There is no such thing as a "slight" discomfort. And for Jazz Chisholm, a twitch on a pitch could not have come at a worse time.

Last night, perched on 3B after a belly-flop slide, Jazz Chisholm didn't protest being taken out. Everybody knew he was done for the night. As he disappeared into the bowels of the dugout, the question was whether he was checking out for the month of May.

Nothing's been said. Chisholm is in pooh-pooh mode. The Yankees call it a "right flank discomfort," which sounds like what the Conservative Party in Canada is facing. The Death Barge says Jazz has a "potential right oblique injury."

An undiagnosed right-cabbage patch wheedle.

A non-catalogued, flaring French seam carbunkle.

non-urgent, soft-tissue sidesaddle twitch distortion.

In his postgame monologue, Aaron Boone described Chisholm as being "in pretty good spirits." Yeah, I bet. "He just told me, 'I'm fine...' We'll see what we have, but we're not gonna do anything immediately."

So... now what?

First... public denial. Cooperstown Cashman's go-to move is to soft-talk the issue, thinking he'll sound less desperate in trade talks. They'll wait for The Scan. What Chisholm says doesn't matter. The Scan is what matters. If nothing shows up, he might miss the weekend. If there's a thingy...

Four weeks, minimum. Worst case, 10.

Last night, they replaced Jazz with the lingering disappointment, Oswald Peraza - who has all of five hits in 2025, batting .167. He's in his 4th season with the Mother Ship, a career BA of .217. It's hard to remember his 2022 month of September, when he hit .306 and seemed fated to take SS the following spring. You'd think he's 30. Actually, he's a month shy of 25.

Nobody is done at 24. It's just too soon. But this could be Peraza's last chance with the Yankees. Over those four years, he's gone from being the future Didi Gregorius to the next Tyler Wade. He's never hit. He's always hurt. This is it.

Or maybe it's DJ LeMahieu's final shot. Two days ago, DJ needed a cortisone shot for his hip. Bad omen. It pushes back his rehab assignment at the precise moment when he's most needed. The Yankees could use DJ's glove at 2B. It's no time for a career existential crisis, but that's what he's facing.

Or Jorbit Vivas. Yes, Jorbit Jose Vivas. The lone Scranton Railrider to be hitting over .300  - (he's at .322 with 2 HRs and 5 stolen bases, though thrown out four times.) Vivas - 5'9" tall - is also 24. Two weeks ago, "the Bit"was called up, only to ride the pines until getting sent back. He still has yet to experience an MLB at-bat. (He bats LH, so maybe a platoon with Oswald?)

Or let Chisholm try. This is dangerous. Yank fans have been hoping he'd snap out of an April slump. He seemed on the verge. This tweak could not have come at a worse time for Chisholm. It's his contract year. His long term future rides on putting up numbers. If he misses a month - or two - the pressure to perform will be heavier than ever. This is the stuff of lost seasons and truncated careers.

Last night, it looked so innocent - so momentary - a twitch on a pitch with an itch... life's a bitch. Eh?

He's turned out to be a showboat and not very good. Beh.

He turned into his alter ego, Jizz Chasm.

Gleyber and Chisholm may have fallen from different trees in the bonehead orchard but they're still both boneheads.

Both below average fielders though Gleber is belower average.

Jazz' strike out rate is 10% higher, walks 2% lower, career average is 21 points lower.

For better or for worse Torres stays on the field. Chisolm gets hurt every year.

Biggest plus for Torres is he slots into the leadoff spot in front of Judge allowing Rice/Wells/Goldschmidt/whoever to slide down.

I'm not stanning for Torres here but he fits the lineup better and he's a better hitter. I do like Chisolm's spirited attitude but at this point I think I prefer Torres' quiet ineptitude over the brash blockheadedness.

Why not move Volpe to second and bring up Lombard, Jr. to play short? How bad can that be?

I know Lombard is only at Hudson Valley, but if he can hit and field like everyone who sees him claims, give him a shot. He did well in spring training. He's got power, speed, a great batting eye, and a very high baseball IQ.
Talent knows no age restrictions. If he can't hold his own after a few weeks, send him back down. I'm sure he won't be traumatized for life.

they could give it to Peraza. It's not like Jazz hits anyway.

Jazz Chisholm is a star of the future and always will be. And yes, now he has suffered an injury to the ever-vulnerable oblique. This is the worst of the Yankees' many mystery injuries. I would not expect to see him back until July, at the earliest, and then we will be treated to many recurring problems with the ol' bleaky.

It's a long shot, but we can always hope that SOMEBODY—The General, Peraza, the Lombard, The Bit—has stepped forward and claimed the position.

Of course, Pal will probably give it back to Jazz no matter what they do. After all, Chizz is someone he traded for, and thus must be given extended chances to flop...

But really, this is addition by subtraction. As the estimable Doug K. notes, "It's not like Jazz hits anyway." He is currently leading the AL in strikeouts with 39 Ks, on pace for 211 this season, which would even exceed his career-long, 162-game-average of 182. Last year in the postseason, he struck out 14 times in just 61 plate appearances.

Not that Jazz ever plays 162 games. Even as a young man, he has missed a third of a season on average. It's easy to see why. He is not a savvy ballplayer, but someone who constantly throws his body and his bat about histrionically. The play on which he injured himself was typical, throwing himself into third when he was safe by a good 15 feet, in what had already turned into a laugher.

If we can't replace him, we're pathetic.

Yeah, I agree, no big loss the way he's been playing this year. Put him on the DL and bring up a kid. Please don't play one man short for a month. (Cashman loves to do that, probably to save a bit of dough for HAL.)

Jazzy is not very jazzy. Give anyone that position who can field well. If they hit, great. If they hit as badly as Jazz, we've gained defensively, at least.

Cody's home run will keep him in the lineup for weeks now. Grisham deserves better. The Martian deserves better. We deserve better.

But when you're a Yankees fan, you can be in first place and still see how badly the team is put together and how stupidly it's managed.

Boone is an idiot, but Cashman keeps him. So what does that make Cashman? Boone comes by his idiocy naturally, but Cashman is playing puppetmaster. That's dispicable.

The worst thing about Chisolm is that we traded the org’s best catcher, Agustin Ramirez, to get him. Since his call up to the bigs (small sample size!) he is batting .333 with an OPS of 1.194. He is far superior to Wells or the Uber driver.

we may have expected/hoped/dreamed that Jazz would be productive, but his disappointing 2025 is only a nickel shy of his career performance -- mediocre with a dash of splash. bring on the replacements!

and Horace is correct about the oblique strain, one of several black holes Yankees fall into for months before they are seen in the lineup again. seems to me we had an oblique epidemic a few years back, and three or four guys missed half the season.

Doug K. said...

I read recently that Agustin has trouble throwing out runners.

Don't know if it's true of not or whether or not he can improve but that might have been a reason.

But, really we should just stop trading with the Marlins :)

Obliques unite, and keep Jazzless off the field.

If Jazz could get a triple every at bat moving forward whilst playing injured, I say forget the IL and let him dh every game. Who cares if he’s hurt.

HoraceClarke66 said...

So in 5 games catching, Ramirez has thrown out...nobody, with 13 successful steal attempts. Who know, though, if Miami's pitchers are keeping guys on or what. He does have 3 homers in just 7 games batting.
