To answer your question, I dunno.
But he's our newest cucumber, and by far the most mysterious.
Here's a task: Check the big prospect blogs and see if you can find one that predicted Freddy Guzman being called up in mid-September. Good luck.
Who is he? Beats me. We got him Aug. 31 -- the post-season deadline -- for a schlump to be named later. He was our "get."
In 2004, Freddy was the second hottest prospect in the Padres organization, according to Baseball America. That year, in the minors, he stole 90 bases. Ninety frickin' bases.
He missed a year due to TJ surgery, then piddled around with Detroit, Seattle, Boston and Baltimore. Over five minor league seasons, he has 324 stolen bases. Three hundred twenty-four frickin' stolen bases.
The line they're using to describe him is "Brett Gardner speed." For whatever it's worth, over four minor league seasons, Gardner has 153 stolen bases. (Yeah, I looked it up. Sometimes, we DO do research, Anonymous.)
I dunno. Ghost of Dave Roberts?
