Grisham pulls a hamster, and the last pop fly - shoe, I mean, shoe - may have just dropped

Stop me if ya heard this:

Guy walks into a bar. Bartender says, "Wallit be?"

Guy says, "A catchable pop fly. Make it a double."

Badaboom. Shoulda stopped me. A Samuel F.B. Morse Punch Line: Telegraphed. And lately, every Yank fan in captivity has known what was coming.

Somewhere, somehow, a hamstring was about to bark.

Now, with a month left in regular 2026, Trent Grisham might be done.

While most of us were sleeping - (Alphonso, on the West Coast, was self-immolating like a drummer for Spinal Tap) - Grish left last night's game in the third, shortly after a pop fly dropped in front of him, scoring a run that would eventually kill our night. (Yanks lost 3-2 in 10.)

Always liked Grish. The Snidely Whiplash mustache. The breakout 2025. The great circle routes in centerfield. Suzyn's radio hubby, Dave Sims, called him "Mr. Cool." (It didn't stick.) This season, the tread on his tires could not pass a state of Alabama motor vehicle inspection, if such a thing existed. All year, he's been a slow-motion replay, unfolding in real time. Lately, he's been in a 4-for-44 tailspin, a super el nino of doom, with a season BA of .218. Last night's hamster twang probably sealed his Yankee fate.

If ever there was a reason to stick Spencer Jones in CF and throw away the key...  that time has come.

Not even Aaron Boone can look away.

Frankly, the Yankees may have nobody capable of providing quality defense in CF. Cody Bellinger might apply, but that would require yanking him out of LF, (where his recent throw home won a game against Boston.) Rob from Peter, pay Paul.

Jones is a natural corner outfielder who gets slow reads on flies, and nobody wants to even think of a doomsday collision with Aaron Judge. They have no pure CF on the roster. (Cashman recently signed Jarred Kelenic, 27, a former Mets first round pick, to play CF in Scranton. Last night, he played his sixth game for the Moosic Marvels - his third organization this year. He's 7 for 28 in Scranton. Just sayin.')

Depending on the medical scans, Grisham's Yankee era is probably over. That one-year contract he accepted last winter came to define our off-season plans. And all year, be it Jones or The Martian, attempts to find a replacement CF went nowhere. Now, there is no excuse, no reason to look elsewhere.

That guy in the bar. It's Jones or nothing. Make it a triple.

Yankees - meh. I'll never be done as a Yankee fan, but the management sucks balls. I had a chance to discuss this at great length, in person, last night with a few other Yankee fans. We were at a Brooklyn Cyclones game in Coney Island. Yes, they are a Mets affiliate, but the stadium is fun. you can go to Nathans, and guess what? You can get there on the subway. Can’t do that with the Yankees. Thanks Obama - I mean, Hal, you towering asshole. Why can’t WE have a local farm team? BECAUSE - REPEAT AFTER ME - IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY AND HAL IS A CHEAP ASSHOLE. THE RICHEST CHEAP ASSHOLE WE WILL EVER KNOW.

Couple of points.

1. The Nathan’s fried fish sandwich is most excellent, but it is a bowling ball-sized portion of grease that will wake you up in 3AM like a donkey standing on your stomach. Not pleasant. I hope I remember this lesson, although I said the same thing last year.

2. Minor league ball remains a lot of fun - the game itself, the cheap tickets that let you almost sit on the field, the corny mid-innings shit that they do for entertainment - Hunter Thompson’s “old, weird America” come to life. Jesus Christ, they even had Impossible Meat stuff to eat - right next to the Pat LaFrieda booth. Too bad I was already processing a tanker’s worth of cottonseed oil in my gut. I could not even manage ice cream. But the experience was a blast.

3. The Mets are truly cursed. The Cyclones are a fun team - and I know they are Single A, but they were cruising with a 5-1 lead over the Frederick Keys - from Frederick, Maryland and named after Francis Scott Key, when the wheels fell off. Pitching fell apart slowly and in a horrifying way. They had a Bartolo Colon kind of guy come in and scare the living shit out of everyone by walking the bases full. He somehow got out of it, but they trotted his ass out there the next inning and that was like inviting Satan into the house. That inning ended with them down 7 to 5. Final score was 9-5, but it was not that close. They got manhandled.

Still, it was fun. It was baseball. I don’t get that feeling anymore in the big league stadiums. How did we lose that along the way?

One guess, and it rhymes with “money.”

Glad blogger is out of the shitter. I was about to post dick picks on Instagram, it was getting so desperate.

Is the comments section now working? If you're reading this... YESSSSS. (I think, anyway.)

It is working.

Grisham should under no circumstances be the starting CF. The Yankees' personnel decisions are so breathtakingly bad, that the fan is put in the ghoulish position of having to celebrate, or at least not bemoan, injuries.

Sorry about your stomach, Bitty, but yes, "Maimonides Park"—as it is now, wonderfully named after Maimonides Hospital—is a fun experience.

Incidentally, it was built on the site of the old Steeplechase Park, the very first, real amusement park, created by George C. Tilyou, and the place where that crazy face (which probably became the inspiration for Alfred E. Newman's visage) began...

HoraceClarke66 said...

...The place was still making money in 1964, but Tilyou's racist daughter sold it because NYC was cracking down on her desire to ban Black people from the park.

The guy she sold it to? One Fred Christ Trump, the former Klan-member dad of you-know-who. Fred was afraid the city might try to preserve the beautiful, painted glass trellis that enclosed most of the park under the new landmark laws, so he invited a whole bunch of celebrities out, had bathing-suit-clad models hand them bricks and then, at the climax of the party, they hurled them through the glass enclosure.

The bulldozers moved in soon after. And Fred...never did build anything on the site. It remained a weedy, windswept lot until the Mets built their minor-league park.

I fucking hate e-blogger and google now. They're irritating the hell out of me. Already hated technology, but these things have made me into an Anti-Tech protester hippie junkie.

This new injury by Grisham MIGHT, JUST MIGHT prevent Cash-hole from giving him a new mega contract. After all, one prerequisite is that you have to be in one piece and ready to play. So this is perhaps a gift from the baseball gods. Then again, unless it's a career-ending type injury, I can still see Cash-hole giving Grisham a new seven year deal over the winter, if there is baseball next year.

Duque, I'll go on the record and confess my sins. I couldn't stand Grisham. If he was sitting on the bench, fine. But out there in centerfield? Ugh. I don't care what that nitwit Susan Waldman says, I think Grisham played a pretty crappy centerfield even when healthy. And his his hitting. Double UGH UGH! Congratulations, Cash-hole, you finally found a guy who lived up to the back of his baseball card. A .211 hitter. FUCKING .211!!! OBP .308. 18 HR. This is exactly what he was when he came here in the Soto deal from the Friars. Kind of fitting that he got hurt again (hopefully for the last time as a Yankee) against the Friars!

I was thinking last night, a lot of Yankee fans considered Bernie Williams to be a sub-par centerfielder. Well, all these bozos trying to play centerfield today are making Bernie's defense look indistinguishable from Joe DiMaggio. Don't you long for the days when Bernie turned on the "afterburners" and ran down long drives in the power alleys? I always though Bernie was not that good on short pop flies, that he usually got a late jump on those. But conversely, he did run down long drives with the best of 'em. Great closing speed. He was very under-rated as a defender by Yankee fans. The Yankee centerfield situation since he retired shows you why. We really haven't had anyone who held down the position for more than a few years.

The Hammer of God said...

I can still hear John Sterling sayin' that we're never going to have another Bernie Williams in centerfield. That Bernie will be sorely missed when he retires. Ain't that the truth, eh?

The Hammer of God said...

When Bernie got those glove gloves, I was in agreement with many Yankee fans that he got lucky. In retrospect, however, I think he deserved them. Amazing what enduring two decades of average to crappy centerfield defense can do to your opinion.

Regarding Grisholm, .235 is not a breakout season. He is not that good a player and certainly not worth 22.5 million.

There's a psychological aspect to my dislike of Grisham. He is symbolic, emblematic of everything to dislike about the current Yankee regime: Bringing in someone else's garbage, someone else's loser, because you think he's better than your own garbage, your own loser. Paying him a ridiculous amount of money to play like crap. Playing him first and foremost because those making ridiculous money MUST ABSOLUTELY play until they drop (and can't get up). Insisting that said player is the best option. The absolute refusal to develop any player in your own farm system. The insistence on momentary, fleeting sub-mediocrity over intelligent long term development and planning.

Just saw an article the other day about how MIchael Kay, the Yankee spokes-blabber-mouth, was sayin' that the only possible option is send Spencer Jones down to the minors when Aaron Judge comes back. What can you do, except laugh?

The Hammer of God said...

Hopefully, this Grisham injury keeps Spencer Jones on the roster and in CF when Judge comes back.

13 B....next time check what is on the bun. Perhaps they use fried Silverfish.

I used to take my twins to see the New Haven Ravens when they were teenagers. They were the Rockies, Cards, M's , and Blue Jays AA affiliates during their 10 seasons, but none of that mattered to us Yankees fans. What a great time! Cheap eats, and after every half-inning there were silly contests and fun activities. The tickets were reasonably price, so a family could see professional baseball and still afford dinner the following day. For many years, it was a pleasure to see future Yankees play on the Norwich Navigators, Steinbrenner built a stadium that was several cuts above the usual minor league park. Currently, the Hartford Yard Goats (for those that don't know, a yard goat is an older locomotive that moves trains from track-to-track in a railway yard) ia a very popular venue for families to watch pro baseball games.

I think Trent looks more like Lionel Ritchie. Too bad Joey Gallo didn't resemble Grisham, as we could have called him Lionel Twitchie.

Horace, Tilyou then built Palace Amusements in Asbury Park and has long been synonymous with "Tillie", a grinning adult male with a broad and toothy smile. He was named for George C. Growing up there and a neighboring town, it was a rite of passage to frequent the spot, especially the musty smelling Fun House, It;s a damn shame they tore it down in the late 80s.

Hammer...That's the ironic and unfathomable part of all this. Grisham isn't better than several minor-league outfield alternatives the team has had since Trent's arrival. I guess my assessment is debatable, but he's clearly not worth $22.05 million more than Jones or The Martian.

Carl J. Weitz said...

Hopefully, Grisham is put on season-ending IL , and that call won't have to be made. Of course, Kay couldn't figure that out.

The Hammer of God said...

"fried Silverfish"

Carl, that's really gross!

Grisham is well past his sell-by date, and Helium is a waste of space. Jones over him any day of the week.

The Hammer of God said...

It really is starting to look like the Helium trade was another effing disaster. What the hell was the point? JD was hitting lefty pitching this year, had made a huge improvement with his right handed hitting. San Fran made a smart move to dump Helium on us.

The Hammer of God said...

I think that, chances are, our joy at the Grisham injury is going to be short-lived. It's looking like his injury ain't that serious. He'll probably be back a week before the end of the season. Boone will put him right back into center field and leading off.

The Hammer of God said...

And yes, that meaneth that, if there is baseball next year, you are going to see Cashman ink Grisham to a 7 year contract.
