Cashman's Quest For Younger, More Potent Bench Assets Never Ending

Brian Cashman won't be stopped this off-season, and we Yankee fans should be delighted.

It is true that we may not have much in terms of dependable starting pitchers (I count two, at the
moment), and it is true that our outfield offers little power and that our middle relievers are a huge unknown, but Brian is determined to give us a bench asset to worry everyone.

Yesterday, under the world's radar,
Our GM struck again.

The Yankees have signed Ronnie Belliard and Eric Chavez.

Ronnie, as the world knows, hit a staggering .216 last season for the Dodgers. Ronnie will only turn 36 this year. As for Eric, a baby at 33 going on 40, has won gold gloves and hit home runs during the steroid era. Unfortunately, injures, sciatica and poor eyesight have limited his playing time in recent years.

But Brian, in consert with the Yankee's new "personality rehab coaches," hopes to bring him back to full strength. Rumor has it, Eric is already less heavy than Bartolo Colon, although Bartolo still has a faster time to first base.

The Yankee bench strength already seems bursting at the seams.

They might even ink Jim Leyritz, who recently signed on with the Newark Bears as , what else, pitching coach.
