Since April - our best start in this generation - we've awaited (and dreaded) this moment, the world series, wondering how we'd do when everything mattered. Now, here we are, wondering if we'd have been better off not getting here, not embarrassing ourselves on a national stage.
Monday night, Aaron Judge will hear chants of "MVP! MVP!" as the throngs seek to re-set his tilting statue. But if he keeps lunging at pitches - and he might - the cheers will lessen, settle into a din, and then, at the torturous end, maybe bring scattered boos that Juan Soto will surely notice.
We've seen it happen. We've seen postseasons so horrific, so poisonous, that they not only cost us the current October, but they roll over into next year, and further.
When we see Judge trudge back to the dugout, we see the ghosts of A-Rod, Grandyman and Swish. When we see Clay Holmes walk the leadoff batter, we see Aroldis, Flash Gordon and Tanyon Sturtze. We see Octobers so dreadful that they will accompany us to our graves. We see a haunted past, which turned on us in 2004, and which remains un-exorcized.
Those are the stakes, my friends. If we lose two more games, not only will 2024 be a disappointment, but it could set up a future crossroads for Yankee decline. We can cheer Giancarlo Stanton's revival, but how does a legless, 35-year-old fulltime DH fit into 2025? That's another matter. Two more losses, and a massive roster upheaval will begin with a sour taste on our tongues.
But but BUT... (as stated above)... This. Aint. Ova. No, it isn't. We can still win this thing.
How can I say this? Why am I shilling for Cashman and Boone? Did they get to me? Have they kidnapped a loved one? Am I on some exotic drug, or am I wearing a shock collar? No. Hear me out. This. Aint. Ova. Why?
1. Judge will hit. Eventually. We all know this. If we win Monday, it means an extra game for him to snap out. It's a six-day, long-distance game of chicken. We need to stretch out time, make every minute last 63 seconds. And we can do this. Grinding out time is one of this team's greatest skills. All we need to do is slooww... thinnnnnnngs... dowwwwwwwwwwn...
2. Somehow, last night, our bullpen held. Donno how, but it did. I think we're done with Carlos Rodon, who should have never thrown another pitch after the score became 3-1. If Rodon pitches again, it's on an inning-by-inning, batter-by-batter basis. That said, I like Clarke Schmidt. And maybe I'm nuts, but I believe Marcus Stroman, maybe even Nasty Nestor, will return for redemption.
3. Then there is Ohtani. Who knows how this affects this? Great teams often rally when a star goes down. Not only that, but Ohtani wasn't exactly killing us. I love how we'd thrown him out at second. But if he's hurt, that's one less major stress point per every third inning. And if he's compromised, maybe he goes 0-for-10?
4. I like that we made it a game in the 9th, and that - in the end - they were clutching life preservers. Jose Trevino whacked that ball, he's just not Freddy Freeman, that's all. Long flies are what you get, when he whacks one. But we made them sweat.
4. The NYC haunted forest is here. We can run the table. The Dodgers think they saw the full madness of NYC last week. Nope. They aint seen nothing like what's to come. This is a Yankee crowd, in Yankee Stadium, with everything on the line. And like us, they've been thinking about this series since February. This sounds stupid, I know, but we've got 'em where we want 'em.

Those were both eminently winnable games. But yes, our own Mr. Bill has to hit. As to Juan Soto, I don't think he can imagine this applying to himself. I don't think he can imagine choking so badly, year after year in the postseason, that the hometown fans boo him. Which is exactly why we should sign him.
If this were anyone else, I'd say, "wait! somebody call the police. somebody has stolen El Duque's password and is posting some crazy shit." But Duque has more heart and faith than I do, so I know it's our fearless leader. I am going to crawl into my closet and kiss my sad ass goodbye, but I may peek in on Gameday once in a while during Game 3. When is Game 3, tomorrow? Did the LA plane land safely? Who's on first?
I have zero faith that Judge will hit in this series. He had a terrible approach in Game 1, which then morphed into getting caught "in between" in Game 2. He's now too far in front of the off speed pitches but behind on the fastball. His mechanics are competely fucked up. Paul O'Neill always said that's the worst place to be. You don't get out of that kind of slump quickly. Probably takes at least 3-4 weeks.
If I was a hitting coach, I'd tell him to look to hit the ball the other way every time. Keep your hands back, keep your front hip closed, barrel the ball up and hit it the other way. Try to hit liners and stop swinging for the fences. This gets your instincts re-set to automatically correct your mechanics. Gotta get the right feel back.
Using up the bullpen was a mistake. Once it was 4-1, they weren't coming back. THAT was the time to use Nestor Cortes. He should've mopped up the entire game and saved the bullpen. EFFING STOOPID BOONE!
Sorry Duque, it’s all over but the weeping. The Dodgers will cut through Schmidt like piss through snow. Who will save us? Volpe? Verdugo? Wells?
And there’s always the Dodgers not so secret weapon….boone.
Nobody is coming to rescue us.
Ohtani getting hurt doesn't change much. The "secret" is that he wasn't even their best hitter. That would be Freddie Freeman. Edman and Betts should've been the 1 & 2 hitters; Freeman #3; Ohtani #4. They won't miss a beat if Ohtani doesn't return the rest of the series. They have plenty other hitters who'll get the job done.
So the Artful dumbasses had a 50 home run hitter posing as a leadoff man and stealing bases. So he hits solo homers and runs the risk of hurting himself, popping a hamstring, breaking a finger, dislocating a shoulder.
That's precisely why I hated to see Judge hitting #2. Don't want him thinking of himself as a quasi-leadoff man. Don't like watching him hit 45 solo homers a year.
At least there wont be Ohtani ahead in 6 batters graphics...it's worse enough that there's the Dodgers play-by-play guy and the Yankee hater as the color analyst...and the drug advert every half inning to pay for us watching this train wreck...
Clarke Schmidt will get his butt handed to him in Game 3. The only way the Yankees win Game 3 is if they start crushing the ball. And what are the chances of that?
I've said it before: the way to beat the Yankees is to load the bases every inning with nobody out. Yankee hitters will beat themselves. The first guy will inevitably strike out, then the next guy hits into a double play. We've seen it all year. Why expect anything different now?
Artful Dodgers are apparently too stupid to know that the way to get Stanton out is to throw sliders 1 to 2 feet OUTSIDE off the plate. He'll get himself out. And if he takes his walk, the next guy will erase him on a double play.
Apparently Giancarlo Stanton is not stupid at all. He was smarter than all of us all along. He knows that taking his walk won't change anything and just lead to him hurting himself running the bases. No one behind him will hit worth a damn. Ergo he will simply swing for the fences on every pitch, come hell or high water. So I say, swing away Giancarlo. You and Soto are the only guys with a pulse right now. Maybe Chisholm too, but he seems to have lost his home run stroke.
That Last Chance Saloon at-bat, in my humble opinion, should've been given to The Martian. I knew Trevino wasn't going to get a hit. And even if he did hit a single, it wouldn't be enough. Needed a grand slam there. Martian territory. That there is a guy who can make adjustments and hit any pitcher, any time. He didn't have a good finish to the regular season, but you can chalk that up to trying too hard with time running out on the season and trying to learn a new position.
And if Boone was crazy enough to throw Nestor Cortes into the hot spot in Game 1, why not The Martian for all the marbles in Game 2? That's one of the things about Boone that drives me nuts. Extremely inconsistent, spur of the moment managing based solely on who knows what crazy stats.
And so what if Boone burns two players in one at bat. He did the same when he took out Gleyber Torres to pinch run The Martian in Game 1, then put in Oswaldo Cabrera to play 2B. Not sure what the hell that was about. Cabrera is probably just as fast a base runner as The Martian.
@ ranger_lp, Have you ever seen anything like that for a national baseball broadcast? The stupid indicator for how many batters away Ohtani is. Wow, just wow. It's been unwatchable.
Kudos to Anthony Rizzo for taking one for the team in that last inning. But we all knew it would be for naught in the end.
BTW here's a thought. Why not pinch hit for Volpe with The Martian in that bases loaded at bat? Would've been great to see. One at bat could've changed the series.
I'm a little late to the conversation, but I've been too distraught. Maybe someone can help me understand how it is that someone thought it was a good idea to bring a rehabbing pitcher to come in to face Freddy Freeman in the bottom of the 9th with a 1 run lead?
I like your way of thinking, Hammer—but who plays short, then? The Yanks are a field player short...because we have to have Marcus Stroman on the team.
And Hammer, whattaya mean it will take Judge 3-4 weeks to straighten out his mechanics? So what? He will have a good 6 months! Can't wait to see him pummeling that baseball again next April.
When it doesn't really matter. April is the cruelest month.
Hoss- is there anything one can take to relieve all this pain and all this misery? Asking for the neighbor’s Milkman…
@ Hoss, They would just have to keep Gleyber Torres and Rizzo in the game. Oswaldo Cabrera would play SS if The Martian pinch hit for Volpe. If they're a player short, they shouldn't be burning guys for pinch runners. Have to conserve in case they need a pinch HITTER for one of their slumbering hitters. And even if they burned everybody, that was an emergency situation. All hands on deck. They can figure out who plays SS after they take the lead. I couldn't understand why they burned two players in Game 1, pinch running for Gleyber with The Martian, then Cabrera plays 2B in the bottom of the inning. No comprendo.
@ Parson Tom, That move, according to Keefe in the City, is going to be the defining moment for Aaron Boone as Yankee manager, unless the Yankees come back to take this series. The ultimate in stupidity, brainless, mindless data managing. Boone said that he felt "convicted" to go with Nestor Cortes because he liked the match up better than with Tim Hill. Yeah, Boone is convicted all right. He's convicted himself of being the biggest fool in MLB history. That grand slam was an MLB record: no one had ever walked off a major league game before with a grand slam. Mostly because no manager in history had ever been so stupid as to bring in a pitcher who hadn't pitched in a month and a half to a bases loaded, bottom of the 10th inning situation like that.
Sports "journalism" has been dead for decades. And Los Angeles, what the fck was Ice Cube doing leading off the game? Did we slip into another universe?
