I Alone Can Fix It (Part Two)

 Make This Trade Edition

This AM El Duque brought up the legitimate fear that Cashman, perpetually in search of his white whale, could trade away The Martian and Spenser.

Interestingly enough “The Martian and Spenser” was an ill-conceived and short lived episodic on ABC starring Ray Walston and Robert Urich.

The premise was simple Spenser, based on the exceptional Robert Parker novels about a Boston based detective, was coerced into caring for his geriatric uncle (Ray Walston) who wore an old set of rabbit ear antennas on his head and believed he was a Martian. In a twist of fate the antenna’s, when properly adjusted helped “Uncle Martin” both bring in the Uncle Floyd Show on UHF and reveal the location of that weeks murderer.

But I digress. I really want to talk about sofas.

NO!

I want to talk about an interesting trade idea I've seen mentioned.

Fernando Tatis Jr.

The Padres are over budget and trying to get costs down ahead of a potential sale of the ball club.

In the 2025 season, Tatís Jr. hit .268 with 25 home runs and 71 RBIs. He won a Platinum Glove last year. Strong arm in outfield . Was an All-Star the last two years.

He is signed. Only twenty-seven and is four years into a 14-year, $340 million contract. Twenty-five million a year. Cheap!

Only three million a year more than they just gave Grisham, and probably five to ten million dollars less per year than they will have to pay Bellinger (5) and Tucker (10) for better defense and similar to superior offensive production.

Plus, like Tucker, he's young so the Yankees would be getting peak Tatis Jr.

I really like this and would gladly give up the Martian + plus other assets to get this done. Tatis already is what we hope Jasson eventually becomes and, to be honest, might never achieve, especially on the defensive end.

There is one caveat.

Everything I’m reading says the Padres want to include a second large contract / salary dump to make this happen.  The name most often mentioned is Manny Machado.

Manny Machado

On the surface getting Machado after his peak and over paying for the declining years is so Cashman. The Yankees love to bring in expensive, once great, corner infielders.

Machado is already 33 and has nine, count em, NINE years to go on his 350 Million dollar contract. He gets 21 million dollars this year. A steal!!!! And then 40 million dollars a year the rest of the way. Yikes!

Last year he hit 27 HRS and batted .275. He’s still a good third baseman. He’s also kind of a dick.

The Padres desperately need to get out from under this contract.

Figure he’s more or less worth the money for the next three years and then drops off a cliff.

If we had a different kind of owner the short term potential for a championship using this batting order would be worth it.

Jazz 2B

Judge RF

Tatis LF

Machado 3B

Rice 1B

Stanton DH

Wells C

A NEW SHORTSTOP!!!!! ANY NEW SHORTSTOP!!!!

Grisham CF

That's a really good lineup!

Possible Solution:

While taking on the Machado contract helps lower the prospect cost it’s just too much money for the number of years left.

Perhaps the Yankees could do what they did with Stanton and have the Padres chip in ten million a year starting in year five to lower the overall cost.

It’s not a great solution but at least the Yankees wouldn’t have to massively overpay for yet another ageing DH, and Stanton is gone in two years or less, and they might get a ring for their trouble. Of course Judge is probably the future DH for those years... (Sigh)

Or...

I guess we could give up the farm for Tatis Jr. He’d be a great addition to the team and preferable to Bellinger or Tucker.  Brian could take the savings and put it towards Tatsuya Imai.

That would work.

The Yankees should see if The Martian and Spenser plus Schmidt and Warren and taking Tatis' contract off the Padres hands could get it done.

Perhaps if the Padres also threw in a love seat and a side table and perhaps a nice little faux 3-way Tiffany lamp THEN I'd do the deal.

I'd need to see the swatch book.

The fucking Genius, usually holds on to the Yankees' prospects until they devalue.

Oh, goodie. Another right fielder we can stick in left. I love Tatis' bat. And he's a better fielder than Tucker (another right fielder). Only Bellanger and Grisham have played CF or LF.

Machado? No. Please. No. Unless Cashman is looking for someone to divert my hatred away from him. Then Machado is perfect.

Whenever I consider the fate and potential of a Yankee prospect, I wonder how good they would be if anyone but the Yankees were developing them. Spencer, the Martian, Volpe all bear the marks of the Yankee trademark, one-dimensional player development. The K's are through the roof. Mental errors seem to come with the brand and they are forbidden to learn baseball fundamentals or situational thinking. Thinking is, apparently, reserved for the front office and their AI program. Not even Boone is allowed independent thought.

On the one hand, I would like to see these kids succeed. But that makes me want to trade them away, before the poisonous stench of Yankee development ruins them entirely. On the other, trading them for the likes of Machado would alienate me further from the Yankees.

I would buy season tickers to see Cashman and everyone around him fired.

Doctor T - I don't like Machado either and he would be a fortune. I was just looking at what I read and looking at ways to get Tatis Jr. who I would prefer to Jasson.

Also Tatis would probably be fine in left. He's a very good outfielder.

The Yankees don't need Tatis, at least not for the package you suggested. And you want to throw in Schmidt and Warren when the Padres are looking to dump salary? They could use Jones and The Martian in other trades. As someone else noted, baseball people think very highly of Jones. Certainly more than many here. The team needs to give Jones at least one year in center and Dominguez another as at least a platoon player. They would be better off signing Belli because of the longer contract length expected by Tucker and his versatility at first.

I hear you. Really happy to be discussing the relative merits of the idea. :)

Schmidt is still recovering and a was a #3 at best. Warren is expendable as well. Neither of them are making real money. Maybe keep Jones out of the package and find someone else.

I'd rather have an actual Gold Glove LF who hits for power and avg. than a guy who aspires to it. (Jasson) I'd like to sign Belli as well,

Tatis
Belli
Judge

Best OF in the majors! Offense and defense but you know that ain't happening because... Hal.

Bellinger is solid across the board - though he does post alternate down years - but will cost a a very large mint.

Tatis is also excellent, but he's never played anywhyere in the outfield, except right. Good fielder or not, there's a learning curve. Yes, he has SS experience, which might help. But he hasn't been at SS since 2021 and he was pretty awful there. Is he an upgrade over the Martian? Certainly. If that's the baseline, I'll go with the herd.

As for our prospects and recently ex-prospects, I still shake my head. In a normal world, the solutions are clear. Make the Martain run around LF all winter in Tampa, learning his routes. Send Volpe to boot camp led by Showalter and Girardi and don't let him come back until they both give a thumbs up. Spring for a shrink while you are at it.

As for Spencer, ask Judge to lend him his batting coach. HIS batting coach, not the idiots in player development. Teach him the magic art of situational hitting and how to shorten his stroke. If there's a pitch type he can't hit, find someone to throw nothing but that pitch at him until he figures it out.

Make everyone show up early to spring training for remedial education on baseball fundamentals, taught by anyone but Aaron Boone.

But, in the end, this team will never win a championship until everyone from coach to team president is fired and replaced by competent professionals.

We're just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Yes, these discussions make a dull off season go by a bit more quickly.

Between the two, I'd rather have Tucker. Before last year when he suffered from leg injuries, Tucker was considered a very good fielder (See below). Plus, his power will be enhanced at Yankees Stadium as a left-handed hitter.
Don't forget, Fernando could be called A-Rod, Jr. due to his 1 year PED suspension. PEDs tend to destroy the body by the early 30s. And signing Tucker only costs money and not talent. Of course, that's the Catch-22 with Hal as owner.
"Historically has been considered a strong defensive outfielder, but recent performance suggests a decline, with some sources now calling him average or below-average in the field. He has been described as a well-rounded player with speed, good arm, and few errors, but his range has suffered recently, though this could be impacted by injuries."

@ Doc...Jasson will be playing in the DR Winter League. That should help his development.

100% agree especially on boot camp and Judge lending Spencer his batting coach.
