Benintendi is 11-58 (.190) with 1 HR vs. Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, Lance McCullers Jr., Luis Garcia, and Cristian Javier.
@ZacharyA, Somehow I highly doubt that Cashman checked those numbers before making this deal. Or if he did, he probably said .190 with 1 HR is way better than what our current roster does against those guys.

Thanks for the stats. Apparently the front office engages in statistics based magical thinking as in Donaldson has never hit well in Yankee Stadium but that's OK. Or Benintendi (Thanks LBJ - that ben-intended works!) can hit the Astros but we think he will.

Still have all the pieces for a bigger trade. None of the three guys we traded will stop us from Soto or Castillo. Not saying Brain will do it.
Aside from being a Yankee killer (and really we needed an ASTRO killer - how hard is that for the front office to understand) my chief memory of Benintendi is a beautiful catch he made in Fenway against us where he caught the ball and then pirouetted to avoid smashing into the Green Monster. It was elegant and athletic.
He's a rental So I guess this is an audition. We definitely need bat on ball skills. We also definitely need Soto and Castillo.

Well, turns out the joke is on us. The Sox got his best years. We'll get the Beni who has mysteriously lost his stolen base ability and his power, can't hit against our main rivals, and isn't allowed to play in Canada.

I'm not over that 2019 ALCS, either. If Stanton had just gone on the DL when he felt too injured to play, we could have at least stuck another bat on the roster. What a twerp.
Maybe his injury will at least force Cashie to bring up Miggy or Estevan.

The numbers Zachary A. cites are too small a sample size to be significant. What's more important is Benintendi's overall performance. His power numbers are way down this year--only three homeruns and a meh OPS of .788--which makes one wonder if he will really be that much of an improvement over elevating Andujar and/or Florial, both of whom seem ticketed for Cashman's sadistic purgatory--unwilling to give them a legitimate shot with the big club but equally unwilling to emancipate them to another team lest they prove to be standouts and make Cashman look bad. It's really all about his ego, not the best interests of the players or the Yankees.
