Mariano Rivera is arguably the best closer ever, but nothing in sports is clear-cut. The save itself is a bit controversial. A pitcher can earn one if he enters the game with a 3 run lead and gets at least one out. He doesn't even have to pitch. He could pick off a base-runner and still earn the save. And the stat didn't even exist until 1960. Old time pitchers scoff at the current guys. Goose Gossage, for example, would come into the game in the 7th or 8th with the bases loaded and pitch two or 3 innings. Rivera normally starts the 9th with nobody on base. One thing in sports to me that is clear cut is that Berman is an a-hole. Just as before he'd rather "stir the controversial drink" to get attention rather than give the man his due.
Then again there are those, like Verducci, who take the time to reflect on the accomplishments of the man.
