Mays was sort of the anti-Ruth, always unhappy, always complaining. Had a really tough upbringing. A jackleg preacher for a father who left the family, I think. Carl Mays supposedly developed his pitching arm by actually killing squirrels with rocks, to get food for the family supper table.

Oy.

He also used to complain that his killing of Ray Chapman kept him out of the HOF. Which might be the case. But still...

I guess that must be the old League Park in Cleveland, existing in one form or another from 1891-1946. Not exactly inspiring, but still beat "The Mistake by the Lake."

The decent start by Gary Sanchez with the Mets had me worried for a moment. Then, last night, he went 0-3 with a strikeout, and had a passed ball and a missed foul pop-up in the field.

Phew.

Is this the game thread, or has everyone gone to sleep early again?

Asking for a friend. I heard Gleyber Cano got a big hit?

Why was Cordero left in the game until he gave up four runs when he got only one out? What the hell?

JM said...

Eight runs in one inning? Wtf?

AboveAverage said...

JM - it is as it was and remains as it is and it can never be undone

More proof that the Yankees don't have a clue about analytics: Cortes got hammered the third time through the lineup. Kevin Cash et al. almost never allow a pitcher to get beyond the second time through. This is what's known as evidence-based decision-making vs. seat-of-the-pants stupidity. Sure, you can cite exceptions--but the overwhelming evidence points to getting your guy out of there after two times through. This kind of data was not available to previous generations of managers, but it is now. The smart ones pay attention and excel on one third the payroll of the Yankees.

Peraza is batting.343. with an OPS north of .900,
Florial is batting .318.
France is batting .375.
Chappy is back over .250 after starting the season 0-29.
Big LRP Krook has an ERA of 1.04.
