"I grew up as a Yankee fan, being from the Bahamas, watching Derek Jeter and those guys every day. It was a great time being a Yankee. I loved my time as a Yankee."

So bursts another childhood fantasy.

I'm not referring to Jazz Chisholm, author of the above sad revelation, whose contractual qualifying offer yesterday was stuffed in a bottle and set out with the Japanese tide.

What died - and keeps succumbing, year upon year - is our collectively naive belief that to simply don the Pinstripes will transform a stat-sheet star into a great and hustling teammate.

Jazz is gone. As is another Yankee pipe dream.

Top Ten thoughts...

1. Over two straight winters, we've now cut ties to star second basemen with iconic first names - Gleyber and Jazz.

2. Upon their arrivals, both anticipated long and rewarding Yankee careers.

3. At the end, both were bluntly shown the door.

4. Gleyber went to Detroit in 2025 and became an all-star (16 HR, 74 RBIs, .256). Clearly, he had something to prove.

5. Wherever Jazz goes, he'll be bent upon showing up the Yankees. They have given him the wake-up wedgie that he needed.

6. Right now, the Yankee 2B position looks like Anthony Volpe or Jose Caballero.

7. One top free agent, 2B Brandon Lowe (35 HR, 96 RBI, .260) might be their guy. (He'll be 32.)

8.  Increasingly, there is talk about 3B Teruaki Sato, the 2026 Triple Crown winner in Japan.

9. To get Sato, the Yankees must do what they haven't done in recent years: Outbid the Dodgers, Mets and/or Phillies.

10. This looks to be the last balls-to-the-wall free agency period before the Dec. 1 lockout. The Yankees - fortified by all that Apollo Investment cash - need to make a huge splash.

But but BUT... Hal is still Hal. And whomever we sign, get ready to watch Jazz outperform them in another city. When dreams die, they piss people off.

I never liked Jazz, but it's possible that - for some of these people - the organization failed them. Our coaching, managing, training and mental health staffs all suck. Good thing for us we have a crack analytics department.

I never liked him, either, Bit. Always struck me as being an overgrown 10 year old. But maybe that's a disservice to 10 year olds.

Clearly, he was not contributing to a winning atmosphere. I’m totally unconcerned with what he might do elsewhere, just as I am with Torres.

My prediction is that Volpe will be the opening day 2nd baseman.

If there is an opening day…

10 year olds everywhere are truly pissed off at their misrepresentation. . . . .

Jazz was not a mature human being. Neither was Gleyber, ultimately (and overall, his stats have been even worse in Detroit than they were in the Bronx).

The ridiculous thing, though, was that Cashman got no one, not even magic beans, for either player.

So riddle me this Batman...

Teruaki Sato. Do we want another error machine at third base?

Teruaki Sato has been known for being quite volatile defensively at third base. While he can flash brilliant leather, throwing accuracy and consistency have occasionally troubled him.
His error counts over the last few seasons tell the story:
• 2026: 18 errors (or 19, depending on the scoring tracker) — After a sharp defensive season the year prior, his throwing accuracy issues and "yips" unfortunately resurfaced during his Triple Crown campaign.
• 2025: 6 errors — This was his Mitsui Golden Glove season. He worked extensively with infield coaches the prior winter, leading to elite defensive metrics and a massive reduction in mistakes.
• 2024: 24 errors — A career-worst mark that actually led to him being briefly demoted to the minor league (ni-gun) squad early in the season specifically to fix his defensive fundamentals.
• 2023: 20 errors — His first year transitioning into a full-time third baseman.
Despite the high error totals in three out of the last four years, MLB scouts tracking his current posting remain enamored with his raw arm strength and athletic ceiling, even if a future move to the outfield or first base is possible.

Still think we should get him. Some guys take a long time to learn their position, more than 3-4 years. We could go out and make a trade for a defensive 3B, but that ain't going to work either. You saw what Dumbass Cashman did with McMahon. Plus, the manager and coaching here suck, so anyone we get will suck defensively. Might as well get a guy who can hit.

But who are we kidding. They won't get Sato. They'll come up short with their offer.

Cashman does not trade away any one who is in their free agent year. Because it might look like he's throwing in the towel for that year. If there's a drop in attendance, HAL might blame him for the $1 mil shortfall in revenue. Office Boy is a survivor for a reason.

They would have to be blown out of the playoff picture at the trade deadline. Who's the last guy they traded away at the deadline? Chapman, Andrew Miller? That was 2016, I think.
