A long time ago, yet still in 2022, the yankees had a fearsome team.
We added Matt Carpenter as a short term hero.
Luis Severino had a starting slot.
And Chapman was effective.
Stanton hit along with Judge, until he, well...you know.
Then the trade deadline came, and Cashman bungled every move.
People will laugh for ever at the Montgomery give away.
And Donaldson began to show his age and hands.
The gold glove third baseman suddenly showed why he excelled at third instead of shortstop.
And another major traded for chip ( Gleyber Torres ) faded into the woodwork.
Injuries piled on this team like a train wreck. Rizzo made everyone better, His absence made everyone worse. Michael King just went away. Everyone went on the 10 day IL. And some guy in a boot is limping around St. Louis.
I need go no further, because today is here.
There is no one who seriously believes our line-up today can beat Tampa.
It isn't the same yankee team. It is the one we have. It has rookies in it, finally, but far too late to matter.
Infamy beckons.
Watch the faces closely as it dawns upon the players.
It is going to be memorable.

When we caught the Sox in 78, it was a situation where a good team was beaten by a better team. This year, this team will get caught by a team that 75% of the fans don't know more than 5 players of the team. TB has been winning with consistency for the last 6-7 years, yet they still come up guys in the draft that a key contributors. How about offering their scouts a blank check to come work for us?
Very true, Celerino. Almost the whole DIVISION in 1978 was incredible.
AND, the Red Sox went just 15-16 from Sept. 1 on, but were 19-10 in August. They did NOT completely fall apart...we just beat them. Seven out of eight, including the playoff.
The Yankees that year got off to a stumbling start in good part to devastating injuries. The Sox had a lot of injuries in the second half, though not as bad. But in any case, both teams were full of superstars, and played like hell, right to the end. (Red Sox had 4 HOFers, and several near misses. Yanks had 3, and deserved another (Guidry). Also Lemon, the manager.
This race? Oy.
Not anymore!
