When Cal Raleigh wins the AL MVP, Aaron Judge will become baseball history's great enigma

Last week, as the garbage truck ambled down our street, I thought I heard one of the trash collectors make a snide remark about Charlie Kirk. Rest assured, I'm still working to get him fired.

Which brings me to last night: Whenever Aaron Judge approached the plate, a few YINOs - (Yankfans In Name Only) - failed to chant "M-V-P... M-V-P..." I trust they've been deported.

That's because the fix is in. You can feel it. Next month, Judge will finish 2nd in the American League MVP balloting, as Gammonites nationwide bestow that hallowed trophy upon Cal Raleigh of Seattle.

And, honestly, Raleigh is having a moment, perhaps the greatest-ever season for a catcher. He might even beat Judge's single-season HR record, of 62. We cannot begrudge his MVP street cred.

But when that happens, Judge will have produced the greatest season in history that failed to win the MVP. Statistically, he beats Raleigh in every category except HRs and RBIs. Judge will win the batting crown by 20 points. He will take the OPS by about 60. He leads in runs. He leads in walks. He has already set an all-time seasonal record for intentional walks. Had he not missed three weeks with a tweaked elbow, Judge would be on a course for 55-57 HRs - even more, if he had avoided a slump after returning from his injury.

Listen: I get it that Raleigh deserves some trophies. And like an opinionated garbage hauler, I should STFU.

But that's not how I roll.

Nope. It's still a free country. Sorta.

I say, when it comes to awards, wearing pinstripes is often - like appearing in a movie with Jerry Lewis - more a detriment than advantage. The Gammonites rationale goes like this: Yankee players get too much attention, so let's back whatever small market joboes who are in the mix. The Raleigh rally has begun, and come ESPN's red carpet Oscars wannabee ceremonies, Judge will be lucky to go home with the door prize flower arrangement. That's all. Is there a Mr. Congeniality award? He'll win that.

But but BUT... this October, a final judgment will play out.

Over the years, Judge has crashed into one consistent Waterloo: The postseason. Over 7 years and 15 October series, he is batting a disastrous .205. Worse, it happened in moment after moment, crisis after crisis, as Judge floundered in the middle of the Yankee lineup.

Last year, his botched fly - bouncing inexplicably off his glove in CF - opened the floodgates to a fiasco that still roils our guts.

If Judge can deliver this October, he will erase a scent that lingers from his past playoff ghostings. And nobody will care who won the MVP.

He needs to lead the Yankees and end the garbage.

Aaron and every Yankee can get in line for the MVP.

I’m going to impose new tariffs on baseballs and mitts. This will make baseball great again.

I’m going to indict Joe West and try him for bad judgement and crimes against the sport.

I’m going to summon every living ump and GM to DC for a special meeting. More will be revealed later, but they had better fall in line.

I’m appropriating any remaining assets of the Montreal Expos from wherever they now reside - and most are now in DC, I’m federalizing the team. They will no longer be subject to normal MLB rules, but all other teams will be. My friends will own some of the team, Abu Dhabi will own the rest.

And I’m signing an executive order against any fan who thinks the wrong thoughts about baseball and agitates against the game - this includes anyone on any blog who criticizes this great national pastime.

That sounds so cool…..

(Can we watch?)

As I’ve stated, I’ll take a WS title over an MVP award any day of the week. Having said that, I’d would vote for Judge if I could. But the tide of sentiment seems to be flowing in Raliegh’s direction.

What is a Joboe? If this is a typo, can we please give it a definition and coin it? Something to do with Joe Girardi perhaps? Joe Buck?

Amen, Duque! And let's not forget, Judge was already robbed of an earlier MVP by The Cheating Dwarf.

sounds like a great name for a novel....

The Cheating Dwarf

I'd like to see Judge win MVP, but it wouldn't be a ripoff if Raleigh wins. Hitting 60 or more home runs is no small feat, especially for a catcher. Additionally, he's the best defensive catcher in baseball. A winning combo. And in today's analytic world, batting average no longer seems to matter.

In 2017, when Judge swatted 50+ HRs, they didn't give him the MVP because his batting average wasn't high enough.

This year, Judge leads *all of baseball* in batting average at .330 to go along with 50+ HRs. And voters will still find a way to pass him over.

Judge's AL ranks as of this morning:

.330 BA (1st)
.457 OBP (1st)
.683 SLG (1st)
1.140 OPS (1st)
214 OPS+ (1st)
9.8 fWAR (1st)
9.2 bWAR (1st)
5.26 WPA (1st)

I don't see how that man isn't MVP, but I'm not gonna get that worked up. Judge already has 2 MVPs.

I agree: the only thing that matters for Judge is what he does in October. He's had a few good series (2017 ALCS, 2018 ALDS, 2019 ALDS) but it's been a while. He seems to be getting worse in the postseason. Which bodes very poorly.

His issues seem entirely psychological to me. He abandons his entire approach to hitting when the calendar flips.

I'm pessimistic, but maybe he'll surprise me.

A Jobo (plural is Joboes) is a magical being that can be anything you want it to be.

mr. bit,

Could you get friends from Dubai instead of friends from Abu Dhabi?

Asking for a friend.

...and it has nothing to do with availability of alcohol in those two places.

Zachary, you nailed it. "His issues seem entirely psychological." And that's what terrifies me.

AA, can we make die a painful death at the end of novel (a la Naked Gun), whilst the Yankee hero walks off with Ingrid Bergman?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

It all points to coaching

Please note: I didn't not say a name of a great novel. But sure Rufus - DO IT !

And maybe....maybe.......by winning the MVP, Raleigh will finally have both the courage and confidence to get rid of this butt lifts once and for all.

What coaching?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Inverse coaching

AboveAverage said...

I've heard about that.

Maybe Boone isn't the manager we need but the manager we deserve.

(plus inverse coaching sounds kinda creepy)

Judge’s postseason failures should be obvious to all, and I do agree that it is mainly psychological, although facing better pitcher and the lack of an effective hitting coach are contributory factors. I sometimes wonder what the Yankee hitting coaches actually do, as we see the same poor approach by the same batters over and over. I suppose at some point hitters simply stop listening. To me the key is better coaching while they are in MiLB ball, still formative…

I thought you *liked* horror movies.

Wait a minute-- is THAT why you're a Yankees fan?

The Geek Writers will vote for Raleigh and tell us he plays a harder position.
