I keep forgetting Catfish is sigh. Still this list is doing way better than my 1980s wrestler heroes. Half of them are sigh at a young age.

Was just chatting with ALL-CAPS about the first trade of Gamble, and it made me think of another dodged bullet, a-way back when.

After they signed Don Gullett, the Yanks were most set on getting Bobby Grich in that first, full-out free-agent year of 1977.

Grich had played 2B during most of his time in the majors, and the Yanks had Randolph, but they figured they could put him back at SS, where he played only a little after the minors.

It really speaks to how differently people looked at the game then. The Yanks needed a big bopper, and Grich had never hit more than 19 HR in a season, and would have been a righty in Yankee Stadium II.

Fortunately, Grich turned them down. So did Joe Rudi, who was their second choice.

As it happened, Grich got hurt in 1977, and never regained anything like the mobility he had in the field, though he remained a pretty fair hitter. Rudi also got hurt, and went into a steep decline.

And Reggie? Who Billy Martin adamantly did NOT want to sign?

He likely would have signed with the Dodgers. He'd always hit well in Dodger Stadium, and he'd have been a key lefty in the middle of an order of power-hitting righties. That would've been a killer lineup.

The Yankees would have played 1977-78 with, most likely, Gamble platooning in the OF, with Rivers, Piniella, White, and a couple others. We would've had Chicken Stanley back out there at short, and maybe a part-time Grich DHing a lot.

I don't think that would've got us past the Red Sox.

But hey, we could then have watched Reggie hit ball after all out of Dodger Stadium against them in the Series.
