With Doctor Aroldis and Mister Chapo, Yanks run into mighty O's buzz saw

Once again Saturday, we learned never to trust the corrupt and lying mainstream media.

According to the "experts," Baltimore is baseball's worst team, 50 games below .500, and going nowhere.

We know otherwise. The O's look solid at every position - with the "M&M&M boys" - Mullens, Mountcastle, Mateo, Mancini and McKenna  - ripping pitching staffs. And speaking of pitching - wow! - how about that Chris Ellis! The YES barkers claimed he was a scrap-heaped former Ray with a 6.24 ERA. Well, five no-hit innings, baby! The guy is Max Scherzer. Damn. We're lucky to have won a game.

That's right - damn lucky to have won Friday night, running our winning streak to two.

And thanks to our classic horror duo - Doctor Aroldis and Mister Chapo - we never know who will pitch the ninth.

It's looking like the Death Barge will need to beat Boston in that final September series. And if we make the one-game Wild Card, we know who Aaron Boone will send out in the ninth. We just don't know who will show up.

The Yankees are a fundamentally flawed, poorly managed team. They are fighting for a playoff spot and can't even take care of business against a AAAA team. The whole organization stinks.

Yesterday's game was wholly unsatisfying. That is all.

ZacharyA said...

Loaisiga to the IL with a strained right rotator cuff. Boone is unsure if he’ll pitch again this year. We all know he won’t.

Not that we had much hope for a playoff run this year, but now we can’t even pretend. Blow out the candles.

Booooone continues to throw the SweatHog out there hoping to roll back the years.

He’s playing Russian Roulette with the season and Chapman is his gun. You pull that trigger often enough and it’s eventually gonna get bloody.

The injuries/ineffectiveness of the relievers in 2021 is a result of years of overuse due to the philosophy of going cheap on starters. Why should we even WANT the Yankees to play Boston in a one game playoff? Sure, it'll be hyped as Cole vs Sale, but the reality is Cole vs the superior Red Sox line-up and Sale (backed up by Eovaldi) against a bad hitting team. We're facing an Old Yeller conundrum.

BTR999 said...

Best solution: Make Nestor Cortes the closer

HoraceClarke67 said...

Yeah, ZacharyA, I'm afraid you're right. Loaisiga's loss buries the last hope. And very good point, Melquiades: the going cheap on starters has just shifted the burden to an overused bullpen, with predictable results.

HoraceClarke67 said...

And the Joey Watch:

Despite that dramatic HR yesterday, Joey Gallo is STILL on track to compile the lowest BA ever by a Yankee 'regular,' hitting all of .138 right now.

And just to settle various disputes about Joey, King of the Whiff:

—Yes, he is leading the AL in walks, with 100.

—Yes, he is leading the AL in strikeouts, with 180.

—While he was with Texas, baseball reference had him with a 2.9 WAR as a hitter, and a 1.0 WAR as a fielder.

—As a Yankee, baseball reference has him with a -0.1 WAR as a hitter, and a 0.0 WAR as a fielder. His OBP as a Yank is just .296.

In other words, whether or not you believe in the "three true outcomes" brand of baseball, Joey Gallo has sucked and sucked mightily as a Yankee. He has been, in pinstripes, what Elvis Costello called "Less than zero." A-hey. A-hey-hey.

I sincerely hope he will do much better. I doubt if he will.

HoraceClarke67 said...

And yeah, let's keep our eyes on the ball:

The magic number is 4. In other words, we just need to go 4-23 from hereon in.

I believe that we can do it.

Rain in NYC...but it doesn't look like enough to cancel, which is too bad.

Yanks look unmotivated and distracted (again). I was hoping a couple days off might cure that.

(Actually, I think about a 7-year break would really be best, but that much rain would be bad.)

Odor gets hit on the hand and stays in. We know how those hand injuries can fester. It's a nasty way to get Wade back in the lineup, but I would take it.

Seems like the only way Boone can be stopped from fielding the least exciting and effective lineup possible is injuries. Ugly, but I'd take that, too.

Rooting for players to get hurt is mean and perverse, but if it's the only way to get the best lineups on the field, I'll take it.

ZacharyA said...

0.1 IP, 4 R is better than I expected from Heaney to be honest

Anonymous said...

Actually this game has it all. It's a clown car clusterfuck of the expected and unexpected. 2 HRs for Sanchez Giancarlo running for a ball and making a full out diving catch. Gleyber throwing nonchalantly leading to two runs. Mr. Haney being Mr. Haney (and they should DFA him right fucking now)worst pickup ever.

Doug K.

Carl J. Weitz said...

Again....why is Heaney still on the team? Will they finally DFA him?

el duque said...

To get Heaney, we gave up Janson Junk, 25, who made his MLB debut last night for the Angels. He pitched a scoreless inning.

Platoni said...

What a shitty lifeless team

Carl J. Weitz said...

I know Voit had a 5 game hot streak. But can that fucking guy just try to get a single for once? He swings at everything especially in the dirt yet takes too many called strike threes right down the middle.

ranger_lp said...

Stanton is probably getting tomorrow off...he looks exhausted...lol

Platoni said...

Well, Tampa lost but I ain't feeling any better. Anyone know why?

el duque said...

This is a LIVING HELL!

JM said...

I'm with Carl. Completely gone negative on Voit. I don't see why we need him anymore, even as a backup 1B. He swings for the fences every time he's up, which isn't worth all the outs.

So this series started a stretch of 20 days in a row with no break. And now we don't have Lasagna. And Kluber, as a starter, can only go three or four innings, and that's if he makes it that long.

So Cole is the only starter who seems able to go 6 or more innings on a consistent basis. That's a lot of bullpen innings. For 20 straight days.

No way. Unless Boone gets a lot more creative and uses Gil, Riddings, maybe Kroener. Might also need Nestor out there and go to a four-man rotation. You know, like teams did for 100 years or more.

ranger_lp said...

Getting prepared for another gut punch...

ZacharyA said...

From August 8 (when he came off the IL) to August 21, Voit hit .320/.370/.620.

Then Boone starting benching him for Rizzo and he cooled off.

Platoni said...

What pisses me off about Gallo is that they're gonna keep replaying that home run for days and keep slotting him second in the lineup

DickAllen said...

Boooooone creative?

If he doesn't get canned in the off season, I might start rooting for the Pirates. At least then I would become accustomed to having no hope. This alleged manager has to be the worst Yankees manager I can recall.

And actually using Heaney for anything except ball boy is criminal.

JM said...

Zach, I think Rizzo is a better first baseman and overall better, more consistent, contact hitter. I still don't think we need Voit, though I take your point.

JM said...

I'm going to make dinner and listen to the rest on radio.

Not a lot of hope. Once again, the pitching killed us. Funny how it was the hero for so long.

"A shitty lifeless team." This is the same team that was playing .500 ball before the spate of injuries forced them to inject some youth, speed, defense, and athleticism in the form of Allen, Wade, and Velazquez that shook them out of their funk. But at the earliest opportunity, they reinstated the .500 club. So what do you expect from such in irremediably stupid front office?

Celerino Sanchez said...

Dick Allen, how can you say it's not the pitching. You have one starter than can pitch more the 6 innings. You have Talion & Montgomery who haven't in 2 years, they aren't going to get better in September. You have Kluber, which is like having an STD. Then there is Mr. Haney no need to elaborate. Two kids they traded for E&J Gallo & Heaney have pitched better than half this staff. They've burnt out Johnny Lasagna, you never no what you will get from Mo Green. Chapman now knows how he's girlfriend feels when she gets whacked around. This is all on Cashman, he doesn't know anything about pitching and neither does BOOOOONE.

Carl J. Weitz said...

Okay...I understand the Yankees had a 3 run lead in the 7th and they needed arms and innings from the pen. But here is what I don't understand: Heaney might be the worst pitcher on the team and 2 of the first 3 batters and 3 of 5 batters in the O's lineup were right-handed. So why bring in Heaney to face them when trying to protect the lead. Why not bring in Abreu or Green at that point? Seriously, I'll never figure out why Boone manages the pen like he does and why he's so clueless about percentages and odds. And this from an organization that claims to rely so heavily on analytics.

I wish Boone, Cashman and Hal could all be wished into the cornfield. And I don't mean the Iowa/Field of Dreams cornfield. I mean the Billy Mumy cornfield.

DickAllen said...

Celerino, the pitching, for the most part this year, has been excellent - but, to your objection, the Yankees lead the world in one run games, but they also have blown more saves than a cheap hooker. But the pitching credentials have been well documented: the Yankees have the best team ERA in the AL!

Bringing Heaney into any game is, at best, detrimental, and we’ve seen Boooooone make stupid mistakes on a regular basis, sins of omission to commission.

My point was that Booooooone is killing what little excellence this team might be capable of.

Oasisdave said...

Well it looks the the real Yankees have returned. That 13 game trip to Fantasy Island was nice and all, but now I think we know what to really expect. Either we blew up the farm for nothing or or it's a one and done Wild Card play in game. Well either way we wasted farm talent.

Hate Boone, hate Cashman, Hals a piece of trash. Thank God football is here

Kevin said...

"The Billy Mumy cornfield". Carl, that's beautiful!

ZacharyA said...

It’s easy to blame the pitching after a bad game like this, but our arms aren’t to blame for this disappointing season.

543 runs allowed (1st in AL, 4th in MLB)
594 runs scored (11th in AL, 21st in MLB)

No fancy analytics or sabermetrics here. Just the raw data.

I’m skeptical about the rotation going forward as much as anyone. But the blame for this season is 90% on the lineup.

It FEELS like the pitching staff is a let down only because ALL our games are close since we can’t score runs consistently.

In reality, this is our best pitching staff in years.

ranger_lp said...

We've had no blowouts ZacharyA so I agree with that...

Leinstery said...

They are 9-7 against one of the worst teams ever assembled. Holy fuck.

HoraceClarke67 said...

First, neither Boone nor Coops are going anywhere. They already have their excuses: Covid, Covid, Covid, injuries, injuries, injuries. Hey, we'll get 'em next year.

At some point, when they can't hide how bad this team is anymore, Coops will throw Boone overboard, in 2022 or 2023. That will buy him a few more years.

HoraceClarke67 said...

As for Boone, the thing I would really like to know is this:

Did he "go ahead with the plan" and stick Heaney in, or has he so swallowed the Kool-Aid that he thought that was the best thing to do?

I really would like to know. Because at this point, I don't see how he CAN'T stand up against Coops on a matter this small.

I mean, why couldn't he say—particularly after a win—'Yeah, I had Heaney warming, but because of who they had coming up I decided to go with _____".

Even Coops isn't going to fire him for that.

So which is it? Is Boone THAT much of a sock puppet, or has he been hyp-mo-tized, as Letterman used to say?

HoraceClarke67 said...

And I agree with ZacharyA: Keep playing the hot hand, particularly when you're in a tight race in Sept. It's not like it was Derek Jeter getting off the DL to replace Velazquez, for cryin' out loud. It was freakin' Gleyber Torres, for cryin' out loud, a guy who gives you absolutely nothing.

And while I agree with JM that, overall, Rizzo is a much better player than Voit, in this situation he:

—Squandered any trust we had in him by refusing to get vaxxed and getting Covid.

—Was clearly not physically ready to come back after bout with said Covid....

HoraceClarke67 said...

...And speaking of which, the Voit/Rizzo competition is why the Yanks are so done for years to come now.

This is their choice at first now:

Re-sign Rizzo? Obviously the better all-around player, but already 31 and in clear decline, and who knows what health problems he now has from his Covid bout.

OR

Go with Voit? A real gamer, but perennially injured, and a limited player.

The choice is BLECCHH! The choice is, 'Bring up that great young first baseman we've been carefully cultivating in the minors for the last three years. Oh, wait.'

The choice is bad, anyway you look at it.

Kevin said...

Torres and his piss-poor game is back. I pray that we can find a sucker for him after the season. I can't recall a Yankee team whose reality is so far removed from it's reputation. This roster on paper is pretty damned good, even the starting pitching held some hope. That being said, as maddening the offense and defense has played, most/all of us has known from the beginning what was in store. Once again ownership tried to skimp on starting pitching. The same story which we've seen (2009 being the exception) for the past twenty years. Blame this totally on Hal.Based on the stats #1-2 pitching is rich in price, but a brutal game of risk. And a point that must be restated, the organization, perhaps because of a Faustian bargain can't draft and develop starters. I'm no longer sure that we can develop ANY pitching. Yeah, we find some pitchers who seem as though the organization has woven a silk purse from a show's ear. But this may be a delusion, we rarely get more than a year and a half before something explodes. I have to wonder if this is mere coincidence. IMHO, until the perfect storm of minor league pitching and up the middle talent hit the beaches together (and no small fan revolt) we are doomed to watch variations of this season. For some years. I hope that Judge is part of it. Something tells me that Hal will miss out by "this much" when Judge becomes a free agent. Have we become the California Angels, having a few marquee players to keep the casual fans in eternal optimism? I'm not trying to denigrate the Angels, ownership has sure as hell poured the money out... Well, this team is no hobby for old men.

Kevin said...

Horace, Rizzo for 3-4 years wouldn't be the worst thing. He stabilizes the infield, has a good lefty bat who understands the situation, and he looks as though baseball is a great way to make a living. Voit has had surgeries which likely become scar-tissue nightmares. Plus he's got the range of a Cliff Johnson. We should trade him and run. Maybe a package with Torres. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Kevin said...

Joe Torre knew that come crunch time you ride the hot hand. Joe retired with four rings as a manager and it wasn't only because he had some nice teams. Boooone may very well have taken that same team and "missed it by about this much". Boooone likes making what amounts to a lot of found money, and will do as he's told. Which, I believe, is fine by him. If he had to be Billy Martin, or even Joe he'd quit.

same question I've been asking myself. Does Gil smell bad? Is that why he's not playing in MLB? Is his father a communist? Is his mother a hamster?

Question 2: How many other teams would have this guy in the minors, and Kluber and Heaney trying to contribute beyond their capabilities? Wouldn't you at least give the guy a chance to pitch himself out of the majors?

Question 3 is a doozy. I ask myself for how long I can extend my childhood fandom for the NYYs under Hal/Cashman/Boone conditions.....

HoraceClarke67 said...

Archie, good point. But again—much like Rizzo will probably be—DJ was a no-choice choice.

Sure, looking at his age and overall history, the smarter choice—THEORETICALLY—would have been to let him move on and either promoted some brilliant young kid from the minors or brought in a terrific replacement in some brilliant trade.

But with Coops, no could do.

The farm system was a wreck—as usual.

The possibility of this baseball no-nothing and braggart pulling off a great trade was nonexistent—as usual.

This is our future.
