Know your Yankee farm system Scrap Heap Hail Marys

The other night, as the Yankees were embarrassing me for watching, I piddled through our farm system in search of overlooked gems, much in the way that amateur astronomers find earth-threatening asteroids. I noticed several new names, each a former top prospect, now one stop from the glue factory.

Cashman has been quietly hoardiing former top draft picks. Is this a form of weapons convergence, like Blofeld buying diamonds to build an outer space death ray, or smart baseball?

Check this out.

Cody Johnson, 23, was the Braves first-round pick in 2006. Last November, we acquired him for a bucket of fried chicken. He's a moose, hits for power, but no average, was originally a five-tool guy. Now he's listed as a DH at Trenton. Good luck to any full-time DH in the Yankee farm system. But, hey, you never know?

Jason Place, 23, was the Redsock first-rounder in 2006. Another bruiser, he'll look good coming off the bus. He had a huge first few years, then tanked. He's now listed as a DH at our Single A Tampa club, which wins one game per week. Not exactly lighting it up. But, hey, you never know.

Last week, we picked up Jess Todd, 25, former Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year, a 2nd round pick in 2007. He's a RH pitcher, and we dropped Kevin Russo to open space for him. Hey, you never know. Right?
