Despite a rather middling, wild card season, the Yankees have absolutely dominated the tabloids. But what does it mean?

Today, the Yankees took three out of four of the NYC tabloid front and back pages. If you rode a subway into work, from spying the newspapers in people's hands, you might have thought there was nothing else happening in the world - only the Yankee game.

And they didn't even win.

Here's the NY Post, which gave its front and rear end to the Yankees.

Front:

Butt:

Meanwhile, the Daily News also gave us its backside:

For the record, here's what beat the Yankees on the Daily News front:

After eight months of monitoring the tab pages, counting them every day, here are my best takeaways...

a) In the tabs, bad news always trumps good news, and fear always beats hope.

b) The Post definitely skews towards the Yankees... the Daily News goes slightly to the Mets.

c) Both tabloids are constantly anointing one massive superstar... placing him on a pedestal with lavish praise... and then discarding him when he cannot sustain it.

d) This is an absolutely horrible era for New York sports. Any team that wins a championship would own the town.

You folks have been watching this unfold, as well. Conclusions?

c)

I conclude that the Yankees do not have very good leadership and are unlikely to win anything this year, calling into question said lack of leadership.

You can almost predict the covers the night before. Today's would have been Conforto hurting his shoulder and the Mets being cursed had the Yankee game not devolved into the Rumble in the Jungle (get it, because tigers live in the jungle). When Syndergaard hurt himself it was written in the stars the Mets would sweep both front and back the next day. When Harvey chose to sit on the dock listening to Foreigner's "I want to know what love is" rather than going to the game, you knew he was going to sweep both front and back. The Mets won the month of May because they had disaster after disaster and by the time May 10th rolled around they had a 20 cover lead.

Daily News leans more to the left than the Post, so anything negative about Trump is more likely to end up there than a disaster from either Mets or Yankees. Whereas the Post despises DeBlasio and won't hesitate to shirk the Yankees or Mets whenever he does something dumb.

As far as the back pages go the hierarchy of what gains covers goes as such.
1. Fights. Evidenced by today's covers and Bryce Harper sneaking onto a NY newspaper cover.
2. Injuries to notable players. Syndergaard racked up 8 covers in two days from this. But since not a whiff on Conforto today, fights tops it.
3. Matt Harvey being a headcase.
4. Bullpen woes. Chapo probably accounts for 20 covers alone. Tyler Clippard, Betances, and Chapo is probably around 50.
5. Crap starting pitching.
6. A good win. Blowout or a fun come from behind win it late type of game. Pretty sad this is number 6.
7. A bad pun on someone name who had a good night at the plate or on the mound.
8. (Keep in mind this list is for Baseball season) During an off day for both teams it's usually a cover about the Knicks being terrible
9. Odell Beckham Jr.
10. The Jets doing something stupid.

Win a championship? The pickin's are so slim the Yanks own this town NOW. Just a couple months of winning baseball were enough.

Everywhere I go, Yankees hats and gear. The only team that comes close are the Red Sox, worn by the usual suspects, recent MBA grads down here to work their first jobs, and other such vermin.

Listening to the Yankees game on the street yesterday, on my old-school walkman (how weird that a walkman would be old school), I heard what sounded like some strange reverb.

I was alarmed. Had Our Founder just magnified his voice a thousand-fold so that it was coming direct from Detroit, as has been foretold as a harbinger of The End Days?

No. Just another Yankees fan, walking by with the game on his box, the famed Tiffany "NY" on his head.

The Mets have already vanished down the memory hole. 'Wasn't there some team that used to play in Queens, or was it Staten Island? Didn't Sinatra sing a song about them? Whatever.'
