Happy Birthday, Mick!

So this is Mick-Mass
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun

I saw on the news yesterday that they're going to try to turn the Mick's former home into a museum. They want you to buy a share of it for $7 a pop. Can you believe it? I think I'll pass.

I saw that, too, Hammer. Nice idea, I guess, but I'd like to think Hal would pick up the entire tab.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Oh, that's a good one! I kid, ladies and gentlemen.

He would roll his eyes and with his best Texas drawl, say: "What The Fuck Are The Yankees Doing?"

edb, Right-O! Except I think Mick was from Oklahoma, was he not? Seem to recall Bobby Murcer saying that both Mick and he were Ok-kies.

Putting this in the post was kind of a giveaway:

"Born today in 1931, Spavinaw, OK."

Mickmas Day! Remember this day and keep it holy!

Ah, anything that says glass like the Big Man in the Big House?

And so what if so much of what lay underneath was hollow? Seems to me that it's all pretty hollow today, without the splendor of the image.

HoraceClarke66 said...

And that should be "class." Thanks autocorrect. Thank you very much.

Meanwhile, should be an interesting project to make his old house into a museum. According to Jane Leavy's bio, much of the area is still a Superfund site.

Maybe the Steinbrenner's will want to clean that up hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Can you imagine how many home runs the Mick would have hit in these rinky-dink ballparks of the majors today?

Barry Bonds would be just another good guy.

Anybody know what year the picture is? Obviously before a World Series game; note the bunting and the fact that it will be a full house, bleachers already filling up. Judging from the architecture visible, maybe early 1960s?

It's my birthday too. One of the reasons Mickey was my favorite player as a kid

HoraceClarke66 said...

You are truly blessed, Mildred. Though it must have been disappointing as a kid, getting fewer birthday presents because it was Mickmas.

Not retelling of the young woman under the bleachers?

If anyone here is old enough to remember NoMaas, here is their post as the site came to an end written back in 2014

Many of the points still hold true today.

Honestly, it sounds like a prediction.

"We must also be honest and tell you that the Hal Steinbrenner Regime has significantly dampened our enthusiasm and passion for this storied club, making it harder to put our heart into the site. From turning Yankee Stadium into a Ritz-Carlton that caters to the wealthy like a Federal Reserve governor; putting revenues into his pocket as opposed to the team (Yankees spend much less per % of revenue than many other teams); propagandizing to the fanbase by saying his team is “championship-caliber” when it clearly isn’t; allowing the same decision-makers to plunge the team further into mediocrity (it’s a good ol’ boy network); and commercializing EVERYTHING.

Regarding Cashman,

However, his demeanor has changed over the last few seasons. Some of the philosophies he once advocated for have been minimized, particularly when it comes to youth development and sabermetric analysis. He has become a company man and an apologist for ownership’s atrocious baseball decisions. He has repeatedly refused to take advantage of the few tradable assets the team has had, hitting a nadir with the Robinson Cano fiasco. He has also failed to hold accountable the people who have turned out more busted prospects than a wholesale pimp."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I copy-pastad the above from Reddit today. Man that's depressing

HoraceClarke66 said...

And that was BEFORE the whole Dynasty What Never Was.

Cashman and HAL really are on the verge of making the Yankees into just one more sports team. It will be very hard to make it back.

DickAllen said...

Well, not only are the Asstros cheating little wankers, now they can lay claim to stupidity as well.

Deliberately plunking Garcia in the ninth down two runs? Absolute morons. And Dusty starts bitching when the Houston pitcher gets thrown out.

All this in a critical game five of a playoff series?

Dolts.

For now, here is the 23rd Psalm

HAL is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in the outfield: he leadeth
me to jog on the base paths

He restoreth my bank account: he leadeth me in the path of bad contracts for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of sabremetrics, I will
fear no evil, for though art with me; thy batboys and training staff comfort me.

Thou preparest a buffet table before me in the presence of the Gammonites; thou annointest my head with pine tar. My WAR numbers runneth over.

Surely good swings shall follow me all the days of my life: and I shall dwell in the house of Ruth forever.

Never understand why relievers try to throw balls past guys like Reggie, or Brett, or Altuve in big games. Walk 'em and move on, says me.

Houston seems to have all the luck in the world now. Pressley didn't have it in the 9th, but it didn't matter: one ball smoked...right to the shortstop, the next hit almost to the warning track. But he survived.

The Hammer of God said...

The guy Leclerc should've challenged was the guy in front of Altuve. Instead, he walks that guy to set up 1st & 2nd for Altuve. Leclerc had been walking a tightrope all series. His luck ran out there.

Now the Rangers are faced with having to do the same thing that the Washington Nats did in 2020. Win every game at Houston to win the series 4 games to 3. I don't think the Rangers have it in them, but we'll see.

The Hammer of God said...

And a new kind of cheating by the ASS-stros. Adding insult to injury, throwing at a guy on purpose in the 8th inning (the guy who hit the Rangers 3 run homer earlier). You can say Garcia should've kept his cool and just went to 1st base. But you can also say Texas has to score there. After the long delay, it was a given that Leclerc, who came in to get the last out of the top 8th, was going to be rusty. In a way, it was Gunslinger Chapman, fucking things up once again. Because Chapman could not get the final out of the 8th, and Leclerc had to come to the rescue. Something Leclerc has done multiple times this series.

Maybe the ASS-stros pitcher threw at Garcia specifically so he could provoke a bench clearing incident and get that long delay. That cooled off Leclerc on the bench. In fact, it could very well be that Dusty Baker told his pitcher to do it to try to cause a disruption. Hell, it worked big time, didn't it?

The Hammer of God said...

Think Ba-Boone here would be capable of something so deviously clever? I think not. And that's one of the reason why the ASS-stros own the Yankees in the playoffs.

The Hammer of God said...

Man, I wish I could see Ryan Pressly get his butt handed to him once, just once. He must get hit by someone. He's got an E.R.A. I've never seen him get bombed. I saw Dennis Ekersley get taken to the wood shed, along with even Mariano Rivera. But there are a few who I never saw get their medicine: Tom Henke, Troy Percival, and Ryan Pressly.

TheWinWarblist said...

Hammer, I like that: "Ba-Boone." Except it slanders baboons by comparing that idiot to them.
