At Last, A Call For John

John Sterling has so many clever home-run calls to pluck from his quiver whenever the Yankees hit a dinger -- and the Yankees hit a lot of them, Suzyn -- and he even goes that extra mile, taking special care to craft them individually to fit each slugger in pinstripes.

You could say that, more than anyone (with the possible exception of hitting coach Kevin Long), John is a factor in each and every home run hit by a Yankee -- and a lot of those homers can fairly be described as "clutch."

That got me thinking: where's John's call? Who sings of John's power? Who celebrates John's consistency? Where is the attention for John Sterling?

So I sat down and wrote a little something.

Let's try it out, shall we? I'd like you to close your eyes and imagine that the Melkman just delivered, just three or four seconds ago, and John did his call, and it was stirring as usual, and now, in the silence that follows, every good Yankee fan along the Yankees Radio Network opens his or her mouth as wide as it will go and bellows at top of his or her lungs:

JOHN JACKS A CALL OVER THE WALL!
STERLING SILVER!
A LOWE'S BROADCAST BOOTH BLAST BY THE STRAW THAT STERLS THE DRINK!
AND THE YANKEES MAKE IT A TEN-NOTHING* BALLGAME!

*Or whatever the score is.
