That's right. That's what the Yankees' "Plan B" now seems to come down to."
Juan Soto? Corbin Burnes? Willy Adames? Nope. We're now down to Thairo—and word is, Colorado is also interested in him. Would you believe...three American Legion ball pitchers, one of whom can throw a curve?
Hey, I got nuthin' against Thairo, some years ago a gutsy Yankees prospect, who came back even after being shot in the thigh during a stick-up.
Noting his devotion to the game and his versatility, the Yanks...promptly sold him to San Francisco. Sold him—not even a magic bean or two—because, you know, HAL so desperately needs the extra cash.
Out by the bay, Thairo upped his game, becoming a glove man almost anywhere on the field, hitting 14 homers two years in a row. He was, in short, very much the kind of back-up we really could have used during the IKF years.
Of course, now that he's had a bad 2024, and at 28 is probably nearing the end of his useful stay in the majors...we want to bring him back. Can you say, "Brian Roberts"? Or "Javier Vazquez"? Or "Nick Johnson"? Or...
Oh, never mind. And this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO with all those pharaoh headdresses I still have moldering in a Bronx warehouse in anticipation of the "Thairo the Pharaoh" days I was sure would come. (And, of course, because a certain "Murray the Torch" proved to be more, "Murray the Wet Blanket." But never mind.)
It's called a "nemes." And the attachable goatee piece is extra. So here we are. Waiting the inevitable signing of Juan Soto with the Mets. He really is a "generational" player—he's now going to spark the generational shift of New York from the Yankees to the team in Flushing. We won't be around to see it switch back—if it ever does.
Hal & Pal take to the Cone of Silence to figure out the Yankees' next move.Never mind. There are so many other great sports options in this town. Are you ready for some football? (I hear there is some up in Buffalo...)

I do not care. Someone please shoot another CEO to take my mind off if this.
Someone was online saying how bad it is to think and write such things. He's right. Think of all that good have gone wrong.
The assassin might have had bad aim, and shot an innocent bystander.
Someone might have tried to interfere with the shooting, not knowing the circumstances, and gotten hurt.
Street shootings like this draw valuable police resources away from crime prevention. The NYPD apparently scoured all of Central Park, in order to turn up a backpack that was buried under leaves and rocks. Today, they are diving in a park lake, to try to find more evidence.
Of course, they do this whenever anyone is shot.
Dick Allen gets a place in the Hall of Fame along with Dave Parker. Both long overdue.
Soto deal worked out as I said: Yankees only going to the point where Hal knew the Mets would surpass. Now who will they replace his production with?
Son of a fucking bitch. Crap on a crucifix. Christ all shit.
Of course
One fewer year. $5 million more. He had no intention of signing with Yankees
Hate hate hate
Clarification: I don’t hate Soto. Yet. Just everyone else.
Steinbrenner is not just a worthless parasite. He’s Cabinet-level.
Hey Stang - would you stick that fork directly through my brain please. I’ll wait- thank you
Hal might have drawn a red line with the $760 million over 16 years. But I doubt it. More likely Mets got last chance. Why the Mets and not Yanks? Because Soto did not want to play for the Yankees. He wasnt giving Yanks the last chance. He didnt want to get stuck playing there. He thinks the management, the culture, stinks. And he's right.
So he took the Yanks best offer, went to the Mets and said top it. Mets did. Barely. Voila.
Absolutely correct
Why would anyone want to play for Boone and Cashman and Hal? Asking for a friend?
Well, the Mets signed Clay Holmes, so they may need to score 10-12 runs per game.
He's not dumb. But this blows.
So, what team are we following next year? And what do you bet that Gleyber goes there too?
we all saw this coming
The Brewers? Gleyber is going to join the incoming administration
kind of a "fuck you" to us, along with a repudiation of our entire organization. the mets WANT TO WIN. Hal does not. simple as that. Plus, Boone is a fool and Brian is a moron. it's not like the hookers in Queens are better. although...
With our eyes, even
Bitster - I have to respectfully disagree. To me Boon is a moron and Cashman is the fool
December 8, 2024, a date which will live in infamy...
indeed...dastardly attack...
Roofus is still doing shots - celebrating Pearl Harbor day. Better get another few bottles, Roofy
Assad to Moscow, Soto to Queens...
NICE
Verified.
I knew from the beginning that he was a one year deal for thr Yanks. More’s the pity we couldn’t win last season.
Move on. Fuck him and the horse he rode out on.
We may never truly know, but this is VERY possible.
It is, of course, impossible to know—yet—exactly how this went down. But I wonder if the Yankees ever intended to sign him. I don't think they did, which makes this entire bidding process an extended exercise in sadism. Hal can suck it.
You did call this out previously, Hoss. And you were correct
Better owner
Better GM
Better Manager
Better Stadium
and like you said better culture
Citi Field is a much more fun place to play and watch a game.
Hal is popping champagne again. This negotiation went exactly as intended. He came in second. High enough that he could say “look what we offered!!” without really offering it, because he figured he’d lose.
But look, the problem isn’t not signing Soto. The problem is that we were in a position where we really needed to sign him in the first place.
Please tell me, what is the plan for the Yankees, other than plug the dam with play-doh when the old, cracking bricks fall out? Is there a flow of young talent from a well-stocked farm system? A plan to build in a certain style of play and get players that fit the mold? A cohesive direction from the front office that gives anyone confidence?
No, it’s put Aaron Judge in the middle of the lineup and Gerrit Cole at the front of the rotation and Frankenstein a team around them. Hal trading for Soto, knowing he probably wouldn’t sign him, was his equivalent of swinging for the fences because he knew last year was THE year for this team.
Now, I fear this team is rudderless. Soto gone, DJ and Rizzo breaking down? We’ll just find another Trent Grisham or Alex Verdugo or whomever to plug the leak.
Aaron Judge and Juan Soto were both great this past season, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Yankees to a world title. They will not be better with Soto gone — but Soto wouldn’t have been enough to lift this team to the next level by himself, anyway.
This team needs direction beyond “well, we have Aaron Judge, Cashman can scrape together spare parts around him.”
The Yankees need the 2025 version of Gene Michael. Easier said than done.
If I was Soto I'd have signed with the Mets too.
Better owner
Better GM
Better Manager
Better Stadium
Better culture
Citi Field is a much more fun place to play and watch a game. An If I was ten years old and just getting interested in baseball I'd be a met fan.
The Yankees are in much deeper shit than they realize.
We knew all along
Soto wants to win it all
Hal just doesn't care
And yes, Doug - this is living proof that the world cannot ignore - the Yankees don't care about winning. George and Hal might both have the same asshole DNA, but George was a fan and wanted to win. Hal truly doesn't care. Everything follows from that - the endless employment of a terrible GM, the lack of testicular fire in pursuing great players, the retention of an awful manager. The E-Coli fries. I'm saying it's part of a grand, unified theory of anti-relativity. It ALL rolls downhill from Hal's putrid ass, in a logical stream of bad management and decisions. With no consequences. As Hoss always points out, with less scatalogical logic than I normally use - nepo babies do things differently. They are cheap with money they inherited, but did not make, they think they are better than the rest of us, they are out of touch with the normal rules of gravity. They fail upwards. The money keeps rolling in. Can we go back to the tax codes of the 1970s - just for professional team owners and maybe certain industries? Kind of like sin taxes on the poor shleps. I don't care anymore if it smacks of punishment, but tax the living shit out of Hal Steinbrenner. His daddy died in 2010, the year there were NO estate taxes, correct? I think I'm right here. I'm going to fall asleep thinking of this shit. Has he surpassed the Dolans and the Maras as the biggest asshole owner in New York sports? Is he some horrible karmic retribution visited upon us by something the team did 100 years ago. Fuck Hal and the polo pony he rode in on.
Oh well...I hope he turns into the next Cano and they find out he's really 32. Make it the newest worse contract ever in baseball history.
The worse part is that the Yanks will sign at least 3 consolation trash heap prizes and pay them more than they should of which they really shouldn't even touch on a team friendly discount.
We should take and get rid of everybody who sucks and rebuild the farm. We will never do that because it breaks the illusion and because it actually means that we would win in the long run and Hal doesn’t care about winning. Hal is a fucking asshole
Tank not take. I’m tired. Please excuse me. The Yankees have ground me into the sidewalk with the heel of their fucking boots
So clearly Soto was able to determine that:
Boone was a Moron, and
Cashman was an Idiot
Hal's happy because he saves a bunch of green and it remains business as usual.
We all knew this would happen.
Curious to see what E.D. has in the tank for us all tomorrow morning.
Thanks, AA. But I've rarely wished so much I was wrong.
