Last night featured all the symptoms of a drill gun suppository, the kind of Yankee loss that conjures memories of Bubba Crosby and Colter Bean, Vernon Wells and Pronk - a conga line of Cashmanic acquisitions from our not-so-distant past. And yet, we won. All is well. Aside from...
1. Greg Bird going 0-6 with three Ks and four men left on base. So much for the breakout. Tyler Austin's dad, fuming over the trade of his son, may be onto something.
2. A fourth inning that brought the bases loaded with one out, and one run in - a perfect chance to blow the game off its hinges. We couldn't muster a second run. Bah.
3. The game's final out being a ridiculously close play at second, an attempted Marlin steal that could have gone either way. It was nearly overturned on replay. If the preliminary call had been "safe," that would have done it.
In the end, we won... only to lose Aroldis Chapman to a barking knee - he took himself out in the 12th after facing one batter - while David Robertson is now reporting a tired shoulder. The bullpen is starting to look like Thunderdome: Two men enter, one man leaves.
Worst part here: We cannot tell whether the timing is serendipitous or straight outa Compton. You could argue that, if gonads are to be tweaked, this is the time - not a month from now. The Yankees are romping through a field of Hostess cupcakes - the Marlins, the O's, the Chisox, the Tigers - while Boston remains hungover from its World Series pre-victory celebrations.
If we believe the Yankees - (and on injuries, there is no reason to) - we should have Aaron Judge, Clint Frazier, Gary Sanchez, CC Sabathia and Didi Gregorious back and healthy by mid-September. Hopefully, that list would also include Chapman and, if it comes to being disabled, Robertson. Now is the time for our war horses to take a long drink of bottled oxygen and spend a week frolicking in the hot tub. And now is the time for the unheralded Yankees to step up and win a game against de facto Triple A opponents.
Lately, the waiver wire rumors have gotten spooky. The Nats yesterday dumped two quality players and seemed to be on the brink of trading Bryce Harper. Meanwhile, the Giants have apparently cut ties to Andrew McCutchen. Last night, the lone Yankee bench player to not see action was Shane Robinson - the last man sitting. The Yankees need a bat off the bench, and Luke Voit will only serve to piss off Austin Tyler's dad even more. Something is going to happen. And like everything else, it will be straight outa somewhere between serendipity and Compton.

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!
Gonad!
So endeth that JuJu.
Cashman is such a jerk. Clown. Asshat. Moron. Arrogant dickwad. Hollow-eyed toady. Incapable schmuck. Pissant "genius." Fuckhead. Asshole. Shit for brains incompetent imbecilic Peter principle incarnate.
Aside from that...
Don't hold back, John...tell us how you really feel...
This from the Post today and Pedro Matinez who, I hate to admit I have started to like more and more over the last few years.
"The Yankees don’t seem to have the energy of a winning team,” Martinez, now an analyst for TBS and MLB Network, tweeted.
“I understand some key players are injured, but they don’t seem to be hustling out there.”
I say, "Yes, THIS." He's right. There's a lack of crispness and urgency. How does it take 12 innings to beat the Marlins 2-1? Why does bases loaded no outs, to paraphrase Rudi G., not mean bases loaded no outs?
Doug K.
He's very right! Even the announcers last night seemed shocked—and pleased—to see Ma Boone actually seem excited at the end of that game.
Yep! Pedro is right.
Ahem: Were you Neil Walker, Higgy, Luke Voit, Gardy (on the way out), or that 33-year-old misery who plays RF occasionally -- why would you EVER get excited.
Higgy: Almost all of the baserunners who've gone on him have succeeded.
Walker: Making $4 million this year, which is short of the $17M he made last year.
Gardy: He knows how bad he looks.
33-year-old misery: He's got a mirror.
Voit: He can see he's not even better than Bird.
That's 5 guys who aren't going to Rally, no matter what TOE does.
Boone: I read today he's only making $1.15 million for this season. It might not be worth it to him to go thru all of this another 2-3 times.
NOW THIS IS NOT MY TAKE. I've always wondered about people who can be miserable when what they do for money is play a boy's game. I worked for a living for a lot of years (decades)......I was unhappy (with the boss) at times, but never as miserable as some of the pro baseball MFers.
Sorry to opine so broadly.
Hear, Hear, Joe FOB!
I remember reading once about how someone asked Earl Weaver how he took all the abuse from fans, writers, the front office, etc.
Weaver replied that he had spent years working construction jobs in between baseball gigs. At one of them, the foreman took a dislike to him, and used to try to throw sand in his face everyday. But he needed the work, so he kept coming back.
But about these particular guys...I don't think the problem with most of them is lack of effort. They just don't have enough talent, a fact that Coops simply refuses to acknowledge.
I suspect that Ma Boone thinks he's doing the right thing by keeping everything on an even keel. That's often the right strategy. It was usually the one Torre employed as well. But something, you got a get a little mad, even if it's pretend mad.
