The playoffs bring one harsh revelation: This is what well-coached teams look like

Last night, watching Jake Bauers did it.

Bauers, you know, is Milwaukee's HR guy. This year, he led the team with 26. And last night, he finished a grueling 11-pitch at-bat - a Fox barker christened him "the Marathon Man" - that drained Dodger pitcher Blake Snell the way Tik-Tok does my iPhone4 - with a game-changing blast. It followed Bauer's game two heroics, when he coaxed 12-pitches out of Yoshi Yamamoto, before winning a walk that flattened the pitcher's spirit like a bootheel on a ladybug.

Long before he discovered Milwaukee, Yank fans may remember Bauers from the 2023 team. Over 272 at-bats, he hit 12 HRs - "Jake Bauers, the Man of the Hour!" cried John Sterling - though he hit a measly .202. It was the season of Bauers, Willie Calhoun, Billy McKinney and Franchy Cordero, the four boners of the apocalypse. "Jackie" Donaldson played 3B, next to SS Anthony Volpe, who hit 21 HRs and was hailed as the next Bobby Witt Jr. The Yankees that year finished fourth in the AL East.

I cannot say the Yankees should have - or could have - kept Bauers for the last three years. The ebbs and flows of baseball rosters would kill such a chance. But last night's 11-pitch duel was the stuff of Derek Jeter and/or Jorge Posada - or Jose Altuve and/or Freddie Freeman. (These days, it's dangerous for Yank fans to look back on October heroes. The list of failures far exceeds our successes.)

And when you watch the games still happening, you generally see well-coached teams playing with fundamentals that the Yankees have abandoned through 16 Octobers. Instead of winning a ring, they collapse into a chaos of excuses. And often, you find a former Yankee stepping out of our miserable past. David Robertson. Nathan Eovaldi. Aroldis Chapman. Mike Lowell. Now, Jake Bauers.

Nothing changes. Another hard, lost October. Is there nothing else to watch?

Hell, I fucking loved it! Brewers beating the L.A. Dodgers was BETTER THAN SEX!!! BETTER THAN CHOCOLATE!!! BETTER THAN WATCHING THE YANKEES WIN!!!

Hell, the only thing better than that is when I win in the ring!!!

Well said! So now that's two Dodger pitchers who've found their Krytonite, eh?

Man, I can't even tell ya'll how good that felt when Snell gave up that two run shot and the Brewers re-took the lead, 3-2. Then back to back jacks (and a belly to belly jacks) for a 4-2 Brew Crew lead. Holy Cow!!! Fucking amazing stuff!!!

Jorden Montgomery too!

Hey, don't forget Gary "Numbskull" Sanchez is on the Brew Crew too! Hope Gary gets a ring this year! Win one for us Hollow Men Yankee fans, Gary!

When the Brew Crew finish off the La La Land Dodgers, it's gonna be soooooooooooooo sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Up 3 games to none! Hope they get it done via sweep! What did I tell ya guys, huh? I said the fucking Dodgers are going down down down this year, did I not???!!!

Yes, in-deed-y, the Brew Crew are a well coached team. A very well coached team. An extremely well coached team. Soon to be a fabulously well coached National League Championship team!!!

I use "coaching" loosely. I also mean they've got a real good manager. If Aaron Boone managed that team, they wouldn't have made the playoffs, let alone be on the cusp of destroying the fucking Dodgers.

The Brew Crew are for real. Looks like they're on a mission from God. These guys are young, talented. They're not scared of losing. They just do their thing.

Was that in 2025 when the Yankees, in the first series of the year, completely destroyed Brewer pitching at Yankee Stadium? And everyone got nuts about the torpedo bats? Was that 2025? Well, in two years, the Brew Crew have grown up. Not little baseball babies any more. These young colts are in their prime and they're gonna show ya'll some must-see hardball!

HOG - this is one time when the phrase "mission from God" makes me happy. And yes to all you say above. FUCK L.A.

It's a beautiful thing, Hammer.

I mercifully don't remember much of anything from the season of 2023. Seems like ancient history even though it's just a few years.

Weird how that happens.

I think 2023 was when the Yankees missed the playoffs, finished 82-80, and Cashman still insisted they were "fucking elite." Or am I confusing him with Boone?

It all starts to run together...

Oh thank god.

(However me thinks that Cashman should actually be considered over Randy, especially after Boone was recently passed over as Press Secretary after failing his blonde Mar-a-Lago make over)

Omg.

Now do Boone for Hegseth! We're losing anyway. Might as well have someone better at spin.

So on X, Jeff Passen tweeted what I think is a revelation. It's why you can't compare baseball today to 30 years ago:

"The league-wide batting average this postseason is .212. The average fastball is 96.2 mph. Hitting is hard. In the postseason, it's Sisyphean."

2025. Yeah, they all start runnin' together after just a year or two. I don't remember anything from 2023. I remember they lost the World Series in 2024. I think they traded Nestor Cortes to the Brewers in the winter of 2024, along with Caleb Durbin. Right? Then they swept the Brewers in a three game series at Yankee Stadium in early 2025. All downhill from there, of course.
