Brian Cashman will tell you that he was not involved with most of the Yankee drafts conducted during the past decade.
He will tell you that his responsibilities were limited to the major league club and the minor leagues.
He will say that the draft was the responsibility of others in the Yankee universe.
But the report card is in.
The Yankees rank 24th in effectiveness of drafting talent over the last ten years. Ten years. Ten years. Ten ( 10 ) years.
Our draft " steal" of the decade was Jeff Karstens who now pitches for the Pirates, while we have from the Karstens trade: Xavier Nady on the DL ( has no ability to throw beyond 70 feet of soft-tossing, and will be a free agent next year. Think; Carl Pavano and imagine Xavier hitting .300 for Cleveland next season ) and Damaso Marte ( who has been worse than useless and is also sun-bathing on the DL).
By way of contrast, for example, the Phillies " steal " of the decade was Ryan Howard. Let's see; Ryan Howard, vs. Jeff Karstens....hmmmm. How do we find these gemstones?
We do have remarkable skills mis-judging talent.
I say we are 100% incompetent in judging potential talent, and we shouldn't even bother with a drafting plan.
Just throw a friggin' dart at a list. We'll do better than ever.
Boston, by the way, ranks number two in drafting effectiveness.
And while that usually evokes an image of something distasteful, rotten and smelly, it is the reason they are excelling with young additions to their team, and we are spending billions on other team success stories.
We simply fail beyond reason at this task.
Maybe Brian needs another line of work. We would do better if he sold sliders and onion rings to rednecks in Nashville.
You just know that tonight ( post draft), the Yankees will have spent billions more than any other team and have 6 guys in Birmingham , lined up for surgery.
Just throw a friggin dart !!!
Andy ( the Giant ) Brackman will soon be 30.
